I'm in.  Thanks for the info.  I hope I can keep up with the thread.  It seems I have been struggling to even get on and keep up with the reading for this group.

The benefit of multiple mentors...But with Jonathan being scarce and you succumbing to life...and me in my mental fog, that leaves Warren!  Although I'm doing much, much better this week.

I am very happy to hear you're doing much better.  Hopefully things are on a slow down for me and I will be able to get back into the swing of things on here.  I agree that having 4 of us to mentor everyone is making a huge difference.  I can't imagine what a time you must have had when you were the only mentor.

BTW, thanks for being involved with this group and providing the tremendous amount of insight you can give all of us!

I just remembered the funniest thing that happened during the race... So I am biking and actually going pretty fast for me, when what I see up ahead but a chipmunk I think he should make it across so I won't run him over until...... This guy passes me, the chipmunk freaks, stops, turns, goes one way then the other as I .........SCREAM , at this point the chipmunk has survived the guy on the bike turns around and all he could do was laugh yes we both got a good chuckle out of this.

Tracy those pictures are great. Shasta doesn't have those clouds at the peak today, just some puffy ones lower down. I can see Mt Shasta from my desk here in the office when I look out the north facing windows.

There is a "sprint" tri with Shasta as it's backdrop in September called the Tinman. It's a fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Dunsmuir. I'm planning on entering that one this year.

Those clouds were pretty awesome yesterday.  It's funny.  We were getting gas and I saw some "tourists" running with their cameras so I decided to look and see what they were so excited about.  It was an impressive lenticular display!  (Can't call myself a tourist since we have a house over there.  I'm also from a long line of native "State of Jefferson" folk. Wink)  You are lucky to have a nice view from your office window!

I've done the Tinman a few times.  Not sure about this year.  We'll see.

mambos - 2012-06-26 5:25 PM Did I miss the note about it being national perfume day? Started off at the pool when half way through my set a lady walked in and I could instantly taste her perfume! Each time i got back down to the end of the pool the perfume just overwhelmed me! Then tonight while running it seemed everyone I passed had some sort of strong perfume on! Towards the end of my run I was tired of the smells and felt my dinner rumbling, sooooooo, from there on I just crop dusted everyone! Preemptive strike! . I know juvenile but it was fun!

Hahahaha!!!!  Love it!!!!

Ha ha, I know just what you felt. I had a squirrel do that to me the other day when I was riding around the state park. He ran out into the road, I thought he would turn the other way but instead he ran right in front of me. I barely missed creaming the poor little guy but it sent butterflies into my stomach!

A quick update,

Visited with my parents yesterday and Dad looked really good besides the oxygen he has to haul around. His spirits were good though and he says he feels much better. He has one more week with the oxygen so hopefully he will continue to feel good after that is gone.

My Achilles is still causing me some lingering discomfort. I went for an ART session on Monday and the chiro found some really nasty knots in my calf. He worked those out and my upper calf feels much much better. Now I just have to calm the inflammation I guess. Chiro recommended using the stick or foam roller to continue working on any knots in my calf and I am planning another visit for Friday. I am icing it in a bucket of ice water, stretching, taking a NASID, and following the other suggestions of a short ride before I run and running slow and easy on the treadmill. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Now a race question, I am racing a sprint on Sunday. The run portion is on a trail. I love my trail shoes and would love to wear them during the race but I have never run in them without socks. I can try them out sockless on the treadmill but that is not going to cause the same kind of friction I will get making turns on a trail. What do you think? Bring the socks or risk the blisters?

JoAnne I got kick out of your story and I can relate I had the same sort of thing happen to me a while back. Like Dina I had a squirrel just dart out in front of me. I almost had a heart attack on the bike as he startled me so bad and I am not sure how I didn't hit him.

Just wanted to give a quick update on my "daughter".  The surgery went as well as the surgeon has hoped.  He was able to totally remove the whole thing, no blood vessel attachment, very clean surgery site.  They're gonna biopsy the mass to be sure, but it looks like just "inert body material", whatever that means.

Thanks for thinking of her.

Another middle schooler!  I knew you were a kindred spirit.  My hairline says I'm getting older but I still laugh at the same things I did when I was 12.

