Brenda and I were texting back and forth, I was, frantically at times, trying to keep up with you on the tracker and getting my own workouts in while trying to keep up with everyone else. Vero, We haven't heard anything about your race. How did you fare? Congrats to everyone that raced yesterday. It was such a huge day for the Junkies! For me, well it looks like I'll be waiting another week before I can register for IMWI. They've delayed the registration fro a week because of technical issues from previous years. Now I'm getting really nervous!!! I will be insanely disappointed if I don't get in to this race!
13/47 overall and 7/18 in 40-49 age group. I would have podiumed any other age group. Ah, well that's what I get for starting this whole tri thing in my 40's. I was 56 seconds slower than my personal best on this course but overall I'm pleased with the results.
The swim was awesome. I have never tried to go out hard right off the start on a race swim start before. With only 18 men in my wave I figured this was the time to try it. At the horn I went full (reckless) sprint for the first 75 to 100 yards. At about 60 yards I realized I was elbow to elbow with another swimmer and we were alone. I could see a couple of swimmers close together maybe 5 yards ahead of us when I sighted. I kept motoring on and the other guy faded a bit. At the turn buoy at about 200 yards I glanced back and was a few feet ahead of him and pretty solidly in 4th. I held that position and exited the water 4th in my wave.
I think I had faster transitions than in my previous race on this course, but I did make a mental error that cost me on the run. I forgot to put my water bottle on the bike when I set up transition! I didn't realize until I was already out on the bike course. It was only an 8 mile sprint on the bike, but it was very dry and also a bit smoky from the Yosemite fire (only about 50 miles away from the race location). I would have been able to keep my throat wet during the bike and that would have helped my run. I hammered the whole way on the bike anyway and I think I was a bit faster on the bike than I was last time. I still have to check my bike computer for verification on that.
I had to get water for a very parched throat at both aid stations on the run (run start and just after the turnaround). My throat is very sore today.
In the end I did get a small trophy for second place for best costume. I'll post a couple pictures once I get a chance tonight.
Great job going for it on the swim and hammering the bike! Take care of that sore throat - ouch. And I am waiting for pics...... |

![]() What do you all know about blisters? I have a huge one on my heel which I think is from when I iced it too much and kinda gave myself frostbite..... Anyway, it is not full of fluid and it does not hurt. It is just loose, white skin covering the bottom of my heal. I don't know if I should just leave it or try to take that loose skin off? |

You had a solid race regardless of adding time to your PR. Adding time can be for any countless number of reasons; Warmer temps, wind, not begin rested well.......... Tony, are you glad you signed up for the next IM...lol Well gotta go out of town to work, so I'll talk to ya'll Fri. Ya'll all recover!!! Karl believe it or not I am happy I signed up for another Ironman. I think I'm still in a state of shock and awe but it will wear off soon enough and I won't know to do with myself if I don't have something to train for. I need a purpose when training and Mont Tremblant is going to give me that reason to train hard. I also don't want to lose the fitness I built up for this IM. So my goal for IMMT is like my friend Bobby said to get faster. I have 11 months to figure it out. |

IMWI is getting more popular and it sold out in a day last year but it won't sell out in minutes. So just be ready to pull the trigger when it opens. Next year is going to be epic with you, Brenda and JoAnne doing it. I had such a great time this year with Brenda and JoAnne being there I am really considering going next year just to see and support you guys. If I can swing it I'm gonna do it. It's gonna be great. |

Vero congrats on great race. It sounds like you had a great swim. I think it was a great idea to go with a harder effort to see how'd you do. It sounds like it worked out pretty well. The lack of hydration didn't slow you down either you put in a solid effort. I hope you are feeling better though today. |

I think the only thing I may do is an impromtu sprint that we are putting together ourselves just for fun and for the beer. |

BTW, pics of the Superman kit or "it didn't happen." Race report is up: Superman Triathlon and here's the proof The guy on the far left is Triathlon Man. I chatted with him before the race start. This race was his 570th triathlon. The back of his shirt said "Life's too short to be wimpy". How many of you remember watching "the Greatest American Hero" on TV? Did you recognize him in the middle? |

![]() | ![]() Those superman tri pics are great, and that looks like a super race (see what I did there???) Matt, I knew you'd put that dragon to bed this year. Great job. 70.3 is serious! Here's my Pumpkinman race report. Now my question for the group. I have had serious leg cramps at the end of both my 70.3 swims this year. The first was in very cold ocean water (56) so I though it might be related to that. But this weekend the water was 72 and beautiful. I eat lots of bananas in my diet, and I think overall my diet is really good (besides the ice cream). Anyone ever hear of cramping like this on the swim? Could it just be my lack of swim fitness due to the dearth (nearly zero) of swim training? I need to figure it out because I can't really judge my run with the cramping I am experiencing from the swim on. Edited by wbayek 2013-09-10 1:01 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question/Thought on Recovery that came up during a conversation yesterday. Is there a difference in the definition of recovery for a weight lifter as there is for an endurance athlete? My thought is that a recovery week should be removal of intensity and reduce mileage down to 30-40% for a week then go right back to normal loads the next week. A "weight lifter" Stated that a recovery week should be no activity for 7-10 days. To me this seems excessive and pointless, but I have no desire to have huge muscles. So should a weight lifter drop all activity for a week? I am not changing my method and will continue to believe that recovery is for the weak and will continue on, but curious on how you all thought about this. The time frame we were talking about was 12 week build then 1 week recovery. |

