Panther - 2009-12-29 4:56 PM wow...I think I may be in the wrong place.

I just did a stint in Toronto with my wife for our 25th anniversary and accomplished a whopping 1.1km jog so far.  I got a new pair of Asics 3126 shoes, but I'm not even close to you guys....

hhrrrmmmm...  I may need to re-think this thing.  I'm so freakin' out of shape, it's retarded.

Nope, your in the right place, if it makes you feel better I have not been running since August!

You are in the right place.  It doesn't matter where you are compared to anyone else.  The key is getting moving and making that a new habit.

Yep, and with the New Year only a couple days away, it's the perfect time to get back into it.  That's my plan, anyway.  My training's been a little spotty the past couple months due to business trips, illness, and the holidays.  I myself have to get serious if I'm going to survive my HIM in June and NOT want to swear off tri's forever at the end of it.

You can jog 1.1kms.... I am jealous! I only started walk/running 4 weeks ago - no experience. This time next year we can both say we kicked ! Cool

I think everyone is doing great, most people are in winter hybernation!

Whatever your weakness at this time is just make sure you ease back into it, typically winter is to regain focus, strength train, plan race season, heal, and learn to improve,we are well on our ways to a great season, most importantly keep helping each other! Motivation is everything and keep inspiring!

Do you know what the course is like, some hills, all hills, big hills, mountains? If you feel 62 miles is way beyond your ability, break it down into manageable distances say every 10 or 15 miles stretch, eat and relax. If you feel good do not push it! You want to be comfortable for the whole 62 miles, not give out at mile 40 because you went too hard. Get some chamois creme, it goes on your skin folds on your bottom, trust me on this, most bike stores carry it! If your longest ride is under 50 miles you will thank me later, and FYI its better to get the packets if you can, you may want to use it several times. Any questions on stuff to bring or anything? Sounds like a blast, take the time to enjoy it!

Well I pulled the trigger on a bike today.  I got fitted at my LBS.  The guy measured me, put the numbers in the bikefitting.com system they use and spent an hour getting everything right. I almost road enough during the fitting to log the training Laughing

I ended up with a 2010 Giant Defy 1 road bike http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/model/defy.1/3882/37098/ and added aero bars.

If I'm still into this in two years, I'll buy a tri bike.  OK, maybe one year if my wife will let me :-)

That looks like a tough course.  It is very flat in Illinois.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do for hill training.  The hills we have are very short.

Ask around where some hills are, ask bike shops, bike clubs, there should be a place where people train for hills, someone should point you in the right direction.

Happy New Year everyone!  What are your training plans today?  I'm considering running a couple miles outside (the Y is closed today) but it's only 20 degrees here.  Brrr.

I headed out side for a easy walk, it was great to get out in the fresh air!  it is not too bad here right around 32F (0C), it has been snowing on and off so it is slippery.

It was nice getting fresh air.  I wore the right amount of clothing (maybe a little to much up top) so the 20 degree temp wasn't too big of an issue.  After my run the wife and I wnet to see the Geprge Clooney movie Up in the Air.  It was pretty good but a little slow (in my opinion).

I can relate to what your saying, guy's on my team routinely go for 70-85 mile rides and hammer, I start to struggle about 60 at the pace they set. By next year I hope that will change!

Swim Technique and Drills
I wanted to talk about Swim Technique and Drills today beacause Ill be racing tomorrow. These are techniques that helped my get to where I am now swimming, and discuss some drills I use and include videos.
Basic balance, streamlining, propulsion, recovery are all techniques of swimming that I have improved and continue to try to master.
Basic balance-this is trying to keep your body on the top of the water while not allowing your hips to sink causing you to slow, this is done by keeping your head down while breathing, engaging your core to keep a straight swim posture, develop the sensation of swimming downhill.
Drills-Vertical kicking, forces you to keep good posture while kicking to be efficient. When you master this add rotation.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKV7AjJqPO4

Streamlining-keeping your body narrow and flat, not allowing your body to snake, have a good rotation, keep feet close.
Drills-this guy is such a dork, but he knows his stuff and makes excellent points.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2n_AceCr-c

Propulsion-Using you hips during rotation will extend your arm further and allowing a better pull, bring your hand straight back all the way to your hip. Kick is also important, keep knees straight and kick from your hips. Kicking is important!
Drills-these are some pull drills with variations.
   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nRCfeJNJkg
this drill will work on your catch and rotation, its my favorite drill, and I do it with my head above water.
   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9vLoMKQrKU&feature=related
Kicking the TJ Fry way! Look at how streamline and how he uses a two beat kick, he's one of the fast swimmwrs on BT.
   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAkzF7fPWv4

Recovery- this is critical for distance swimming, a relaxed recovery will allow for a faster tempo and more endurance.
Drills-These will help you get your arm out of the water, eliminating resistance during recovery, allowing a relaxed arm.

My feet hurt.  I'm pretty sure I have plantar fasciitis.  I developed it training for a 1/2 mary last year.  Anyone else have this?  I found some stretches to do so we'll see how that goes.

I definitely had this same problem when I was walking 50-75 km per week, the stretching and new shoes saved me.  It does take a bit to heal though. Most everything I read was to stay off your feet for a while.  I focused on biking last summer and cut my walking back to 20km a week.

Now while I am starting to run, I am being very careful and anal about having good quality shoes.

PS. good idea to visit a doc to confirm that is really the problem
