Extreme Veteran 405 Shakopee, MN | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full so how is everyone doing? If you look at my training, I was sick for awhile (wife is still sick and off of work for a week!) But now I am back on track. I feel so much better while working out. I actually rode my bike outside for the first time and it is all dirty now, gotta clean it. Funny thing about MN...ride my tri bike outside on Wednesday...go snowmobiling from my front door on Saturday! Crazy! |

Veteran 296 | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Back to some sort of schedule. Group ride planned for Saturday. Last weekend's highs were in the 40s, today is supposed to be near 80. Just wish I could be outside to enjoy it! Cheri, Mardi Gras was a lot of fun. Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras and enjoys a reputation for having a fairly family-friendly carnival season. There is a 5 K run on the Sunday before Mardi Gras in Mobile, on Joe Cain Day. You will have to put that on your race calendar next year.

Veteran 296 | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Great ride on Saturday. Good to be outside...only downside was the wind. But can't complain too much. The temps are much better and at least we aren't battling the mess the folks up north and out west are seeing! Cheri, how is the new bike?

Gina, I'm still trying to make friends with my new bike. It's very different than what I'm used to, and it's probably going to take a little while to be comfortable. But I've got it on the back of my car today and plan to ride after work. It's not going to defeat me! And the orange pearl is actually very nice, even though I didn't think I'd like it. But it's not a WAR EAGLE bike -- I'm a Va Tech Hokie, and our colors are maroon and orange. My friends said I need to get some maroon ribbons or streamers and make it an official Hokie bike! |

Awesome! Enoy your ride. These days are so nice.....just hate being indoors most of the time. Does the new Hokie bike have a name.....and what exactly is a Hokie? I've always wondered. |

Does the new Hokie bike have a name.....and what exactly is a Hokie? I've always wondered. The weather has been fabulous! Too bad we know that it won't last. We do get short changed on springtime weather. I haven't named the bike yet -- I guess we need to make friends first. Believe it or not, a Hokie isn't anything it all. It's just a made up name. I think the people who started my college were odd -- they chose maroon and orange as colors because no other school had them (and who would want them????), and they created the word "Hokie" for some unknown reason. But at least they no longer use the mascot they had when I went there -- we were the Fighting Gobblers (and the Hokies too, two names). They dropped the Fighting Gobblers, thank goodness. Doesn't that conjure up strange thoughts? I'm way off topic, sorry! I wanted to mention that I finally invested in a heart rate monitor. I've used it a couple of times on the bike and running. I've noticed something odd -- when I'm running hills my heart rate goes down, but when I'm biking on hills it goes up. Anyone else experience that? |

Master 2314 Gulf Shores, AL | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Manatee Express - 2007-02-01 5:00 PM Goals for February, what a novel idea. Okay I will take a shot. Focus on consistency and frequency. Swim - At least 10 masters classes and 20,000 yards. Bike - 200 miles for the month and get the long ride back up to 50 miles. Run - 50 miles and complete a Half Marathon. Either Pensacola Beach or Mardi Gras. Core - 4 days per week of core and to hold a plank for 1 minute by the end of the month! Accountability time - I didn't do as good as I had planned. Work and weather and dislike of the trainer all contributers. The Half Marathon also took more out of me than I would like. I did 6 swim sessions, 12,000 yards. 103.9 miles on the bike. Weather hurt here, but still a lame excuse Run was 62 miles so I overdelivered and I did race the half marathon and set a PR on a tough course. Core - Not sure how many days but I did 2 hours which is an improvement of 20 minutes over last month. I also can now do the plank 1 minute with no problem. This months goals Swim 15,000 yards, continue to work form but incorporate some speed. Reduce use of fins for drills. Bike 250 miles - 2 outside rides per week after daylight savings time and whatever else I need on the trainer. Run - Cut mileage back to 45 and do speed work at least once per week. Core Time up to 3.5 hours. 3 sets of 20 side planks by the end of the month. No scheduled races but if a 10 K pops up, I may go for a PR. How bout you guys? Ken |