Warren that is great news and glad to hear it went very well. Hoping and praying for a speedy recovery for your "daughter" and that the results of the biopsy turn out to be nothing to worry about.

Dina, I have no other suggestions for your achilles.  I think you've got it covered.

For your sprint...you are honestly free to choose comfort over discomfort.  If you choose to wear socks that's entirely respectable.

But I will share with you my perspective on this...In a Sprint triathlon there isn't enough time to REALLY chew up my feet, so I go barefoot even knowing that I have some hot spots on my feet.  I only notice a little discomfort during the race and afterwards I will have wounds to nurse, but not quite to the point of bleeding.

However, a few years ago I did an Xterra in the rain on a sandy course.  I DID opt to wear socks which I put on in T1.  But the mtn biking was so wet and muddy that when I got to T2 my socks were caked with mud all the way down to the toes.  I quickly decided to pull them off to reveal clean feet for the running shoes.  I then got sand particles in the shoes through the run and they destroyed my feet.  I'll post a picture of the shoes draining the bathtub after the race AFTER I had spent 10 minutes rinsing out all the blood...(I thought).

Anyway, you seem fairly competitive.  My guess is that for a sprint race you would be fine with some discomfort and minor blistering.  If it's dry and you are able to get your feet wiped clean on a towel in T2 then you will probably be happy going sockless IF a test run on the treadmill feels good.

Jeff I agree with your assessment. There is absolutely no chance that the trail will be muddy or wet since we have not had a drip of rain for about 3 weeks and the forecast is 100 degrees and sunshine for the weekend.  I'll just rub some body glide inside my shoes and go for it!

Tony, congrats on your daughter's graduation.  I'm sorry that I missed that earlier.

Dirk, I'm glad you have a diagnosis.  I hope the inhaler helps you out with your breathing/coughing issues.

Karl, have fun in Atlanta!  It's probably super hot there right now.  We are leaving for a trip to Las Vegas on Monday, and I imagine it's going to be the same.  I was thinking about doing the TDF bike challenge with all of you, but it looks like I won't have access to a bike while I'm there.  I'll have to spend my extra time running (early in the morning).

Dina, don't worry, I make up all of my workouts as I go these days too.  I'm really glad to hear that your dad is doing better, and I hope that all of your achilles issues resolve.  Good luck in your tri this weekend.

Brenda, you crack me up.  The first time I saw you I was pretty sure that you must have had a full ride basketball scholarship to some school, with as tall as you are and all.  Lol.  I think it's great that you are trying to share some interests with your kids.

Warren, we're all glad to hear that Kaitlyn's surgery went well.  It sounds like the results were good and that she should make a strong recovery.

Tracy, you are crazy!  But we love it!  I can't believe you ran up to the top of these trails.  Really pretty views though.  Thanks for sharing the pics.

Matt, if you weren't a guy I would suggest that maybe your heightened sense of smell would indicate that you are pregnant.  The gas might have been explained that way too.  I guess I better come up with another diagnosis.

JoAnne, have fun with your team at the Mud Run.  You better post pics of all of the mullets for us!

Thanks for all of our mentors too!  We are so lucky!

What's up with all of these silly colds and illnesses around me????  My little guy had a fever all night.  It was 103.7 at one point!  I've managed to get it down to 100 now and he is fast asleep on the floor.  I need a nap!

This is GREAT news Warren.  I'm so happy to hear that!

I just finished reading through everyone's posts from the weekend.  Awesome adventures and accomplishments as usual!  I finished my 156 miles for MS this weekend and what a blast it was!  I would encourage anyone to do these events.  It was so much fun and a lot of hard work.  A couple of the guys I ended up biking with for the most part were very strong and on the second day we hooked up with another 6 guys and paced off each other for the last 23 miles averaging between 23 and 35 mph.  SO FUN!  We also did a sprint finish where I came in 2nd by about a wheel or so.  I can't wait to do it next year.  For everyone that contributed to the cause, I thank you so much.  The entire event raised over $2,000,000.  So glad to be a part of such a great group of people.

Aw, poor little guy.  Sorry to hear that.  Hoping that these little colds give him a strong immune system later in life.
