I DID IT!! I finished the Timberman Sprint yesterday and it was AWESOME!! The lake was pretty choppy so I was worried at the beginning, but just jumped in and went!
Overall time was 2:20:53
Swim: 15:35
T1: 8:13 ( I sincerely appreciated the volunteer wetsuit strippers!!)
Bike: 1:20:17
T2: 2:55
Run: 33:55 (actually the fastest I have ever run! Imagine that! )

There is so many things I look forward to working on now to do it again next year with improved times!! My poor husband, I just keep talking about it over and over, it was challenging but so much fun at the same time.....

Jean how did you do at the big race....I wanted to stay to see it but we had to get home....donna

THAT IS AWESOME! Congrats Donna! i am so glad you had a great time!
What the heck were you doing in t1 for over 8 minutes? Ha ha! I shouldn't talk, 4 minutes is high, i wasn;t feelign that great.

I had fun and it is always a nice time up there. Keith Jordan always puts on a fantastic family oriented weekend.
Swim 39:26 T1 4:03 bike - 3:24:25 16.4mph avg

Swim - official time 39 minutes. I got out of the water in 38, but the timing mats are not on the beach they are right before transition. The swim was AWFUL. I couldn;t sight and I got blown off the pack by the waves. The Kayaks kept telling me to go around the buoys...which I want everyone to know, the only buoys that matter are the corners! Other than those you can swim inside the buoys! I was planning on a 35 minute swim..but with being by myself for so long that wasn't going to happen. The water was fairly calm, until I hit the last turn and then it was really rough. I felt like I had to work very hard for that last leg of the swim.

Bike - the first half was good. I hit the turnaround in 1:33 and I was pretty happy with that. I wanted to do a 3 hour bike split and was close to being on track for that. THen I started to get back pain, neck pain, saddle pain. I was worried about all of this since I took Tylenol before the swim start. Then the IT band and knee pain kicked in. The IT band went away after a few miles, but on the flat out and back I was pushing a lot to make up time I think that is what killed my knee.

My left knee started to hurt a lot and I was REALLY tired. I missed all my time goals, and with a new pain in my knee, probably from being tired and still trying to push on the bike...I decided to stop and not finish the race. So in T2 i turned in my timing chip. It wasn't easy to do. But i think it was the right decision.

WHat did everyone else do this weekend?

CONGRATS DONNA! - that is excellent!

Sorry to hear of the knee pain Jean...

I DNS'd at Pleasant Prairie - it was hoorble weather conditions and as I've not ridden in the rain before ... I thought it best for myself and other racers to not figure it out in competition. That said - I'm disappointed and am looking for another race in the next month that fits my schedule. - That and I saw someone did a 10k swim in Colorado... THAT looks interesting

Don't be offended...BUT my name is spelled J-E-A-N-N-E. Thanks. ;o)

Sorry to hear about the DNS. but if you are not comfortable riding in the rain, you made the right choice. I have raced in the rain, it pretty much s*cks. My friend won that race. If you read his blog, he didn;t want to race in the rain either! http://blakebecker.blogspot.com/
a 10K swim? ugh. you couldn't pay me to do that. Good for you Dave!

How is the leg feeling?

Jeanne -- total bummer on the knee.  Is this a new issue or one you have been dealing with?  I DNF a marathon last year after spraining my ankle on an icy bridge and hated it, but knew it was smart.  What is next on the race calendar?

Dave brings up a great point about biking in the rain. I have done only one rain ride and was super careful. I posted a question regarding that very topic in the forum and got some good suggestions.  What does the rest of the gang do to remain safe out there?

Sounds like we had some great successes racing this weekend. Way to go Donna!

Suzy

Riding is different than racing in the rain. I think its trickier. You have people deliberatley going fast in dangerous conditions....I have gotten better at riding in the rain and now I would race in it. But I DNS a race because of rain in my first season. That was after racing once in the rain and knowing i was out of my comfort zone.

I will ride in the rain, that is no big deal. I have the gear and clip on fenders (helps a lot).

