Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been thinking about finding a running program for the Fall/Winter this year to see if I can increase my base speed a bit. My training has really been a mess this summer and I'd like to focus on something to get some regularity back. Any suggestions on a program?
I have done 2 short runs this week with my new running partner. This is PI. She is a 2 year old rescue and the newest member of our household. She has taken to running with me like she's done it her whole life. She is small for a Lab (only 54 lbs) so we assume she is a mix, but she sure looks all lab.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by wbayek Originally posted by DirkP Originally posted by pistuo Okay Dirk, just finished my second long run of the week... that's (2) 12 mile runs in about 1.5 days. It was brutal (90 degrees w/ 70% humidity) but I got it done... still not sure how I will ever do 26 after a 112 bike though! Tony, I've been thinking a lot about how freaking strong you finished your race with that run.. Give me your secret. Tony's secret was one part great bike fitness, but mostly what many would consider a stupid easy effort on the bike. I've never done IM but I've read hundreds of IM race reports and bike data, so take this with a grain of salt. Almost everyone rides the bike way too hard, and they pay dearly on the run. People push too hard, especially the hills, which means uneven effort, which means the effect on your body is even higher than you think. It takes some serious discipline and testosterone control to execute a proper bike in an IM. The interesting thing is that the time difference between crazy easy and too hard isn't really that much - I would say around 20 minutes for most mortal AGer. Compare that to walking the last 6 miles because you hit the bike too hard. This probably doesn't apply to people going sub 5 for the bike and sub 10 overall, but in general it holds pretty true. Even in 70.3 racing it's common to see people cooking the bike. I can't tell you how much I was passed this weekend by people standing up and hammering at 60 rpm flying up hills, only to pass them on the other side while they had stopped pedaling and were recovering from their KOM effort. And that was with me riding pretty steady watts, though I do go a bit higher up the hills. My run was a bit of a disaster for other reasons, but had I ridden a hard bike leg I'm convinced it would have been much, much worse. Warren I think what you are saying here is very true. It applies to both the half and full distance IM races. One thing my friend Wynn stressed to me was that your legs are a very poor indicator of measuring your performance hence the power meter as you are aware is the way to go. However short of having one it is much better to dial your effort back. The Edurance Nation team stresses this point, don't ride the course at your could do time ride the course at your should do time. It's really not going to be that much longer in time and you'll have a much better run. With that said it then comes down to how you execute that on the bike course. Your example of the PM 70.3 is a great one on what you shouldn't be doing on the bike. It's not easy to be patient but that is the key to long course racing on the bike. It's like you said you need to be disciplined. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vero congrats on your families newest addition. She's a beautiful girl and yeah I'm a little biased when it comes to lab's because I've got one too and she is an awesome dog. I'm planning to start to get my lab Luna out to take short runs with me. It'll be good for both of us. One thing I wanted to clarify which Brenda informed me about today was that I totally mixed up who I saw when I finished my swim at IMWI heading to transition. It wasn't Brenda but it was JoAnne! That goes to show you just how out of it I was following the swim JoAnne I apologize and I have to be honest I was totally shell shocked with deer in the headlights look when you were talking to me lol. Looking back on it now I'm absolutely amazed that I found my way to transition. I think that swim is really going to scar me for life! I'm still having nightmares about it lol. |

Awesome running partner! As far as a running plan to build your endurance, I highly recommend the the BarryP 1:2:3 plan. You can probably search on slowtwitch and find the details, or I could drag out the full text of it if you're interested. Essentially all the running is at a manageable pace. You run 6 days a week, with the runs being increments of 3 runs at time/distance 1x, 2 runs at time/distance 2x, and 1 run at time/distance 3x. So when I did this a few winters ago, I started with 3 runs of 20 minutes, 2 runs of 40 minutes, and 1 run of 60 minutes, and slowly built up to 40, 80, and 120. I stayed completely healthy all winter and had great improvements. My pace for the runs was all easy, and the only "speed" work I did were strides during the long run per Jeff's advice. I did add some intervals toward the end of the winter after consulting Dirk and Jeff for specific advice. |

