Last week saturday.  Our club had a practice transition clinic.  The presenter mention that he'll bike & run without sox for a sprint & oly distance event.  I have a triathlon (sprint distance) this coming saturday.  I plan to bike without sox, but for the run I'm unsure.  I looked over last year result and notice the avg. time at T2 was about a minutes.  Have you guys run without sox at this  distance?  How much time, am I saving not wearing sox? Do you do anything with the shoe to prevent blisters?

I've tried to run without socks and didn't work very well for me. As far as biking goes I don't think you would have any issues as long as your shoes were sized properly.

I'd wear socks for my run. I also would "roll them down" and leave them in my shoes it's only a few seconds but the comfort would be worth it. We are talking seconds here.

Also I wouldn't try many "new" things during a race. If you haven't been running without socks on a regualr basis I wouldn't do it during a race.

PS From your logs it looks like you've been putting in some time recently! You should do well good luck!

I agree with Adam in that if you haven't trained that way, I wouldn't try it for the first time on race day.

It certainly would save a little time in transition, but I personally like wearing them and it is worth the extra time to me (I have never had a race where 30-60 seconds would have meant a change in placement).  I also find that putting shoes onto wet or sweaty feet is difficult.  If you are going to wear them for the run, you might consider putting them on in T1 and just biking with them, too.  One thing that I do to save a little time is to put them on before the race and roll them off and put them in my bike shoes.  That way, when I go to put them on in transitiion, they roll right onto my foot.  Whatever you decide to do, good luck this weekend!!

So, not really a question but i guess an observation. Since injuring my hamstring and the resulting time off, it is very hard to get started again. I have my first race coming up next weekend, but just feel lethargic and flat lazy! the weather went from upper 70's with nice SW winds to lower 60's and 50's with north winds. I guess i am using excuses, so time to get off my lazy butt!

Any and all scoldings, reprimands, etc are welcome, and thanks for listening!

The weather is making it tough to do anything, so I can understand the not wanting to get back at it, but only you can make that decision.  How is the hamstring feeling?

The weather will change, just give it a few minutes.  You know if Nebraska didn't suck so much, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri wouldn't be so windy.  :-)  Does that help at all?????

getting started is always the hardest part. I find the 1st 2 days of getting back into the swing of things is the most difficult to overcome mentally. Then by the 3rd day I'm good to go. Just keep telling yourself that this is supposed to be fun!!! Sorry to hear about your hamstring. I've injured my hamstring in the past and that is really painful.

HAHAHAHA,  cant wait to tell my uncle that, that really made my day. The hamstring is much better, my chiropractor did some ATR treatments along with some cold laser and stimulation. Both of you are right, it is hard to get going again, thanks for the encouragement and I will let you all know how the race goes next weekend.

Speaking of weather I've noticed when I'm training I'm more in tune with the weather. I check the forecast all the time and adjust the best I can.

I did feel the temperature change the other day. Last week we were in the high 60's to low 70's this week we drop to the mid 50's. I was in heaven last week this week.

2 piece vs. 1 piece tri-suits:

It seems like 1 piece suits were the norm but recently it seems like 2 piece suits are more popular. I can see the advantage of a 2 piece suit on longer races (easy bathroom trips) but I've heard people say they prefer 1 piece suits because they are more comfortable especially if you don't have a perfect tri-body.

I didn't have a tri-suit last year and while it was not much of a problem I did have some chaffing in some rather sensitive areas. I would like to avoid that this year Embarassed

I have worn both and definitely prefer the one piece.  If I take it off my shoulders, using the restroom isn't a problem.  I find the one piece much more comfortable.  The two piece set up tends to separate on me and I am constantly having to pull up the shorts or pull down the shirt.  Just my experience - others may have different input on their preferences...

The one thing I don't want to happen is to have to keep pulling my shirt down on the bike or run. Seems like a 1 piece would be more stremlined during the swim.

I have some DeSoto tri shorts as well as a one piece suit.  I like their products ($81 for a suit is a good deal) and they have a reputation of having great customer service (I've never had to return anything, so I can't speak to that).  In fact, Emilio DeSoto posts on BT occasionally with tips and advice.  Hope you like the suit!!

I hope everyone had a great event that was in one this weekend and hope to read some reports.  I have one more week of my youngest daughter's graduation, and then I can start doing some more serious trianing.  We are running everywhere and working on the house, yard, garage, etc......

Have a great swim, bike  or run workout today, unless it is a race or recovery day for you.

I have an "iffy" question to ask, and if it needs to be removed, please let me know.

I started running more lately and this has always been a problem for me, so probably one of the reasons I have never been much of a running person.  About .75 mile to one mile into my runs I feel like I need to have a bowel movement.  I have tried going before I run and can't.  It doesn't matter if it is a morning run or an evening run.  It doesn't matter if I have had a bowel movement 2 hours prior.  I am afraid to go on longer run than a 5k because of this.

Is this common until I build up mileage?

I walk/run up and down the stairs of my house a couple times in the am. I am what you would call a slow starter in the AM, so this problem has haunted me in my training at times.

First, this is not an 'iffy' question.  It is VERY common among runners to have digestive issues and timing complications.   There are a couple of things you might try.  One is playing around with when and what you eat in relation to when you run.  Some people find that a cup of coffee in the morning helps to get things moving and allows them to go before they leave as well.  Some people take an immodium prior to leaving to avoid getting stranded ina situation where there are no facilities available.  Others plan their routes around being near a place to stop in case they need to? ??(?r?u?n? ?p?a?s?t? ?g?r?o?c?e?r?y? ?s?t?o?r?e?s?,? ?g?a?s? ?s?t?a?t?i?o?n?s?,? ??p?a?r?k?s?,? e?t?c??????..  If the trend is ?t?h?a?t? ?t?h?i?s? ?h?a?p?p?e?n?s? dependably within 3/4 mile to a mile into your run, you might do a warmup of a 1/3 to 1/2 mile out and back, so you'll be at the house when it ?comes over you - ?y?o?u? ?c?a?n? take care of things and go back out.  Just a few ideas - maybe others will chime in? ?w?i?t?h? ?o?t?h?e?r??s?.? ?? ?
