I am heading to The Triple-T for a solid training weekend. I will not have access to e-mail. However, I know you will all be here to support each other as needed. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I went to a local park and did a SBR with some other BTers.  Total blast.

I was surprised at how not tired I am today given how much my training has lapsed.  But I should be back to it in full gear this week.

Hey Jon, any of the Ironman courses have a relatively flat bike and fairly hilly run?

No. However, I can only speak of the Ironman (I assume you only mean the Ironman branded events and not all Iron-distance courses) I am familiar with. IMKY is a hilly bike and flat run, IMFL is all flat, IMLP is hilly bike and run, IMUT is a hilly bike and run. I also am pretty sure that IMOO is also a hilly bike and I don't know about the run. Maybe Amy Jo can give us more details on the IMOO course.

IMOO bike course is very hilly. Run has a couple hills but mostly flat.

Sorry for the long delay... The bike I rode over the weekend was too small, my LBS got one in from their other store today, I rode it and it's the right size! I have a fitting tomorrow after work then she's all mine!!

56cm 2010 Felt b14 - un-named as of now, any suggestions?

Photos to be posted tomorrow night... First ride is Friday after work! It's been a long few weeks without a bike, can't wait to get back out there!

Ok, this time here it is... BT kept bouncing my photos back for some reason. I added them to my blog (which I have never used until now)

And Jon, really no name for the bike?

Did a local sprint on Sunday.  It went OK for my first tri.  I never found my groove on the swim, but I don't feel bad about that.  A friend of mine in the same wave comes from a swim background and he had the same experience.  But I left the water in the middle of the pack, hopped on the bike, started riding pretty well, and got a flat.  Anyway, I got it fixed, but no telling how much time I lost.  I rode well after that but by that point I was screwed.  Had a decent run (11th fastest out of 117 finishers), which I expected given my background.

All in all it was a good learning experience.  I'd done some training with some friends doing a "sprint" but that's still not that same as race experience.  So I'm glad to get that under my belt.  Although I forgot my race belt at the hotel.  Haha.

Registered for Steelhead last night.

Congrats on your first Tri! I just did a clinic this weekend on fixing a flat and as I told the group...some things (i.e. flat tires) we can't control. You will really like steelhead. I wish I could race it again but it is too close to IMLP. If you haven't done so already, get a hotel room. There are very few hotels in the Benton Harbor area.

Yeah, like I said, I knew I was screwed at that point, but I still was happy with my riding and running.  You just do what you can and keep racing.

The hotels are already booked.  I checked when I registered.  I'll probably stay with a cousin who lives an hour away.  Take Fri afternoon off of work and go down and get my race packet, etc.  I've heard there's long lines for things simply because there are so many people racing.  Then stay in Kalamazoo over night and head back down the next morning.

The race starts at 7.  How soon do you think I should be there?  They suggest setting up your transition the night before, but I'd hate to have some bad weather blow in all over my stuff.  We'll see what the forecast is for the overnight.

Just rack your bike the night before and set-up your gear in the morning. Bike racking the night before a race is mandatory in the bigger races no matter what the weather is so you should get comfortable with it now. It is stressful the first few times but it doesn't bother me anymore. The weather won't hurt your bike. You ride in the rain right? If it makes you feel better you can cover the seat and anything else you want with garbage bags but honestly it really isn't necessary. Why keep your seat dry when you will be wet coming out of the water anyway? If you can have someone drop you off near the park (as close as you can con the "security" into letting you get). Tell security you are just getting dropped off and then the driver will come back out and park in the designated spot. If you get there early enough you might find a spot very close to transition and you can just park there.

Ride in the rain?  Er, usually I trade a run and bike workout when it rains.  I guess I should practice riding in the rain....

And you're right about getting used to racking bikes the night before.  It's just a little irrationally unnerving to me because my bike was new last Nov., and the night before my tri last weekend there was a couple tornadoes about 10-15 mi off.  There was enough crazy weather on the course that all the tents set up are the finish and transition areas were gone as well as most of the course signage.  They also had to change all the run and bike courses because of downed trees.  Sure it was an exceptionally rare event, hence my use of "irrational".  Can't bear to think of my bike out in that though.

I've been really busy getting ready for a sprint at the end of July, then right into Olympic preparation after that. I've planned on doing the Orlando 70.3 in 2011, if all works as planned after my Olympic in October I'll take it easy for a little over a month then jump into 6 month HIM training... fingers crossed!

So I'll have 2 sprints, 2 Olympics and quite a few run races under my belt before my first HIM.

Question for the group concerning hydration.

I am in Texas and want to train in difficult conditions as I feel it will better prepare me for any difficult days I find myself in on the course in the future. Apparently, my body is not efficient at managing body temp and I sweat profusely (on a recent 7 mile run in the early morning, I was soaked like I just stepped out of the pool by the time I was done) and find myself loosing 3-4 pounds of water weight on my longer runs even thought I carry water and accelarade with me on my runs.  Or maybe it is efficient hence the reason I sweat so much. I dont know for sure and would like feedback/thoughts on that. But my main question is on longer runs especially, how do I maintain my fluids better. I hear people talk about salt tablets? Do these help retain water and if so, my concern then is if I dont sweat as much then my body temp may rise? Currently I am taking about 24ozs of water and 12ozs of accelarade with me plus a gue pack or 2 on runs from 7-10 miles in length.

I agree with you on training in difficult conditions... I'm in Florida and I do the same thing.

Check out these articles from active.com. I've read all of them and they offer some good advice.

Great resources. All I would add is try different things during training to see what works for you because everyone is different. My experience is that people will tend to over fuel during a race. A few weekends ago, I saw a guy in a half marathon with 10...yes 10...gel packets on his race belt. I just laughed to myself and went on with the race. I don't start to worry about nutrition until I get to a half iron distance. For an Olympic I will just use water and Gatorade (I may be moving away from Gatorade but that is another story).
