fdaniele - 2009-12-28 3:36 PM Dear All,
I am thinking about getting some proper runnings shoes, and dont want to spend a ton, any advice? Thanks.
FFD

Take my advice with a grain of salt, but when it comes to being cheap I've usually got you covered.  I couldn't afford a "proper" pair, so I just spent almost two hours trying on running shoes at a local discount sporting goods store.  I mostly paid attention to whether they rolled my ankles in or out, (don't know the technical term), how my arches felt (I'm pretty flat footed) and etc.  I ended up with a $28 pr of New Balance.  Later I bought a more expensive pair of Nikes and they bugged me, so I'm back in them.   It works for now until I can get a better pair.

When it comes to a "proper' pair, I'm no help.  Sorry!

I have been doing some reading recently into the rolling of the ankels in and out. I purchased a pair of barefoot running style kicks and I think because I did not do enough research into the biomechanics of the shoes I caused myself an injury to my IT band. My answer is I did not give proper time to adapt to the new style of shoe. As for being proper terminology Runners Word has an excellant section on the Over, Under and Normal Pronation of your foot, this is the link: http://www.runnersworld.com/video/1,8052,s6-4-0-4,00.html?bcpid=2891005001&bclid=1716449631&bctid=16474217001
Go through all the videos after the usually commercial and it should provide a better perspcective on the issue.

Swimming-continue to have a problem with the swim part of my work outs-only place in area is the YMCA (I am a member) but it seems when ever I find the time to get over there--lanes are full or classes have taken over the pool.  Find plenty of time to run and bike but am missing out on a very important part of my training.  What does everyone else do in order to get in the training time in the water?

I swim at my local Y as well.  (or out in the big water when weather permits)   I don't seem to have trouble finding time when lanes are available.  How big is your pool?  early morning is usually the best time at our pool, but it is also often very empty during the middle of the day.  Busiest times are evening/night.

You can simulate a lot of swimming techniques on dry land as well.  I have used a versa-climber and other machines to train when i couldn't get in the pool due to a Plantar wart removal that went horribly wrong.

I am lucky that we have 2 pools at the gym.  They are crowded though.  In the big pool, we have masters MWF in the morning and the swim teams in the afternoons from 4:30 to 8:30pm.  The other pool has swim lessons and the aqua aerobics.  There are a couple of lanes open most times.  I have become friendly with the swim coach, so he usually keeps a lane open for me in the early afternoons.

MUST BE CRAZED!!  I hope that I am not the only one-please tell me it's not so!  Up at 4:20am this morning in order to get a good work out before taking off to work at 5:45am.  that way I can work all day and then get in another work out when I get out at 3pm before my wife and company arrives for dinner.  Is there something wrong here? Or am I normal like the rest of you?  Just curious  (plus, my thought is that I have a 5k on Thursday so with taking a day off before the race I need some extra time to put in some miles--going to be a lot of fun--we are expecting a snow storm  and 20 degree temps right around race time)

Same problem here too.  We have a local fitness facility but everytime I go, it is full or a class is going on where people come over into the pool as well.  I find the earlier I go the better.  I haven't been in the pool a while either.  Hoping to go today, hard to do with the kids out of school too.

x2.  You are motivated.  I am sure you will be able to find someone else who gets up earlier than you do.  We should all follow your lead.

AlanaF - 2009-12-28 1:46 PM Ok - I'm going to buy some new goggles.  Josh, have you researched it and know where a good deal is?

Also, Seren, how are your racing goggles any different?

I forget what brand the racing goggles are but they are just a  lower profile than the mask type.  I got the mask type a couple of years ago - before i was into tri'ing - for hotel pools.   Both of my goggles are tinted for swimming outside.

Thanx Josh.  The article was very enlightening.  Now I got to get myself into the pool!

I just registered for my A-Race in July.   The sprint distance is already sold out.   This will give me something to really focus on.

Thanks.  I changed internet providers and now my service is really slow, so I'm slowly working through the videos.  Six months ago I had never ran more than 1.5 miles in my life so I have lots to learn!  Are you going to continue trying to switch over to minimalist footwear?

How do all of you guys balance the three sports?  I am focusing on swimming right now since it was by far my worst, but I'm getting worse and worse at biking and running.   Part of that is the move indoors.

I find I can focus on improving 2 of the 3, but not all 3.  Since I'm a newbie to all of it, I need major improvement EVERYWHERE.  How do you guys deal with this?

I really like someone on BT's signature line:  Focusing on my weaker events: swimming, biking, and running.

Well to quote someone else, "If it was easy, everyone would do it."  If all you can do is focus on 2, then focus on 2.  Here's a bit of news that might not surprise you, most people are not good at all three in their first year.  Heck, I still stink at all three and I am starting my third year.  But you improve everyday, every week, every month, and every year.

I started out running 12 minutes miles, 13 mph on the bike, and 3 minute 100s in the pool in Feb 08.  At my peak last year I was at about 9:30 miles, 18mph on the bike, and about 1:50/100 for 1,000yds.  The only thing I did was follow the plan.  If you are doing something everyday, you will get better.  Don't get discouraged.  If you have some anxiety on in the pool, find a masters program or take a couple of lessons.  I do suggest finding the right shoe for running.  It does make a difference.

If in a couple of months you still feel like you are getting "worse," then you may want to speak with a coach and figure out if it's something physically you are doing wrong.

That makes me feel better.  I run 11-12 min miles and feel like there is no hope!  I finally got a free training plan off the site and I think that will help me focus and not feel like I should be doing them all everyday.

Good morning everyone.  I could let us fall to the second page.  I can't believe how many groups there are.  It's good to see.  It means many people want to change their lifestyles.  I found out yesterday that the folks running this site are extending mentor's memberships 2 months and are entering us into a raffle.   This is not the reason why I did it, but it's nice non the less.  I hope everyone has a good day.

OMG!  What is this ....pick on me week?!    And I hit the wall today.  Low calories, intense workouts - lack of focus today... it was bound to happen.   Getting the bodyfat measured next week then I will probably up those calories a little!  I hope everyone has a great day today.

Don't worry, we'll pick on you every week!

So for a completely newbie question.  How many yards is 1.2 miles and 2.4 miles?  Just curious.
Thanks!

OH I sooo can't wait for my life to get back to some sense of normalcy.  Missed two workouts already this week due to too much going on at work and Ifeel like I'm getting further and further behind in my marathon training.  13 weeks to go and my longest run so far is 10 miles since my HIM in September.  I vow that tomorrow will be better!  Now you all have to help hold me to that...LOL  The plan is to get a double workout in tomorrow.  A long run and strength training.  Here's to good intentions.  Cheers everyone!
