Subject: RE: triOK's Group - FULL

schultzboy - 2007-02-17 1:30 PM thanks. i'll try to look that up. but i did find a good way to stretch that area today. i went to my first spinning class this morning (and it kicked my butt in a good way) and afterwards the instructor had us do some stretches. the one that did the trick is where you place your foot on something that makes it tilt upward. then you keep your leg straight and start leaning forward on it. this really stretches everything along the back of your leg and mine feel alot better after that. and since i'm new to the whole gym thing i have a few wierd questions. i am used to training outdoors and checking out the scenery as it goes by. but since i have started running on the treadmill indoors i feel awkward after i get off. by that i mean that i do fine when i am running and can stay on it without a problem but when i stop running i get a little dizzy. it is almost like being carsick in reverse because it happens when i stand still. almost like when i am running my brain goes into a mode that realizes i am running but not really moving if you know what i mean. you see all the same scenery and it doesn't get closer or farther away the whole time. but when i stop it's like i have to get it to realize that the world is standing still or something. it is just a really wierd feeling and i almost feel stupid for brining i up. has anyone else had this happen to them? the other thing was since today was my ffirst spin class i'm curious to see how many other people found them awkward to ride. i was fine when we were just sitting there spinning and building up the resistance but when he wanted us to get out of the saddle and pedal i found it really difficult. first i like to swing the bike back and forth when i stand on the pedals but obviously these bike can't. then you also have to instantly turn up the resistance when you stand because otherwise your legs are going to fast for standing. it was just really difficult to get into a groove. but i made it through and felt great afterwards. just wish it could have been better. and this must be a common thing because after the class the guy asked me if it felt wierd for the first time.

Stretching your calves is absolutely vital to staying injury-free.  That stretch is by far the best one I can recommend.  Do it, and do it often.

The treadmill thing is just something you will have to get used to.  I am a treadmill-junkie when its cold, and I still get that feeling when I get off.  You will get used to it...

I am a certified spin instructor... I have seen exactly what you describe in almost every new person that comes in to my class.  Just keep going-right now, you are using muscles that are used to getting that kind of workout.  After a few classes, you will find that it gets easier and easier.  Its awkard at first, but when your legs are better conditioned, it will be a whole different experience.  When you stand up, you need to have enough resisitance on the bike to keep your legs from going out of control -  and honestly, you should have resistance on all the time.  Your legs should never feel out of control.  You need to PEDAL and not just spin.  The fly wheels on those bikes are 30-40lbs a piece.  Its easy to start pedaling and let the momentum carry the wheel around.  Add resistance to your pedaling and that becomes harder to do.  If you are only using the momentum, you aren't getting a workout.  Its cheating.

If you were in my class, I'd be in your face yelling at you drill sergeant-style.  I may be little, but I have been known to scare people...

Don't worry...the groove will come.  You might find a lot of people on this site that don't like spin classes because "Its not biking."  And they are right.  But there are few things that you can do to get that kind of workout ...most of which will improve your biking ability immensely when you finally take your bike out for real.  IMHO, races are won on the bike.  There is a reason that I am usually one of the first women off the bike.

GO TO SPIN CLASS!!!  (But find a good, challenging, teacher.  Some of them preach the mind, body, soul thing.  Not me - I want someone screaming at me.  Find someone that works for you... even if they are the preachy type.  It will benefit immensely!)

My kids have their winter break from school this week, so it is going to be rough for me time wise. I will try for 5 hours, the majority of which I will have to do before Friday. Did we win last week???

Robyn, where are you located? I assume that you are somewhere in Oklahoma. As you probably already know, I'm in Stillwater at OSU. I'd love to take a spin class from you some time. Sounds like you do a heck of a job .

Beat my 4 hour goal last week, so this week I'm going up to 5 hours. I won't have the benefit of Saturday this time though.

Awesome job everyone!  Remember it's about pushing yourself and just getting out there.  Every hour you spend is an hour that makes you stronger.

Keep up the great work everyone and I know that we all will continue to kick some major butt.

I would suggest that this week Sunday be placed at the beginning of the week rather then at the end. This would make determining the totals a little bit easier considering that is how they are mapped out in the blog.

you can change that. go to your control panel, then click on "edit your training settings." you can change to monday at "weeks start on."

Robin,

You don't understand men. A woman who screams at you is called either a wife or mother.

We learn to tune out the screaming at an early age, but a sweaty woman in bike shorts screaming at us is just considered Hawt.

That said, I wish our spin instructors would train us for real world biking, rather than just an aerobic workout.

I forgot to declare my goal in hours this week.  I thought my last week's goal was doable, but it ended up being a crazy busy week, so I am rounding down to 5 hours this week, and nothing is going to stop me!

Most instructors cater to their class.  If its a class full of cyclists/triathletes, then they will teach accordingly.  Unfortunately, most classes are full of people that don't ride outside of class and are only there for a workout.  When that is the truth, it becomes hard to accomodate those that want a "real" cycling experience.

Either way, you are getting a workout that will benefit your ability to cross the finish line at your races.

Sorry. I'm replying late too. I hate a pain in my ear on Sunday and Monday that I thought was from swimming on Friday, so I went to the doctor yesterday and he said I was fine. So I'm going to shoot for 6 hours this week.

In case anyone missed it, here is a really good thread for tips for first timers. All the posts have good advice, especially the one that says to get to the beer line early!

Maybe y'all already knew this, but I just discovered there's a Race Nexus page on this site where you can view race reports that members have entered.  It was nice to read some reports for the tri I've entered.

Getting to the beer line early means finishing faster than many other competitors.

Which means you have to do more workouts more intelligently.

Guess that leaves me out......

Yep, and there is also a way to find out who else is from BT is going to do the same race.  I've been to a couple of races with some fellow BTers and its always a lot of fun.  I am looking forward to meeting a lot more BTers this year!

I've thought about getting one, but there are too many other pieces of tri related equipment that are higher priority for me right now.  Especially after my bike problem.  This is an expensive sport!
