Racing in the rain!  I have competed in short distance running races in rain conditions from sprinkles to downpours and I have been ok with just shorts and a technical tee.  Of course we are talking triathlons here which have you out in the elements for a little while longer.

Depending on the outside temperature and wind speed where your race is you might want to find a long sleeve "mid-weight" top to wear with some tri shorts.   I like the tops that have a longer zipper in the front so I can open the shirt up if I start to get too warm.   I've never had a problem keeping my legs warm but always hated it when my upper body and arms got cold.

What to wear really depends on the conditions on race day though.  Someone else may be too warm or cold in the gear I wear.

Cashmason - 2007-02-09 8:28 PM Need advice about racing in the rain. Running in rain should not be too bad maybe a bit slippery. Not sure about keeping warm when it rains or I am wet. Swimming not a problem

1st things first, be careful on any downhill turns.  Ride closer to the center of the road vice the extreme right because of puddles and debris.  You should be able to reduce the amount of fluid on your bike too.

In regards to Transistions, you can use a towel to cover up your shoes and stuff.  It will keep them moderately dry.  I used a large bag to transition out of once.  Mostely everything was dry when I put it on and that is what counts.

Good luck!!

Thanks guys. Still not sure if I will do the race. My calf is tweaked for some reason.

I did buy Friel's Triathlete Training Bible so I should at least have a generic work out schedule to work with.

I like Friel's Training Bible.  I set up a full training schedule following his periodization instructions.  In the end I paid the cash to BT so I could get access to all of the training schedules here which I dont' regret.  Still I refer to the Training Bible for reference quite often.

Well the race didn't happen for me. It was raining at 4 am and she had a cold and if I went alone I was going to be a selfish b*st*rd.

Now if it been snow skiing she would have gone.

Oh well got a 5 mile run in today with her this afternoon.

Now to figure out some sort a training schedule.

My goal is only 4 1/2 hours of training this week. It may be a lot more if I am not hurting after skiing. Don't want to appear to be sand bagging this.

A) I am a cr*ppy swimmer so can't do much time there yet.
B) Plan to ski Friday. Not sure how beat my legs will be Sat and Sunday, so no planned training then, though if my legs are ok I may well do some training.

Not sure what kind of plan to put together. Thinking of 45 minute runs on Mon Tues Thurs.

!5 Minute swim Mon and Thurs

And 90 minute ride on Wed.

Next week should be able to do at least 2 more hours.

If anyone has any suggestions for training I am all ears. I just ran a marathon, longest ride is 57 miles but 100 meters in the pool is a challenge.

My planned training is 8 hours, 20 minutes. Let the games begin!!!!

Finally get to start some running after a layoff due to injury. It's not the full six weeks but feels fine. Crossing my fingers, I hope all goes well.

I don't want to step on Dan's toes here, but I am sure he would agree that if 100m in the pool is tough for you, then that is where you should concentrate your time.  The only way to get better is to swim, swim, swim.  If you can't get out the pool feeling fresh, you will struggle with the rest of the race, regardless of how good you are at the other 2 disciplines.

Dan, feel free to add anything to this... (my group is going through the same thing)

Good luck in the challenge!

I have a really cool spreadsheet that I got from another challenge.   (I know, I am a geek.)  I will post everyone's planned times and update it as often as I can.  I'll post it here and in my forum so that everyone will can keep track of their team's progress.

I'm still waiting for Satan...I mean my coach to send me my training plan. Let's say 11 hrs because I think this is a recovery week. Or rather I pray it's a recovery week.

After the incredible week you had last week Dan, if your coach increases your volume further then you really are being coached by Satan!

TriOK's right. You need to increase the amount of pool time. Even if it's several short sessions. If you have access to a Masters class, that is ideal. If not, then observe others and practice a lot. A couple of years ago, I couldn't go 50 meters w/o stopping. So it can be done...believe me.

By the way, nice run with the Obsessive Compulsive Tri Club. This is the first Tri Club I've seen that says it like it is.

2 hours on the bike today. 4 hous 8 minutes out of 4:30 hours of scheduled workouts done.

Probable skiing Friday. Did not include planned ski hours in the workout schedule.

So you have any suggestions for work out intensities? Like x minutes in heart rate zone two y minutes in another zone?

Our "hills" here are mostly freeway overpasses, so not much. 20 miles from here I can find some hills.

Thanks for any help.

Cash,

Intensity really depends on how you arrange your workouts and where you are in your schedule.  Like if you're in base, build or peak.  This will make a huge difference.  Have you chosen a plan at all or just winging it?  Generally speaking, you should have at least one day of high intensity (read: Tempo) each week.  right now, just get in the pool and get yardage...don't worry about intervals.  And on the bike, you can warm up, do some steady state and then back off and ramp back up.  It also helps to break up the monantity of riding solo.  Riding with a group helps the tempo part bacause they tend to slow up and accelerate a lot.

Just winging it for now. Don't even know where to find a plan without paying a coach.

I am taking the free minutes plan from this site and using IM for the run since I just did a marathon, the HIM for biking since I rode a 57 miler in December and the total noob plan for swimming.

Great Job Robyn on calculating the percent of work outs done.

This week I only planned through Thursday, as I am going skiing Friday for the first time in 5 years and not sure how sore I will be over the week end. Didn't want to commit to training if I could be too sore to work out those days. Should be ok by next week though.

If I feel ok Sunday may do a 20 miler to help a friend prepare for the LA marathon and that will add 5 hours to the plan. But thats only if my legs arent dead.

Cash,

I would use the plan in it's entirety.  They are designed to take you from one point to another.  Training for a stand alone marathon is much different that training for an Ironman.  I've used the free plans on the site with much success.

Dan, which plan should I use?

Seems like the sprint plan isn't enough running for me, while the half Iron or Full Iron have too much swimming for my abilities right now.
