Keep up the good work. I'll post my race report later, but my first OWS tri. was both bad and good. First off, I started to fast and there was lake weeds, or grass that really freaked me out and I had a hard time after that. I had to hold on to two different kayaks during the first half of the race. I finally settled down and had a decent swim during the second half. My bike felt great, and I passed about 60-70 riders and got passed by none. The run was better by a minute over my last race, so I can see it comming around. Overall a good experience, I think being sick recently, and very little swimming in the past month hurt me. I will be spending alot more time in the water before my next race. |

I had the most horific swim ever, so my goal till my next race is to really concentrate on my swim. I need more days in the pool, and try to get out to the lake at least once a week. I need Lynn to help me with my swim. Her swim logs have been outstanding. Anybody else have any learning experiences, or goals for their next race or event? |

My goal is to do it once a week. Jamie gave me some great advice on bike training to help get my speed up. So I'm going to work on that too. My goal in the next race is to not panic in the swim, reduce my transition time, reduce my bike time by about 5 minutes and try to get my run down to 7.5 miles per minute. Although my season goal is to run an Oly in Sept. so I'm still work on building distance up. |

I have "The idiots guide to running"- How appropriate for me..hehe and I found a great triathlon training book. Other ones that I had were more focused on Olympic and Ironman distance but this has a great sprint training program! Hope you are all well and training hard. I will be back to take a better look at everyone's race report! I haven't forgotten |

I'm going to try and get a OWS in this afternoon, a long run on Sat. and a 4-5 hour ride on Sunday. Only bad thing is that it is raining right now, and supposed to get worse this afternoon and rain scheduled for this weekend too. We have had the wetest spring here in N. Texas in along time and it keeps messing up my training schedule. Hope everyone else has good weather. |

I'm going nuts sitting around, but I have to say I feel more rested & healthy than I have in weeks. Have signed up for a coached swim session with the Houston Tri Club this Sunday. I'm still looking for a magic bullet for my swimming.

I took some time off from running while at home with my family. It was great to take a break. Hopefully my calf is better by now. We'll find out tomorrow when I hit the roads again. |

I am retiring from marathons before I even begin. Yes, it has been a very tough decision, even emotional at times for me. After speaking with a great friend of mine that is an expert in exercise phys and medicine I decided that, considering the massive amounts of miles that I have put on my legs (generally 40-60 miles per week year round in my first 2 years of high school and 60-80 miles per week year round for the last 2 years in high school) along with the training load that marathons would require (I would be shooting for Boston Qualification, which means heavy work, rather than just finishing) and my injury history, I will be a dad in a wheel chair if I continue to ramp up the miles and go for the marys and ultras. So, I will be taking the next few weeks off from running for the most part in order to let the legs recover. I'm going to swim, bike, and hit the cardio machines to continue improving. I'm bummed about it, but at least I can still run. I'm going to focus on the 10k distance to see how fast I can get at it . |

I tried to train for my first marathon in 2000 and wound up in PT for 9 months. It killed me. It was three years before I could run a 5K, and they said I'd never do distance again. I cried when I finished my half marathon this January, because I couldn't believe I was actually able to make it that far again. I know marathons aren't an option for me, though, and it still makes me a little sad. I guess my point is that you're much smarter than I am! Thank goodness for triathlons, right? They give an outlet to those of us who want to go further in a balanced way. Cross training is good. Besides, it keeps you from getting one of those bizarre ultra-runner bodies with the atrophied upper body and scrawny legs. |

Remember to degrease the chain, cassette, rings, etc... as needed. Also, lubricate your chain every few rides. It makes a world of difference and will extend the life of your bike quite a bit! |

I don't think I've ever done that. Go to your friendly neighborhood bike shop and purchase some sort of degreaser. They generally run between $6-$10 for a bottle that will last quite a while. Use a toothbrush and pour some degreaser on the brush, then brush your cassettes. In addition, brush anything that spins with the chain. Take a sponge and pour some degreaser on it. Then, grip it around your chain, not too tightly, and then spin your chain backwards through the sponge. Rinse the sponge once and do it a second time. Take a hose and spray the degreaser off of the bike. You will be shocked how shiny your cassette is. After that, wait for it to dry. Lube all of the moving parts including your derailleurs and chain. Your bike will thank you, and you will notice quite an improvement in shifting. PS, you will want to do all of this outside. It can get pretty messy! |

The training it takes to do a marathon and qualify for Boston is complete hell on the body. Thats what I like so much about triathlons. I gave up running because my body couldn't handle the stresses of running 5-6 time a week. My shoes size went up a half size with each marathon I ran in the past as well. Now my body feels so much better just running 2-3 times a week, and getting in the pool makes the body feels better. |