![]() Vero, I absolutely love all the costumes. That looks like a really fun race! Warren I just saw a thread in tritalk from a person who suffered leg cramps in the swim at the same race you were in. The only time I had cramps swimming they were in my feet and it was dehydration issue. I'll be interested to hear what everyone has to say. My friend that is a total newbie swimmer is having trouble with leg cramps. But she is also marathon training early every morning then swimming a few hours later. It is not surprising that she gets leg cramps. Edited by trigal38 2013-09-10 8:42 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vero the costumes look great and I agree that must have been a really fun tri to participate in. You guys all looked great. Warren did you get to meet any of the NY contingent at Pumpkinman? As far as the leg cramps go I can say I had the sort of the same issue during my IM swim. I got a few that I don't normally get. I'm not sure if it was lack of hydration, the conditions of the swim or due to the overall time I was in the water. It didn't hinder me at all but not sure why it happened. Matt I would never take 7 to 10 days off as far as recovery goes. To me I think it depends on what you are training for and where you are in that plan if you are following one. So a recovery week to me is a reduction in the volume of training you do but how much depends on the above. I will defer to the experts here on this. I finallly got home tonight. Man what a long drive from NY to Wisconsin and back. I think 4 days of driving total, 2 there and 2 back and probably 10 hours each day with stops. It was definitely worth it and I did pass through many of the home states you guys live in. I covered NY, NJ, PA, OH, IN, IL an WI. Not too bad, I think the driving was worse than doing the Ironman except for the swim, that was brutal lol. I'll work on my race report tomorrow. I will also work on a something for Dirk, Brenda and JoAnne in regards to their IM journey for next year. Sort of a lessons learned type thing. I just wanted to share what I went through this year. If there is like one thing you guys can get out of it that would be great. If not it'll just reinforce what you guys already know. |

![]() Glad you made it safely home, IRONMAN TONY! I assume you took the rest of the week off work so you can get caught up on sleep. How's your body feeling? I'm looking forward to your race report and your insight report of the course. I woke up around 3:30 this morning in a cold sweat thinking of biking down and then up the helix. I'm in real trouble if I'm already starting to worry about that with a year to go! What an awesome weekend in Madison with getting to meet IRONMAN TONY and JOANNE! Volunteering just makes me the happiest ever. When I grow up I want to do it full-time. I've read VERO, MATT and WARREN'S race reports. Good job, guys! I'm spending the day recovering from a tooth extraction I had to have yesterday. Ugh, ugh. I inherited bad teeth and have constant problems even though I do all the brushing/flossing and preventative stuff possible. I can't do any physical activity for 48 hours and I'm a bit jittery wanting to get moving. Oh well. I plan on standing over my kitchen sink and stove canning some tomatoes from my garden. Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!

Brenda I'm glad you and Tennie made it home safely as well and can't thank you both enough for being there. You guys were a big part of the experience and you both helped make my day and awesome one, thank you again. I'm off from work the rest of the week and the plan is to just relax and reflect on what a great experience this has been for me. I still can't believe it and it's still sinking in. I do plan on working out this week but I use the term lightly. I would like to get a few swims in at the lake and maybe a take a ride on the bike this weekend. It will be just for fun. No running this week, it'll be long walks with Luna instead. I'm actually not feeling too bad. I'm tired from the lack of sleep I got last week so I'm hoping to catch up the rest of this week. My legs are still sore as well but getting better. The last marathon I ran was almost 2 years ago so I've forgotten what that felt like. Overall I came out of the race feeling great. I can't believe how good I felt for the entire run and then the finish. That was pretty amazing. I had to laugh at your 3:30 am nightmare, welcome to the Ironman journey! You, JoAnne and Dirk will be thinking about IMWI every moment of every day for the next year. Trust me that is what it was like for me. No matter what you do or what you think about it it'll always come back to IMWI. You can be doing the laundry and you'll think about how it will relate to some aspect of your Ironman training or race lol. I promise to get you guys my write up shortly. I am also going to see if I can be there to support you guys next year as either a volunteer or to just go and chase you guys around the on the course. You guys have no idea how much it meant to me to see you all out there I would love to be able to do the same for you guys. I'm sorry to hear about the tooth extraction I hope you get some rest today and feel better soon. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay Dirk, just finished my second long run of the week... that's (2) 12 mile runs in about 1.5 days. It was brutal (90 degrees w/ 70% humidity) but I got it done... still not sure how I will ever do 26 after a 112 bike though! Tony, I've been thinking a lot about how freaking strong you finished your race with that run.. Give me your secret. I'm looking forward to some cooler weather at some point... 1 hr in today my shorts were literally dripping with sweat and felt like they weighed 10lbs. I weighed in 8lbs lighter after the run... so the hard part is trying to get all that water back in my body. The past week, I've been having muscle spasms in my calves. Anyone know what causes this? My best guess is lack of hydration... besides trying to rehydrate, is there anything else I can do or take? I'm off the multivitamin that I was taking bc it was making me feel wierd... For those of you that are upping your distances on the bike and run, I highly recommend a foam roller. I dont think I would have been able to complete my run today without getting all over that thing last night... ha! |

If you don't want to wait until he opens the plan this fall/winter, you could use last year's plan starting anytime. One of the benefits of doing it with everyone else is the camaraderie on the site. However, you will likely be into an IM plan at some point so I'm not sure where this would fit in. Getting some solid bike training in ahead of the IM training is probably not a bad idea since IM is largely about the bike. Matt, I posted in your race report, but since you plan to speed up your 70.3 time, does that mean I have to sign up for another one next year? ![]() |
