Brian-OH NO! I am on number 5 and I expect at least 3 more. I told them at the endo that if I did 9 there, they would have to give me one for free. They actually seemed to agree with me. Today was not as good as the last tooth, feel like I got smacked in the jaw. The dentist told me I have circus freak teeth...long roots and curved...hope you have nice straight, short roots! Be sure to take your music player and some earphones and ask for all the pillows they have and a bite block...after three hours I would have paid someone to hold my mouth open for me...

Oh, and if you saw me you wouldn't suspect my teeth were rotting right out of my head...I look like I brush and floss and everything.

Deb-can't you just go to Breckenridge and hang out while they ski? Coffee, window shopping, hot tub...you'll feel better in no time.

T-I have a feeling your Nan is going to love to brag about how her grandson rode his bike all the way to see her...good luck, sounds fun!

Tiesim - 2010-02-12 5:16 PM I have set a weekend challange for myself to cycle to see my nan who is in hospital in kent, some 95 miles away, so its an early start tomorrow, expecting 8-9 hours in the saddle and a well earned sleep at my dads tomorrow night, then seeing my nan sunday morning and Mrs T driving the car so i get it easy coming home. really excited about this, will let you all know how it goes sunday/monday.

Brian - question, i seem to be getting the vibe triathlons are bad for our teeth, can you shed any light on this ? lol !

Debs - have a fab weekend on the slopes !

Everyone else - I hope your loving the tri training as much as i am,

Have a fab weekend everyone !

T

Yes, triathlon is bad for your teeth!  Before I started 3-sport training my teeth were fine; now I seem to have ungodly dental bills.....

What I've learned, though, is that minor tooth aches and pains can really zap your energy for training.  I don't let these things linger anymore.  While I don't go to a doctor when my body has aches and pains, I call the dentist right away when it's my teeth!

Check out the last few days of Tiernans training log, where he describes an incredible 8+ hour bike ride to visit his "nan" in the hospital.  It was quite the adventure!

T-I would not run on Friday, and just go out for 15 minutes or so on Saturday for a tune up...

I also would either swim on Thurs or maybe knock the mileage down a bit...3 miles maybe.

Your legs must be tired from your epic ride!

G'luck, can't wait to hear how the 1/2 goes...

I agree with Quincy.  Don't run on Friday.  I wouldn't overdo it on Thursday either - 3 miles (walk).

Good luck.  Keep up the great work.

Tiernan, +1 on what Quincy and Deb said.  If you ended up running today (Thursday), no reason to run on Friday, and maybe just an easy jog on Saturday to keep your legs and mind fresh.  If you didn't run today, just do a short run on Friday and rest Saturday.  You won't be gaining any fitness from now until Sunday, so resting your legs is key.

We'll be expecting a race report by Monday!

Pete mitchell is also doing a half marathon on Sunday.  He doesn't write on this thread often, but you might remember him as the guy who has a $2,000 bet that he can finish a half Ironman by summer.  The half marathon is a step on the way to winning that bet.  Give him some enouragement!

Good luck to Tiernan and Pete!

Getting a bit inspired by Tiernan and Pete, at 6 pm tonight I registered for my first race of the season (registration closed at 6 pm so this was kind of a last second thing).  The race is a duathlon tomorrow morning!  I've been contemplating this race for some time now but avoided signing up for all kinds of reasons (uncertain about weather, don't want to spend $, not trained well enough, etc.).  The real reason, though, is that duathlons are really hard so I tend to avoid them!

Look for a race report this weekend!

Wow, Brian.  That's really cool.  Why do you think that dualthlons are harder? There are only two events instead of 3.  So, how did you do today?

Duathlons seem tougher to me since I tend to die on the second run (most are run/bike/run).  In a triathlon you stress your legs on only two segments of the race, but in a duathlon all three..... And you're competing against some people who don't swim much or at all, so they only focus on the bike and run and are fast!  I tend to be more competitive in triathlons than duathlons.

My race actually went quite well.  I ran better than I expected, especially on the 2nd run.  In fact, I ran the second 5k at the same pace as the first 5k which is something I didn't expect!  I'm starting to like duathlons a bit more.

I was happy with the race!  2nd of 10 in my AG, and 14th of 81 overall.  More importantly, I raced at about my potential given my current fitness, so I'm quite pleased.   I learned that my run fitness is good.  So my plan from now through May is to maintain that run fitness and try to get my bike and swim fitness to a similar level.

Hey all

Finished my 1st ever half marathon on sunday 1hr 49 mins 5 seconds, was happy with this as my target was under 2 hrs. And half the course was X country. Anyway i have uploaded a pic of me finishing, you can tell i am not amused, i hit the wall at 8 miles i think and struggled through with this look of frustration on my face !

I am now talking about the idea of running the cycle i did 2 weeks ago, it was 92 miles, so this is going to be quite somthing if i do it. Trying to talk Mrs T into cyclying with me while i run, this is going to take some persuasion! (this will not happen until earliest late summer), I love a challange !

