brick94513 - 2010-03-23 4:37 PM Buddy and I got a great MTB ride in today.  40 miles through Nisene Marks and Soquel Demonstration Forest.  Weather was beautiful today.

40 miles on a mtn bike....that's hardcore

x2 - crazy hard!

That's pretty amazing.  We don't really have any long trails like that around here. There is a 20+ mile ride that I like that usually takes me about 4 hours. We go up one canyon, up the mountain, along the ridge, then down the other side and out another canyon. Mostly single track except the last few miles coming out of the canyon that is paved. We usually hit about 60 on that part. Great ride but only half the distance of what you did yesterday. Its the longest local ride that I know of.

We're very fortunate here in the bay area.  We have several connecting parks in the East Bay.  I can connect a mixture of single track, fireroads, and streets into a loop anywhere from 30 to 120 miles.  But there is a price, it all includes ridiculously steep climbs.  Good training grounds though!

Sounds amazing.  I've seen a couple of the trails on foot. It would be a blast on a bike.

Just read Pirate Girl's XTERRA Saipan race report on her blog. Sounds amazing. I had no idea the XTERRA series was such a big deal. I knew we had one locally but had no idea what it was really about. I'll have to keep it in mind for the future.

I think I'm using 'amazing' too much.  I'll have to find another word to replace it.  Its just that everything about triathlons is so amazing.

They hurt Paul - i severely under nutritioned mine and almost died (it felt like I did )

My hope is that my better swimming, stronger bike skills, and hopefully ability to run will make it less painful!

Where the heck is Saipan anyways?????

Just googled it. Its part of the Mariana Islands in the Pacific.  Kind of by Guam. Between Japan and Australia.
Sounds perfect for you military people.  Get sent to Guam and then do XTERRA Saipan.  Chance of a lifetime.

Man do I have a story to tell about a girl that got stationed in Guam that I "ALMOST" hooked up with - good thing I am a smart man and used my large head to think for once!!!

So in the Navy after my sub duty I decided to go to Security School in Lackland AFB.  We did a Navy portion and then mixed in with Marine Corp and Air Force to finish up the class.  So I meet this girl in my class that was cute and we hung out a lot.  She came to my room one time and wanted certain things to happen.  I was not interested.

1 week later her and 4 other people get kicked out of the class because they were sleeping with a Marine Corp instructor for test answers.  We all got questioned but the rest of us were clean.  I actually ended up as top graduate for the class and I am not Einstein so cheating was not real necessary.

We even made the San Antonio newspaper.  I don't think that school was ever the same after us!!

I firmly believe that if people spent as much time preparing as they do trying to cheat, they would get better scores/grades/etc. Plus they wouldn't have to worry about the consequences.  Sounds like you were an example of this in your story.

What happened to the instructor?

wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 5:18 AM I wish I were a better mechanic but it is fun trying new things and having the LBS to help you out if required!

I'm self taught.  Luckily, never had any financially costly mistakes, just a few time costly ones.  I've built my last few bikes by myself.  It is nice to maintain your own equipment: pride, cost, no waiting for serive, and being self-reliant.  If I'm way out on a trail, at least I have the reassurance that I'll be able to rig something to get me home.

I can recommend two books for anyone interested in trying things on their own:

Park Tool Book
Zinns: Art of Bike Maintenance

I used to ride snowmobiles every night for work.  I'd ride a minimum of 20 miles and sometimes up to 100.  I had no problem tinkering on the machines when they weren't working correctly out in the field, in the dark and cold.  Why am I terrified to do more to my bikes than change a tire and switch out pedals?  Please!  This is stupid!

In the dark and cold its life or death so you have more incentive. Plus if you screwed up the snowmobile it was someone else's money. Screw up the bike and its your money.

I'm sure it's a combo of being cold so ya better think of something quick and personal money at stake on the bike.  I know I'm perfectly capable of fixing a bike, though.  Maybe I should buy a beater bike for cheap and just start tearing into it.

wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 2:08 PM I just re-read last years March posts and found out that I was shooting for 6000 bike miles and got to 5616.  If I would have completed TransIowa that would have been another 170.  So I was pretty close to a guesstimate 9 months out.

This year I am thinking 7000 with the bike tour.  Between that and TransIowa = 2000 miles and I think I can handle 5K on my own!

That is all!

He says "That is all" like its no big deal.  I think that many miles would be an incredible feat!

wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 2:28 PM I have a funny owl story:  I am full of them today!

At our old house we had a side yard that had no grass at all so I tilled it up, prepped it for sod and got a load of sod delivered.  All of sudden the neighbors are coming out and looking over at our house.  I was like what are they doing?  Why are they checking my butt out?  (They were kind of strange! and yes I have a nice butt )  I go ask my wife what is going on - the neighbors are checking me out.  All of sudden there is a huge owl on a stump about 10' away from me.

And I thought it was my butt!

Hey where is Melissa???????

Funny that the first thing you thought was that they were checking out your butt. Now if it were me, I know that's the last thing they would be checking out.
