I will be visiting Gatorade Institute to help with their research, and dehydration rate and caloric intake will be the focus. Cool ! Are you going to share info with us? |

They claim that you can actually get more calories by having a mixture of the two sugars, contradicting what Hammer says. I used Powerbar's sport drink last year with success. They also claim the mix of simple & complex carbs provides higher rate of absorption. Depending on the race duration and temps, I add in Carbopro to make it more caloric dense. billgeist - 2008-01-25 9:32 AM Anyone up to anything exciting this weekend? I attempted a bike threshold test last night and just couldn't get it done. I did a 1min and 5min power test instead, but what I really needed was the 20min test so I can create my zones. That'll be my exciting training event this weekend (I'm a bit nervous to see how far below it is from my peak fitness last summer). |

Although I feel good, you're probably right. Plus there's no hurry. I'll wait until perhaps next weekend. Thanks for the input. |

New user 14 | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps I picked up a gret book on Nutrition by Brendan Brazier called the Thrive Diet. It's vegan recipes, if you're into that sort of thing, but he has some great recipes for Sports drinks, gels, puddings etc. The recipes include things such as dates, lemons, limes, Agave nectar and the like. |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Speaking of recipes...here's my own personal smoothie recipe I made up on my own. I never measure ingredients (guessing on amounts below) so you'll have to play it by ear. Helps to have a powerful blender to really grind up the frozen fruit. Put 2 heaping tbsp of soy or whey protein in first Cut up one banana 3/4 cup frozen blueberries 3-5 large frozen strawberries 2-3 tbsp of fruit from can of Dole Tropical Fruit mix (pineapple, mango, etc), then pour some of the juice into the blender 3 heaping tbsp of lowfat yogurt (I use blueberry or strawberry) Then pour in orange juice to fill up air pockets in blender (guessing 1 cup?) Blend well to eliminate any chunks. I love this stuff after a long workout in the summer.

Veteran 114 NW suburbs of Chicago | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Great race, Jim. That's one fast half marathon time, especially for January. Seems like you travel quite a bit. How do you adjust training when you're away? I used to travel a lot, 2007 was light, but I have a feeling 2008 will be rough. Based on your suggestion, I didn't do my FTP bike test but did get in a good ride. It felt great and don't feel any residual fatigue from the marathon. I'm pleasantly suprised. This weekend, I started building my new TT bike and I'm psyched. I hope to finish it this week and will post pics soon. |

I hope to finish it this week and will post pics soon. Thanks. Frustrating to know that my PR is 10 minutes faster than I did in a recent race, but its only January. I really need to lose some weight. Yeah, travel is rough. I got a promotion last year to my dream job and my travel tripled and my email is tenfold. I'm on the road 5 out of the next 9 weeks. Altough I hate treadmills, I'm going to have to get used to using them because many of the places we meet at simply suck for running. I'm spoiled living out in the middle of nowhere. Getting to a pool is the big problem. The pool in the hotel in Denver is so small I think I might be able to get 2 full strokes in before I have to make a turn. The hard part is making sure I get a workout in early AM because its hard to predict how late meetings will run in the evening. Trying to eat right is another hurdle. I just need to make the best of it and be as efficient as I can. What frame are you building up for your TT bike? Take a look at my Felt DA in my albums....I wuv it Edited by Birkierunner 2008-01-28 9:46 PM |

The pool in the hotel in Denver is so small I think I might be able to get 2 full strokes in before I have to make a turn. I did some research a couple of years ago on creative ways to get in workouts while away. Here's what I remember reading on swimming: 1. If there's no pool, I like to perform dryland swim exercises with stretch cords. It allows me to focus on the catch phase, and final phase of the stroke working on getting power from tricep. The bonus is stretch cords pack easily and this workout can be done anywhere. 2. If there's a tiny pool, attach stretch cord from ladder to ankles and swim. I've attempted this once and it was a bit weird. If I get desparate, I'll try it again on my next biz trip. |

New user 4 | Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - Temporarily RE-OPENING to recruit additional peeps Hi Everyone I've been very quiet here, somewhat intimidated, but I am learning a lot from the group. As a beginner and training for my first olympic in 3 months, I never factored in getting sick! I've been trying to get in some training since last Thursday (when I realized I was coming down with something) but it hasn't been going so great. So,what is the best course of action? What do you do about missed training? Do you pick up where you left off or just jump back in? |