You're a crazy man!!  I figured that ride would discourage you from going that long again.  But it only made you want to do it again, but running it??!!

I have a university buddy who became an ultra runner.  I don't claim to understand him either....

Wow, that is an amazing idea. I could see going longer and longer...it gets addictive to see how long you can go...wait a minute, keep your crazy ultra ideas to yourself, I don't need any more wacky plans, triathlon is quite enough right now.

Well February came and went faster than I had hoped.  My training started off great, but then I hurt my calf and the company I work for got sold, so training went downhill from there.

Swimming:
I have not been to the pool in 3 weeks, so I'm hoping to get back there soon.

Running:
My half-marathon is in 2 weeks.  I'm hoping to still be able to get in 3-4 runs a week after the race.

Biking:
I spent a lot more time on the trainer when I hurt my calf (only hurt when I was pushing off).  Hoping to get outside and do some longer rides in March.  Installed some clip-on aerobars on my bike, so it will be interesting riding with them.

It's about time I start to actually work on a training plan to get ready for my first sprint, once I'm done with the half-marathon.  I  know for sure that I need to put in much more time in the pool.

I knew February would be a tough month, but this was bad!  My goal was to increase my bike mileage and increase my swim frequency.  Neither happened.  I got to about half my bike goal (which maybe was too aggressive) and I didn't get in any 3-swim weeks...   Between work commitments, minor sickness, and unusually cold weather both suffered.  I did maintain my run program pretty much to the T, so I'm at least happy with that, and a surprisingly good result at my first race (duathlon) of the year.

And I finally signed up for my first triathlon of the year, on April 11.

My goals for March are the same as my goals for Feb -- increase bike mileage and increase swim frequency!

Missed a few days from work sick (school nurses do get sick too) and kids home sick so lost the momentum. spent time on-line shopping for some bike upgrades. Husband got  the bug to get his bike upgraded as well. I had a crack in bike helmut needed replacement and talked my husband into getting clipless pedals. My next triathlon club meeting is going to have some pro bike mechanic go over basic maintenance so he might attend as long as he does not have to wear spandex. I planned to start swimming before I got sick so hope to start this week. I keep aggravating a running injury even wearing orthotics so I need to find some coaching on my running mechanics. the chi running video will be coming soon, hope that helps. February was rough!  Was sick for two weeks, and had to travel for a few days at the end of the month.  I was able to increase my swimming.  Now go Tues, Thurs and Sat.  I took my bike in to have the new wheels and tires put on.  Love to ride it now.  Trouble is, the weather hasn't been cooperating on the weekends.  It was in the 50's during the week, and then snow on the weekends.  Ugh!

Signed up for my first Tri on April 18th.   The swim is in the pool, and I have already requested to be placed in the last wave.  Called a swim coach this week, and was referred to a gal that trains triathletes.  Haven't heard back from her, so will make it a priority to call back again today to find out what is going on.

Getting excited for the coming weeks ahead.

Chris has a half marathon coming up on March 14, and Tiernan is signed up for a 10k on March 28.  Give them some encouragement!

tiesim - Tiernan
croyston - Chris

I might do another duathlon on the 14th, though I may skip it so I can get in a long ride instead.  I'm way behind on my riding goals....

Anyone else have an event coming up this month?  For those of you with triathlons or other events in April, are you feeling like you're prepared??

My first sprint is April 11.  It's a 400m pool swim, a 12 mile bike ride, and a 2 mile run.  I was feeling pretty good about it since I can do all the distances easily.  The tri is very near my house so I've ridden most of the bike route and taken a look at the run route and I figure out why the distances are short; there are a lot of hills.  That makes me a little more worried.  The bike route is smaller rolling hills, so I'm not so worried about that but the run is pretty much uphill the first mile and then downhill the second.  I hope my legs are going to be okay by then.

Overall, I'm feeling pretty good.  I'd like to build more distance on my swim before then.  I'm going to be building my base till then. Hopefully, it'll bring my time down (did 400m in 9:30 a week or so ago).

P.S. Weight loss is going good too.  Would like to drop about 10-12 more lbs before  then.  Probably easier to go up and down hills carrying less weight.

Has anyone heard of Rick Kattouf http://www.teamkattouf.com/?
A friend of mine from high school (a fellow triathlete) recommended his videos and books.  Waiting patiently for my order in the mail <sigh>

Meeting a swim coach on Sunday to help with training.  Also hired a personal trainer once a week to work on a miriad of stuff - mostly sprints.  She also hosts a boot camp every spring that I attend.  Those start the week before my tri.  Getting excited.  39 days to go.

If you haven't seen the article on this website on barefoot running - check it out here:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1970
The doctor that wrote it is the next town over (about 10 minutes).

Well I survived my half-marathon.  My goal was to run a 10 min/mile pace, and that's what I ended up with.  Legs got tired after 9 or so miles, so did some walk / run combo for the last 4 miles.  I'm pretty happy with the results given my 10 days of during the middle of the training with my calf strain.

Looking forward to getting back on the bike and back into the pool.
