Subject: RE: Nibbs XX Happy Anniversary, Jen!
I was trying to catch up on Nibbs from all the talk yesterday. Yes, swimmers do have fabulous bodies. I have always said I love male swimmers' shoulders and abs and male cyclists' legs. Yummy
Speaking of cyclists, I have a story about Levi. I may have told this one before. In 2006, I was riding the Peloton Project, part of the Livestrong charity events. It took place the day before the USPRO road race here in Greenville. We did a metric century, culminating with a climb over Paris Mtn at mile 56. I had only been riding a road bike for a year and really hadn't done much long mileage and certainly very little climbing mileage. I rode with a friend who was an excellent climber and did everything in my power just to keep him in sight on the climbs.
When we got to Paris Mtn, we decided to climb at our own paces and regroup after the descent. I was plugging away in my granny gear when I looked up and saw Mike, my friend the climber, off his bike and walking a bit. I totally lost it and got off the bike myself. Then I hear from behind encouraging voices saying "You are almost at the top, you can do it!" And I turn around to see Chris Wherry, Levi and a bunch of other pros doing their warm ups for tomorrow's race. I was absolutley mortified. Here I am walking my bike up a hill that they fly up 7 times during their race! They were right. I got to a curve and could see the crest. I got back on my bike and rode up and they were on the top, signing autographs and shaking hands. Levi would walk up and down that last little climb encouraging people that were walking and giving shaky riders a push. How many other professional athletes can you imagine would do that the day before an important race?
Doping is an ugly side of the sport of cycling. I can't tell you who is clean and who is not. But I know Levi has character. He was so excited to see so many noobs enjoying the sport of cycling and would speak and encourage everyone he saw. He posed for pics with us charity riders. He helped folks up Paris Mtn. Chris Wherry and his squad signed a few autographs and then went on their way to complete their training ride. I don't think anything bad of them. They were working. But Levi kind of went the extra mile. He ended up finishing second to George Hincapie that year at the USPRO race.
So I'm sad he wasn't allowed to compete this year in the Tour. He is a very nice, mellow guy.