Wear gloves that give you traction or gip in the wet. That was my biggest problem. My hands were slipping off the gears/brakes and I wasn't able to grab my water bottle.

Racing in the rain also brings up some issues about flats. Be sure you can change your tires! The water acts as a lubricant for shards of glass. Small stuff that normally you would roll over becomes a problem in the rain.

The knee is an ongoing issue. I had IT issues for the past 2 years and have held them at bay this season for the most part. I don't run as much as I should because I don;t want a flare up. i run like 2x a week. The knee gets funky if I push too much and put too much tension on it while biking. I should have put my 12-27 on the bike. I forgot how hilly this course is. AND what really got me is the out and back of like 30 miles was all flat so I was pushing a really big gear. Stoopid! I know better. But I still did it anyway.

I am supposed to do Chicago this weekend but might bail on it. My next big race is SOS on 9/9. here is a link...check it out http://www.ulster.net/~sosnyta/

Hi Dave and all:
I have been actually having to work at work so I haven't had much time to post.

Donna:
Way to go! You have inspired me. I entered a sprint for this Sun. http://www.doublextri.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id...

The new bike should arrive today I am going to do a 14 mi ride tonight to see how it goes. Hopefully fast. I will let you know.

Jeanne:
Sorry to hear of the knee trouble. That SOS thing sounds crazy fun though. I want to know all about how you plan to carry everything and swim.

I will let you all know about the bike tonight.

Funny, when I read the SOS description "Way Cool" did not even enter my mind, more like "totally insane!".  I think this would be an incredible thing to spectate, tons more jaw dropping than an IM.  Jeanne if you do this you must post pictures.

I must admit I am feeling a little like I am in a work-out rut. My last few runs have been the pits.  What do you guys do to get past these days/weeks?

I have been unmotivated as well. Also traveling a lot, so my schedule is totally interrupted. Its flooding here in Chicago Burbs....Dave are you taking on water?

The SOS race is beautiful! I ahve done it the past 2 years and been slow, but finished it. I think both years I was last in my age group, and about 6 or 7 people from the last slot. BUT I have always raced injured. This year should be better!

Usually I wear 2 pair of tri shorts or compression shorts and put my shoes in the outer pair when I swim. I wear wool socks (the smartwool adrenaline) and I swim with them on. Keeps the rocks off your skin. A lot of people use contraptions to keep their shoes dry, but it really never works. You just have to accept that you are going to be wet for 5-7 hours and be OK with that.
I have some pics I will post to my album when I get back home. All my photos are on an external hard drive.

I do something totally different and fun. I don't "train". Go for a hike, or go play golf. Just do something totally different to give your body and brain a vacation.

Nah, I'm in Northbrook and Lincolnshire. Just read on slowtwitch about the water situation in Lake Michigan...the Trib just had an artilce about the locks opening and dumping raw sewage in Wilmette. Kinda worried about this swim.

Hello Everyone!
Finished the sprint and feel pretty good about my performance. time 2:02. Which got me 203 out of 251 finishers. The new bike is good. I only had my 1st chance to ride it a little while on Sat. I had to get the peddle retapped and that was the only time I had but I avg 14.2mph today which is about 3 mph faster than the Roadmaster. I feel food about the future. Pictures soon and of course the retirement party. On the run I had to walk/jog the out but was able to jog the whole way back. 13:54 mile avg. Oh well. Swim felt good 11:45.

Thank you all for your support, I am so glad to be a part of this group!

I am actually shopping around for one now. i have done all this without a coach, but feel its going to be hard to eventually qualify for Hawaii without one. The big problem is everyone I am looking at is $200 - $250. (that is more than my car payment)

There are coaches out there who are less expensive. But I would caution you against useing a program that has a lot of athletes. Like CTS. One coach I know who worked for them had 40 atheletes! If you are going to go that route, use the progams here on BT or in Matt Fitzgeralds book and pay a coach for an hour of their time every month or so.
