#227

Longest training day of year so far (ever for me). 5 hours on trainer, then ran 5.5 miles around my cul-de-sac with my daughter on her bike. Jumped in an ice bath afterwards, was a bit short on the ice, it was all melted when I got out, but still good.

Guys - school me on your ice baths a little bit. I'll admit, I'm a total wimp when it comes to cold water, especially if I have to climb into it slowly (and yes, I realize the irony of living in Michigan!). I'm the guy who sits on the side of the pool for 5 minutes trying to get in. Never had a problem with this when I was a competitive swimmer because I could dive in, but I have a complete mental block when getting in slowly. Anyway, this to say that as much as the rejuvenating effect sounds incredible, I don't know if I could convince myself to climb in the tub like that.

Do you fill it with ice and water before getting in? I'm imagining hopping in a tub of lukewarm water and then dumping a few ice bags in with me to bring the temperature down. What's your procedure and how the heck do you gear yourself up to do it?

Or, feel free to call me out as the wuss that I am in response as well!

Fill the tub with cold water deep enough to cover your hips when you sit.

Add 20-30 lbs. of ice.

Put 1 or 2 beers on the floor next to the tub.

Step into tub and sit down.

Curse loudly.

Grab first beer and chug it.

Curse again.

Pick up second beer, sip it as you enjoy the numbness that has set in.

Wait 15 minutes.

Exit tub.

I must confess this description had me both laughing and shivering at the same time. I'll give it a try in the next day or two. My legs feel a little beat up going in to my race this Sunday morning.

I have a similar technique with a few differences:

2 bags of ice is usually enough (I forget how much they weigh).

A usually start filling the tub with cold water, sit down once it is high enough to mostly cover my legs, and then dump the ice on my legs and let the water rise up to my waist, then sit for 15 minutes.

Oh, I also wear whatever shorts I was in for the workout. I like some "protection."

I have to stifle the curses, because my kids are there as they think it is hilarious that I sit in a tub of ice, and they like to dump more ice/cold water on parts of my body that are not submerged (probably my least favorite part of the whole ordeal, but they seem to get such a kick out of it that I let them do it).

I usually do the beer later, I'm not so much the pain with pleasure type, I like pleasure with pleasure (kids asleep, I'm in my chair, with feet up).

You mentioned about your legs being beat up. Usually I only do it immediately after a long or very hard training session where my legs feel like chopped meat, not just randomly for recovery. After a really tough session, I actually welcome the ice to numb away the pain.

As for the streak, #228.

Ran 75 minutes at easy pace (had to cut a planned 2 hour run short due to thunder/rain coming in), didn't really keep track of distance.

9 easy miles on the bike just to get the legs moving, then 2 easy miles running. Will do another easy 2 tomorrow to take it easy before my own race on Sunday.

Hope you have a great race in Ann Arbor! Let us know how it goes!

Grand Rapids Triathlon...I'm doing the sprint. Depending on weather conditions, I'm hoping to drop 2-3 minutes off of last year's result.

And thank you, by the way!!! I'm interested to see how much my run improves from last year based on all this running I've done. Today was #63, by the way.

The streak came to an end today at my triathlon. I came out of the water as about the 3rd person in the 40+ wave, had the wetsuit strippers help me get out of my suit, and then when I was running to the transition area, felt like I got kicked in the back of the left leg. Sure enough, I couldn't put any weight on my left leg after that. Had to drop out of the race, went to a med center, where they determined I tore my calf muscle. The race doctor thought it might have been the Achilles, so I guess I was lucky there.

Seeing a sports doctor this week for a better diagnosis. I'm hoping that I'll be rejoining the streak later this summer.

I'll keep tabs in you guys!

14.2 mi. Lots of hill repeats. Have a 0.4 mile hill near close to my house. Started off the run with a few loops around my block, then pretty much went up and down the hill for the next 10 miles.
