Been a while since anyone mentioned FOOD around here (yes I'm hungry, aren't you?).

Anyone know what flavor powergels are going to be made available on race day? =) Please say strawberry banana...

Whichever one is about to expire and has the chunks in it.

Sorry. I just finished off a case like that. Every time I ate one, I didn't know whether to chew or just swallow. They should make a mystery gel, kinda like the Dum-Dum suckers.

Not sure about the gels, hope not chocolate.

I know they said Ironman Perform would be lemon/lime on the bike and mango something on the run.

They did not mention chicken broth on the run.  I have heard it is the best thing ever so I hope it is there.

Agreed, chocolate would be a disaster. I dig the orange mango IM Perform though.

So since we are all sort of rambling ...

Did my final long(ish) run this afternoon.  It was 95 degrees on the back porch thermometer when I started.  About .5mi in I decided a haircut was going to be needed soon.  Finished the run (14mi), quick shower, off to the barbershop.  Got my head shaved.  It feels wonderful .... bring on the heat!

Based on the current forecast we will all need to regulate output on the bike to avoid to avoid a painful marathon!

That's why man invented the power meter. Cool

I can not wait to be able to afford a power meter (and coach for that matter).  Until then I may glance at my HR, but RPE will be my weapon of choice.

A power meter really is a game changer if you train and use it correctly.  Once you have your FTP, everything falls into place as far as what percentages to ride for what distances and so on.  A watt is a watt is a watt -- whether it's warm or cold, headwind or tailwind, hilly or flat, etc.  Ride your goal watts and let everyone else play the guessing game of whether they're pushing too little or too hard.

Honest question here (and I do love training with the power meter)... but since power is a measure of work; wouldn't it take more out of you to push XX watts when it's 90 degrees with 90% humidity then it would to push XX watts at 65 degrees with low humidity? I know it's the same amount of work/effort; just that your body is dealing with the heat and humidity so it takes a bigger toll.

You nailed it. Power is an output and is absolute. A watt is a watt. Problem is that your body's ability to produce that watt is quite variable. Your ability to produce a watt in 60 degrees, no humidity, in the first hour of activity is much different than it's ability to produce that same watt in 90 degrees, 80% humidity during hour 5 of activity. Those who established a goal avg wattage for the race in cool weather (and don't use hr) will not realize that they are blowing up at mile 95.

I would type something but TJ pretty much wrote what I would have wrote.

His last sentence was spot on.  Make sure you have trained at your goal pace in the warm weather (if possible) or otherwise back off the wattage a little bit.  Some people use HR + power to keep things in check.  I did that at IMFL and will more than likely do that again.

I'm usually a lurker, but the taper has given me some free time, and I don't know what to with it.  I really am going a little crazy without the long workouts.  And it doesn't help that I am having trouble adjusting my food intake, and so now feel like I've put on some of the weight I've lost, and now don't have time to lose it, and can't exercise it off.  Taper madness!  Gah!

Socially acceptable or not I have on more then 1 occasion very seriously considered doing so. My current though is using IM to explain it to people "I did it for IM!" and hope they don't ask any further questions

Just think of the money we'd save on hair products and cuts. AND, the time savings alone would be so welcome, it takes me so long to wash this thick mop of mine I'd cut out a good hour a week without it.

Do you really think that being socially acceptable really matters....lol......I mean really look what we are going to do in a week, we are a little off our rockers to begin with so who cares what other people think, hell they think we are crazy allready:-) so cut your hair and swim topless you will be just fine.

Erin, I cut my hair boy short for my first IM in 09. 2 years later and it is still growing out. Loved it when it was super short. Now I just want my pony tail back. Your hair is beautiful don't cut it!

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread (13 to 16 ounces)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Dash salt
  • Praline Topping, recipe follows
  • Maple syrup

Directions

Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, half-and-half, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and beat with a rotary beater or whisk until blended but not too bubbly. Pour mixture over the bread slices, making sure all are covered evenly with the milk-egg mixture. Spoon some of the mixture in between the slices. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

The next day, preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Spread Praline Topping evenly over the bread and bake for 40 minutes, until puffed and lightly golden. Serve with maple syrup.

Praline Topping:

  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and blend well. Makes enough for Baked French Toast Casserole

I have cut down on the eating so no problem there. But the sleeping has cut back also, I could not fall asleep untill 2 in the morning and back up at 6. Man I wish that I could fall to sleep early but this is every night. I think about every aspect of the race until I fall asleep. Maybe I need to eat then go to bed.

Awesome - Think about the aero benefits!  I am going today - I usually get a 1.5, today maybe a 1, not sure my family could handle a total hair loss.  Remeber that Sienfeld episode, I am sure I would be the guy whose hair does not grow back.

That would definitely be a nice trade-off.

Last night as I was driving home from work thinking about my last long run I had to keep looking at this. Definitely made it hard to motivate me to get out the door!

I've been planning the timing of my next buzz-cut as well. It's tonight after my run. Just enough time for my #1 buzz to grow back a tiny bit so my scalp doesn't fry. I wear a visor when running so the top of my head gets baked sometimes if I cut it too close to a race.

11 days...
