Hope everyone's training is going well.   It is getting close to be able to be out on the course here in Madison. I have been inside riding my Computrainer getting ready for IMCDA first then will focus on IMOOO.

First week of official training!  I'm still training for a CC ski race that's next weekend so I'm skipping the first 2 weeks of Fink's intermediate plan - but then it's back to the training-for-an-ironman way of life!!

Let the fun begin!

Which race? CC skiing is my favorite sport, but now live in the south and rarely have a chance to partake.

Good luck!

Question for you guys,  I'm doing the Kansas HIM on June 10th and IMWI on Sep 9th.  I've started doing the BT HIM training plan for the HIM, but I'm wondering if I should switch over to the 20 week IM plan and just taper a little for the HIM or if I should stick with my HIM plan all the way through to the race and then switch over to the IM plan after the race. If I did that I would do the last 13 weeks of the 20 week Intermediate IM plan

I also noticed that there's a 12 week HIM to IM bridge plan that looks interesting.

This is my first go around at an IM and it's obviously my A race for the year.  The HIM is kind of a warm up, so I don't necessarily want to peak for that race.

What do you guys think?

I think because IM is your "A," race, you should probably do the IM training plan plus a very small taper, it would be nice if the HIM fell at the end of a recovery week but that is about a 1/4 shot. I'm doing door couny in July and and using an IM plan and am planning on doing a very small taper before the race.

^^ this is more or less what I would suggest too.  Have you registered for the HIM yet?  The timing would be better if you could find one in July instead.   For me, following the plan I follow, I wouldn't be ready for a HIM in june, but it fits perfectly in the middle of July (I'm doing Door too)...  Just a thought...

Good Luck!!

I am using Fink Intermediate 30 week Plan and Racine 70.3 falls exactly on the weekend he calls for HIM (July 15 /Week 22).  He doesn't really call for a taper but he does do an easy Thursday swim, takes out Friday swim and easy 15 min bike/20 min run Saturday.

I have the whole plan in a spread sheet that can be uploaded to BT training log if you would like it (just message me).  I am just starting week 2 this week o you would still have time.

I'm doing door as well...It is now sold out though so pry won't be an option. Racine is also in July and could be an option.

A wise word to everyone racing HIM's in prep for Wisconsin this year. I just discussed this with my coach and if you are racing a very hot HIM in July, take a couple extra days of recovery. Racine is usually hot so this is a thought for some. It is okay to dictate away from your plan a couple days to get more recovery in. Because of this I am dropping my Rev 3 race in August and doing Chisago instead. Rev 3 is too close to risk a hot race and have to recover extra from it.

Just saw this email today about volunteers:

Hello all,

Hope everyone has been enjoying this mild winter we have been having.

Just want to let you know that the volunteer site will open in April. I will update you when I get a more exact date.

On behalf of the Bike Handler Captains, Roger and Peggy Frings, Jackie Wealti and myself, thanks again for the great effort everyone put in at last year's IMWI - you make our job easy!  Good luck to all those that will be competing this year, your bikes will be in good hands!!

Hope to see many of you back this year.

Chris Sachs

I volunteered last year.  Just a word of caution to potential volunteers -- the web sign-up was a MESS last year.  Sign up early, sign up often, and after you sign up, check back frequently that you really are signed up.  In the end, there will be no problem about being a volunteer, but if you have specific things you'd prefer to do and specific times, and especially if they are popular, you need to be sure that you are really on top of this, even if you think you are on the list...

I did Bike check-in, T1, and finish line catcher last year, and those were fun jobs that I would recommend.  I enjoyed helping nervous first-timers at check-in.  I learned some things from watching pros in T1.  And I loved helping people enjoy their finish experience (or, in a few cases, survive their finish experience...) as a catcher.  But don't do the last of the three if you are squeamish about sweat, nasty old sunscreen, and other bodily effluvia.

So it sounds like February was the start of real training for a lot of people round here.  How is training going?  Starting to build up time or distance?  The start of February I was on vacation, so the month started off slow, but fininshed strong.  My totals are:

Bike:17h 23m
Run:9h 15m 44s  - 87.51 KM
Swim:6h 00m  - 12350 M
Strength:1h 00m

I have two longer bikes a week - one 1.5 hours one 2.0 hours and my long runs are up to 20 km.  My coach wants to increase my runs until I break and then go into maintenance mode.  Bikes will stay at 2 hours until I can get outside - likely another month.

