Day 576, 15.2 miles. With this run I have gone over 1900 miles so far this year and on my fourth pair of running shoes. Getting ready to start on my fifth pair soon.

Day 577, 30.4 miles and did it get hot. I lost 8 pounds while running today even though I drank 120 oz of water, and took in 700 calories with gels and shot blocks. I guess I will rehydrate with several cold Sam Adams Boston Lagers.

Cheif--you are absolutely freakin out of control!  I can't get over your miles.  So totally inspiring.  I have never known anyone who gets as many miles as you.  Strong, strong work.

Please have as many dang beer as your heart desires, and some really yummy food too.  Take care of you!

Day 578, 10.1 hot humid recovery miles. 91 degrees out when I started but it may be that warm in August running the 100 miler, I hope not though.

Swtich that for the props but I am just an ordinary person trying to see where this running can take me. I just took up running 5 years ago so I am still fairly new to it even though I will be 51 later this year.

Well that just makes you even more ridiculously awesome:)  Seriously?  You just started running 5 years ago?  WTH? Now you're just making us all look bad;)

 What motivated you to start?

I struggle with how much to practice running  in the heat too.  The run is always at the hottest part of the race, so I better get used to it, huh?

Where is your 100 miler going to be?

Lockport, New York

I started running by chance really. I bought a treadmill and vowed to not let it become a cloths hanger to lose some weight. After I retired from the Navy I quit smoking and got fat, close to 250 pounds. I started walking on the treadmill and after about two months, I could barely walk a mile at a slow pace at first, I found that a slow jog caused my legs to cramp up less. There was a 5k in town in about two weeks so I called an old Navy buddy who runs marathons and told him what I had been doing and if he thought I could run the 5k. I had only to managed to run 1/4 mile at a time at this point and was still above 200 pounds. He said I could do it and to sign him up, he would come out and run it with me. He showed up at about 2 in the afternoon and as old Navy guys will do, we started drinking beer right away and did not stop until my daughter who was running the race too came out in the garage and asked us if we were going to bed, it was 3:30 in the morning. We managed to get up and make the starting line, I ran the whole way, still drunk, is just under 29 minutes and I was hooked. That was mid March of 2009.

I ran 4 half marathons that fall and my first marathon the following spring a year exactly from the 5k. I hated running in the Navy too and would only do the 1.5 miles we had to do twice a year. I joked I was in the 3 mile a year club. I found that I really enjoy running and how it has transformed me as a person both on the inside and out. I am probably in the best shape of my life and if I ate better, not going to happen, and drank less beer, not going to happen either, I would probably be in even better shape. So now in less than 4 years I have run 11 marathons and 2 ultras, Qualified and ran Boston once and plan to return next year. First marathon was in March of 2010.

Here is an article my local paper did on me after my 50 miler. The only thing really wrong with the story is I have lost over 100 pounds not 80.

You are an amazing man Ron.  That is incredible.  Thank you so much for sharing your story, one of my favorites on BT.  This makes running "with you" even better :)

Hugs to you.

Day 579, 10.2 miles and with todays run it puts me over 5000 miles since the start of my streak. 5008.1miles to be exact.

Switch

I feel honored to be able to virtually run with all you good folks here. You are not only running but swimming and biking too. I did both last summer a lot but it really took away from what I love and that is running so I gave up biking for this year. I still hit the lake for some swims after the water warms up but more for enjoyment rather than training although I usually end up swimming 1-2 miles every time I hope in the water.

Do you have a race coming up in the future?

5000 miles?!  So, so awesome.   You mentioned your daughter coming out to remind you guys that it was 3:30 a.m. and you had a race in the morning (love that, btw).  What does your family think of your new love?

I do have some races coming up.  My next race is the Door County HIM.  It will be my first time racing that distance, so I'm going to try to not go too crazy, especially on the bike.   AG Nats 3 weeks after that (oly), and then another HIM a week after AGN.  It will be a fairly intense four weeks from July 20-August 18 for me :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#17, 4.2 tempo.  Felt strong.

Wow that is an aggressive schedule but I am sure you will do well. At first they thought I was crazy now they know I am. Not for running but for the distances I am running.

My streak has ended at 284.  I ran well for my last run of the streak, but my knee had been bothering me and I woke on day 285 with it too swollen and stiff to run.  Add a bike crash for my daughter and that was that.

As with most things that don't go my way, I was pizzed off for about 14 minutes, mourned the loss of my goal to run every day for a year, and moved on.  Luckily, there are plenty of life's hills to still climb.

I ran right at 1150 miles for the streak coming off of PF so I'm happy where it took me.

Good luck to all......I suppose I'll get back to daily running soon enough.

So sorry to hear this but you have a good outlook about it. It is still quite an accomplishment by running 284 days in a row while you were biking and swimming as well. Do not be a stranger in the thread, let us know how your racing season goes.

Thanks for having a hand in starting this. Everyone on the thread has been inspiring, including yourself. It couldn't have been easy making it as far as you did, especially with how much involvement you have with your kids and their athletics. Good luck to you, and them, and hope to see you back here soon.

And the wheels fall off in the home stretch... I'd already broken my streak twice (weekend heat waves are apparently my weakness), but with a couple two-a-days I would have still been able to complete the 30 in 30 goal (or 44 in 44 for me). So what do I go and do? Try to cram it all in at once with 3 runs yesterday, plus a half hour on the bike. Today my legs are made of lead and there's just no way. Rookie mistake?

In any case, I think this needed to end anyway. As much fun as it's been, and my running has benefitted tremendously, it's come at the expense of bike sessions, and I'm not prepared for my race Sunday. So I'll be with you all in spirit (and in awe of you 500+ folks), but this is the end if the line for me.