Tony, I've been thinking a lot about how freaking strong you finished your race with that run.. Give me your secret. I'm looking forward to some cooler weather at some point... 1 hr in today my shorts were literally dripping with sweat and felt like they weighed 10lbs. I weighed in 8lbs lighter after the run... so the hard part is trying to get all that water back in my body. The past week, I've been having muscle spasms in my calves. Anyone know what causes this? My best guess is lack of hydration... besides trying to rehydrate, is there anything else I can do or take? I'm off the multivitamin that I was taking bc it was making me feel wierd... For those of you that are upping your distances on the bike and run, I highly recommend a foam roller. I dont think I would have been able to complete my run today without getting all over that thing last night... ha! Stay on track with your running and riding and you'll be fine. Your rides are certainly on track at this point based on your posts here. Your running isn't discussed much, hence my FB post keeping you honest. I am curious about the 2 - 12 milers being so close together. Is that something the plan called for? If I were to guess you needed to shift your schedule and it fit best by putting them close as you did. That wouldn't be something I would recommend doing on a regular basis unless you have a typically high volume, and, well, we know the answer to that thought. Like Tony and Warren have already said, IM is about the bike! Set yourself up well by having both of them dialed in and don't skip any of them if you don't have too. Cramps are, as Jeff siad, a topic of much debate. Electrolytes would be my first place to look. I drink Powerade Zero much of the time to replace electrolytes but also drink water. I am not balanced in my approach of water and Powerade, I lean toward electrolyte replacement more. My point is that you should try to get close between the two to make sure you are replacing both. Without one or the other you will begin to feel the adverse effects of a completely out of balance plan. The plan had one more day in between the runs, but the second one was the day after an 8.5 hour brick WO which I plan to do on Saturday... My thinking switching them was two fold - 1) try to get them out of the way and recover before the long bike (which I want to do well on) and 2) I felt like putting them close together would sort of simulate a longer run (like be the equivalent of a 3.5 hour run). Looking at my plan, there arent very many long runs... I think there's one more 3 hour run left. Interestingly, I was looking at the intermediate plan and the beginner plan I am doing has longer bike rides... ha! |

I have to be honest my only goal from here until Dec. is not to gain any weight LOL! Any races I do will be totally spur of the moment. I have to hand it to you though for getting it done this past weekend and following it up with a bunch of these races. The HIM could have been a season ender and you're out here racing until Nov! Make you get some type of offseason in there following the HM. We all need a little a break. |

We had a chocolate lab we had to pt down in Nov 2010. She was a great dog. Well, except that she was a total freak when it would storm. I won't get into the long stories of her behavior during storms. But, she was only 60-ish pounds most of her life so yours may not be to far out of line. I guess there are two different breeds of labs. One is an American breed, which I believe is the smaller of the two, and the other is a British breed that can approach something like 80-100 pounds for the males. |

Putting runs of that distance close together, at least on a regular basis, can provide a higher likelihood of injury. I think you would be better off having kept it in the same place it was. The idea of the training plans is to build your fitness and endurance at the cost of forced adaptation. Allowing the fatigue to set in before the long bike coming up may have been the plans intention. That's not to say you have keep everything on the schedule exactly as it is, sometimes it's a must to move a workout for a number of reasons. BTW, before to long I hope to be finding my own full IM plan to be ready to begin once I hit the cycle. |