Wife is sick so I had a real excuse. What the heck can I do to keep motivated on the trainer? I hate it...outside I can bike but the trainer gets BORING FAST! I try watching movies, tv, whatever. Still boring. Ryan, I feel your pain on the trainer and have a few thoughts. First, I am a little concerned that 1 hour and 47 minutes is a longer training ride than you should be doing. I may be off, but I think you have only been at the bike 2 months and you probably should focus more on frequency than distance. If you are riding long rides, then you need to be in a pretty easy gear. All that said, the trainer is still boring as all hell. I did 48 minutes tonite watching the deadliest catch and that was somewhat entertaining. The best way to pass time for me on the trainer is by doing drill work. This allows you to focus on specific parts of riding for short periods of time and this somehow passes time faster for me. Again, drills are good but you dont need to be doing really hard drills yet. The best way to train is time in the saddle but you muscles need time to adapt. The problem with the trainer is my mind muscles aren't good for that. Hope this helps, feel free to ask more details or correct wrong assumptions on my part. |

On the subject of trainers: does anyone has a unit that really feels flaming hot in the mechanical area after about 50 minutes or so? Or is that usual? I have a fluid trainer but it's a few years old (about a 2002 or 2003 model?) |

I will check the temp on mine next time i ride it. |

Veteran 153 Ft. Washington, MD | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Bike training question: What is a "good" cadence and gear ratio to work towards??? I am just getting back on my bike from last Fall. I've always wondered 'if I'm doing it right' in terms of my goals and my training routine for biking. Currently I have a road bike with a triple crank and 9 gear cassette. I usually ride (and train) with the front on the middle gear and the back at the smallest or second to smallest gear. I set my cadence between 68-75 max. I've had others say this is a hard ratio to push and I'll wear myself out, but no one offers an alternative. In addition, I've ridden up to 85 miles at this ratio. What's RIGHT or BEST, in general??? Thanx, |

Master 2314 Gulf Shores, AL | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Wendol, Most of the science says you should try to maintain a cadence of around 90. I struggle to stay that high but am usually around 85. Your cadence and the terrain should determine you gear. I rarely ever look to see what gear I am actually in. At 68 to 70 cadence you are probably pushing to hard a gear. Have you actually ridden 85 miles at one time at that ratio? I am going to find you an article on cadence. ken |

The cadence I do feels rather comfortable but I'm not improving much beyond that. I've been riding since 2004 and have not increased much in speed at all. So something must be wrong, but I don't know where to look for changes (not counting the need for weight loss). |

I try to keep my cadence between 80-85. Today was a little windy so it was probably more like 75-85. I don't think I am very gear savy, just trying to keep going at a somewhat regulated pace. Ken, I am interested in seeing something on this too. |

Member 46 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Manatee Express Group - Full Ok, this is a bit off topic but I have to ask some experts............ I can't seem to get a way from this idea that having music is great for your workouts. It makes you work harder so you get the best results. Now here's my problem. I've been doing my tri training with either nothing or TV/Music when I'm inside on the treadmill or fluid trainer. I agree that Music can really get your blood and pulse going especially if it's some pumped up music. However, since my training is all HRM based I'm not sure that'll get me to the results I'm interested in. Does this make sense? What do the rest of you do for music while exercising? Any other thoughts? I'd also be interested to know what's on your iPod???? |

But here is my personal experience caution: when you use music too much, it makes those times without it much tougher. When training for my first tri, I always ran with music. I struggle with running and music helped so much. But when I took off on the run in that first race, I had trouble "getting into a rhythm." Again, this was my experience but thought I would share those thoughts. What's on my iPod? Since it's a hand-me-down from my oldest child there is a wide range of music. I really like most of the playlist but some tunes I really wish would go away. |