My February was starting to build a little, but not too impressively....

February's totals:
Bike:    8h 22m 44s  - 134.86 Mi
Run:    7h 11m 51s  - 46.13 Mi
Swim:    4h 12m 55s  - 11900 Yd
Strength:    15m

On an unrelated, but IM-related note, I am curious about wetsuits at IMWI.  I already own a full suit and am thinking about buying a sleeveless.  If nothing else, I found many of my summer OWS's I was a bit warm in the full suit and having a sleeveless would offer me some options.  I am wondering if people find themselves too warm in their fulls suits in Lake Monona during IMWI?

tuwood - thank for making me feel not too bad about my February totals compared to daffodil and sbsmann -haha.  My plan started February 14 and I was fighting a darn cold from Mid January until last week unit l I begged my doc for antibiotics - two days later feel great and getting back in the swing of things finally.

Bike:5h 30m 06s  - 97.13 Mi
Run:5h 43m 30s  - 31.49 Mi
Swim:4h 54m 15s  - 13000 Yd
Strength:1h 10m

Well if y'all are worried about feeling left behind from February, here's my totals.  I sure hope no one has even less than me!

Bike:3h 56m 25s  - 56.13 Mi
Run:1h 28m 30s  - 7.68 Mi
Swim:3h 39m  - 11000 Yd
Crossfit:13h 10m

I'm still struggling to have the "oomph" to get thru both a crossfit and tri workout in a day.  But for the moment, the CF training has a much more profound impact on my quality of daily life than any tri-training, so I'll take that skew.  But if my s/b/r numbers don't start to climb pretty quickly here I may have to re-evaluate.

Are you all biking outside? My indoor trainer doesn't give me mileage so I am not thinking I need a different piece of equipment

Bike: 7hrs 25 min
Run: 78.85 mls
Swim:8075 yards 3.25 hrs
Strength: 2hrs 25 min
As far as the wetsuit I volunteered in T1and people were coming out of the water pretty cold I am not sure what the water temp was that day but almost everyone had full suits

February's totals for me:

Swim:  18000.00 Yd - 7h 30m
Bike:  15.00 Mi - 8h 00m ( I rode outside once!
Run:  47.78 Mi - 8h 14m
Strength:  4h 25m
Sports:  5h 30m

I thought I was a little behind, but I like that I see everyone else's totals not too far off. How is everyone else doing on strength training? It seems to be the first thing  I cut if I'm running short on time. I know I shouldn't though.

I can't wait to get outside! Winter is getting to be a little too long, especially with the recent snowstorms we had.

I just use my Garmin 405 with the cadence/speed sensor to give me my mileage.  It seem somewhat accurate or at least enough to give me an idea - looks like it calculates my HR with cadence and speed to get a mileage estimate.

I actually just started again last week since I figured it would help me in the long run.  I am doing the Fink plan so I just decided to use his lifting routine from the book.  Just trying to add it on my run on Friday's and then after a swim during the week.  Not sure how I will keep it up once the Build/Peak phases start but gonna try and do it for as long as possible.  I have heard and can totally understand how that is the first thing to get dropped when training really picks up.

One of my requirements ever since the invention of the bike computer (yes, I'm old) is that it has a rear wheel sensor, that way it works on my trainer.  Or if you have a Garmin, as tmoran80 said, the speed/cadence sensor is well worth the $35.

Strength training doesn't need to be long.  Most CrossFit workouts fall in the 8-15 minute range, and CrossFitters as a whole are some of the strongest people around.

Wassup folks!  Great to see everyone is starting to train.  I'm done with my strength training program and am wrapping up the Critical Power program on the bike.  Started running 2 weeks ago, and just finished my first week in the pool.  Here's what I got for the last 5 weeks (so I guess this would include a few days from January and few days from March):

Swim: 1:57

Bike: 21:25

Run: 5:14

Strength: 4:15

Yoga/Stretching: 2:36

Happy training everyone!

Trainer and Spin Class for me until the weather improves.  My bike has the speed/cadence sensor on the rear wheel so I get speed/distance on the trainer and I just guestimate the miles in spin class based on time.