![]() Matt that is funny. I woke up, let the dogs out and the cooler weather is finally here. My first thought - brrr, I don't want to race tri in this cool air! I like it hot, then everyones run slows down like mine
Grrr, my hip feels out of place again. I'm hobbling around like a grandma. Back to the chiro I guess.
Warren I've tried Barry P plan before. It was really difficult for me. I started to not enjoy running, it became a have to instead of a want to. But I know I need to have an open mind and not make excuses if I want to get better. Happy Friday everyone!!!!!!!! |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, haven't been around much as Ive been crazy busy, and add that to the fact that my work has blocked all sports sites on the net, Now that shes back to work teaching and we have to get the little one off to day care the days are pretty busy. I see alot of early morning training rides this winter, hopefully its pretty mild this winter and I can keep my run mileage up outside. I've picked a 70.3 for next summer, its July 6th in St. Andrew's New Brunswick. This year was year two for the race, however they were just taken over by Challenge as their 2nd North American race. Although I think they have just recently announced another. If anyone is interested in doing the race, search Challenge St. Andrews and it should pop up. Beautiful town on the ocean, right on the Canada/US border. Amazing old hotel where the race is run from. Apparently they gave racers a $99/night room rate. It usually several hundred dollars. Take a look, might be a good international race for anyone interested. Cheers all, I check back in tomorrow. Derek |

I know I owe my wife BIG TIME this year without her none of this would have been possible. I need to figure out something to do for her and in a big way. The race sounds like a good one and from what I've read Challenge does put on some good events. I believe they took over the race IM had in Canada in Penticton. If I weren't going to Quebec for IM Mont Tremblant I'd consider it. I am planning to do a HIM again and it will be Syracuse. I think I'm gonna register in the next week or so it's $199 and we will have a bunch of people here doing IMLP and IMMT doing it. Any takers here for that? It's a challenging course and a good warm up for IMWI. |

Every week seems to get busier than the last Vero thats awesome that you have a new runnign partner, our beast lab is about 100# and we have to weight him down with a dog pack and weights and he still runs faster than me lol Dirk I hope your injuries are better ![]() Matt....wholly moly ...... Good for you! Tony it's funny Maria and I were saying when you came out of the water how in a zone you were and that you totally didnt even know we were there ![]() Warren 11 different kinds of ice cream that is awesome. Derek nice of you to make dinner for your wife ![]() Brenda you'll be fine on the helix it's not as bad as it looks. Dina hope the hip feels better Will nice on the back to back runs! I definetly plan on doing Jorge's plan I know that this is my weakest of the 3 I also am signing up for Masters swim 2x a week. I know I have a ton of work to do but I have learned soooo much this past year and am excited to get working! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have finally finished with all of the race reports from last weekend. Each and everyone of them has it's own inspirational motivations. Warren's tough as nails approach to being able to fight through the cramps for essentially 70 miles. Matt's journey past a horrible race last season and the redemption of this race and seeing the pics with smiles and kids crossing the line with him. Tony, well, you took the cake!! To go from not swimming and trying to learn to discipline yourself to work all of the long hard workouts for all these months, NEGATIVE split the run and finish while bring tears to Brenda's eyes is so motivational as I hope to begin my "journey" soon. Enjoying this group and each person in it has become an integral part of triathlon for me. Being a witness from across many states and even borders to befriend people I've never even seen in person has been truly amazing. Watching people accomplish their dreams and get off the couch and into shape is amazing. Dream big! Then achieve your dreams! |

After a week of eating poorly and drinking lot's of beer I'll be going for a swim in the lake and follow it up with a 30 mile bike ride. All easy and only for fun for me. My legs are still a little heavy but no longer sore thankfully so I should be able to manage the bike ride just fine. I cleaned up my baby my bike, man she was a mess from the race this past weekend. I was also able to fix my left shifter which popped out on me as well so I won't have to spend time or money taking it to the LBS to do that. I'm hoping to wrap up before the NFL games kickoff at 1 pm EST and I'll be working on the rest that Blue Moon Seasonal beer I have left. I love the Rounder brew that stuff is awesome lol. |

Personally it doesn't matter if you ride solo or with a group. I did most of my long rides with company. I think as long as you don't draft you are good as that won't help you. Also I think it helps to have other stronger riders to push you and keep your effort up. Just doing a 100 plus miles is mental training enough lol. As far as the run goes for me I lived off the course at IM. I drank mainly powerbar perform the sports drink they served and I ate what was on the course mainly pretzels, potato chips, cookie peices, bananas and bonk breaker bites. The most important thing is to keep drinking and eating on the run course the same as you would on the bike. |
