(indoor on the bike). Outdoors it's 1:10, so that’s 20 mins. slower. My first tri in May is this length, plus my legs will fall off if I go any farther. I think Noob is right, the “obstacles” outdoors can slow me down as I am still getting comfortable riding around cars and in the wind. But the route is really flat and not heavily traveled. I am using a mountain bike, but I’ve heard it doesn’t make much difference for a beginner. On the indoor bike I can go steady the whole time, but outdoors I get slower at the end. I just got my first road bike for Christmas, and haven't done any tri's yet so my input is only a first impression but the bike simply FLYS compared to a mountain bike If money is a limiting factor, hit up craigslist! OR if you can't find any good deals, at least switch your tires to a skinnier slick tire. I did some bike commuting during college on a mountain bike, and just switching to slicks help out a lot on efficiency. Good luck Aaron, fantastic point about switching out the knobby tires for slicks. Jen, also go to your local bike shop and tell them you're doing tri's on the MTB- they might be able to get you a better cassette for the rear wheel which will make your gearing a bit tighter. Most importantly- don't spend a ton of $ making modifications to your MTB. Save that cash and put it towards a roadie |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Has everyone started to utilize their training logs? I think if there's only one thing you use BT for, the training log feature is the most useful. If you continue on in the sport after your first races, you're going to want to look back at your progression and see what worked for you and what didn't. Ron & Co. put EVERY detail you could possibly need in them, too. Let me know if anyone needs help getting started logging. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anyone else sick or feeling ill? There's been a lot of crap going around where I live and to be honest I haven't had a regular training week since the week before Christmas. It started in my sinuses, moved down to my chest by Christmas and since New Year's I've just felt like crap. I'm tired, coughing, sneezing, etc. For whatever reason I've decided that tomorrow is the day that I get back to working out on a regular schedule no matter what. I'll take a leisurely 3 to 4 mile run and bake the snot out of my nose if I have to. Just so frustrating feeling sick. /rant |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi All!
Quick question - new LA Fitness, new machines. Do you think it is just calibration that makes me go 1/2 the distance in the same time as on an older stationary cycle? What a bummer!! |

My friends and their families have had a lot of stomach flu issues, but it's been clear sailing thus far for us. Training with a cold is probably fine, and might even get you healthy in the head again. I'm happily willing to admit I'm kind of a sissy when I get sick- I have no problem laying on the couch instead of training. |

Melinda- are you talking a spinner or a LifeCycle type of stationary bike? If you're changing models you're comparing apples and oranges. Same type of machine, the new one probably needs to be broken in :D |

Try writing down the workout on an index card and keep it in a plastic zip-top baggie and keep it at the end of the lane. I keep it there with my water bottle and move it along the tiles to count my intervals. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jen, I believe you have to be a performance member to upload data to your logs. There are various options/prices. On the bike front, a MTB is just heavier by defintion. I have a cheapo road bike and a $$ MTB bike. The cheapo is just plain faster. Funny, I was asking my wife about a Tri-bike last night and she shot me straight down like one of the kids asking for candy. So, unless we win the lottery, my sprint in early summer will be on the cheapo which will be fine for a 14mile haul. |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() what is 'WU', 'CD', 'MS' ? and does descend mean go from 90% down? wow, I agree, this is like an algebra quiz! and I'm NO mathematician!! But I understand the need to use acronyms and have a universal language LOL!! ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wendy- here's a swimming acronym lesson: WU is warm up MS is main set CD is cool down Cruise means keeping the same intervals. Descend means get faster each set. |

But I understand the need to use acronyms and have a universal language LOL!! ![]() I read that to be WU=warm up, MS=main set, and CD=cool down. I was able to get a short run in yesterday, followed by some shoulder, back, chest and ab work - about 45 minutes worth. My legs felt really heavy during the run and I couldn't shake it...maybe I didn't run far/long enough to settle into a it. I got home and my son and I put on a Spinervals DVD. It was a long one - about 1:45 if I'm not mistaken. My husband was getting dinner ready, so we only had 55 minutes. We did the first 45 minutes of the video and then spent the last 10 minutes cooling down. It was tough! Will try to get to the gym this afternoon after work!

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm in the throes of a stretch of long hospital shifts this week and am only managing to find time to work, eat, sleep, go to bed, and get up to do it again. Thankfully, things quiet down for me for a few days after tonight's shift and I'm looking forward to getting some training in on Fri/Sat/Sun (to include a Tri 101 clinic on Saturday morning). Really need to figure out how to squeeze training in on work days as well! Really enjoy having this group to connect with---I'm learning so much from all of you already! I'm on Facebook if anyone also likes to keep in touch that way: Robin Cody White Take Care, Robin |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone for all of the great bike suggestions! Thinking back I believe I was being told not to rush out and buy a bike if I didn't have the cash, that it was better to use the mtn bike and see if I liked tri's or not first. But I will probably try to find a good deal on a used bike or even a rental. I'm sure it will help! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wonder if I'm trying to do too much too soon. I have done something every day this week and on a few days, I've done 2 workouts in a single day (my logs are up to date). I have also been working on what I eat and my portion sizes. I wonder if I'm not getting enough calories... Today I went to the gym after work and found an available treadmill (the weather is fine for running outside but by the time I get off of work it's already getting dark and I just don't trust the drivers around here hence the reason I use a treadmill). I just wasn't feeling it and my legs felt heavy and tired. I eeked out a little over 2.5 miles with the intention of hitting the bike/trainer once I got home. Of course dinner was being put on the table when I arrived home, and I knew I wasn't going to ride after I ate, so I sacrificed the bike tonight. I'm going to try and do a group ride on Saturday so we'll see how that goes. Plan for tomorrow is another run followed by some weights (which I did yesterday in addition to running and and a 45 minute bike video). Saturday I'll do the group ride and maybe another run followed by a rest day on Sunday. Does this sound like too much for a newbie? |

We are all still getting to know each other and each other's fitness levels and limits, BUT I feel like you may be overtraining. My feeling is that 2 a days should be one maybe two days a week for a beginner. Also, remember that weight training is considered a workout, ie run+weights=2; run+weights+bike=3! It's easy to be overzealous but pacing is important. Trust me, I'm still nursing Achilles tendonitis from running too hard and too long to quickly. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Gator - that's what I needed to hear. I guess my problem is that I am so excited that I don't want to loose the motivation, HOWEVER, I also know that getting hurt will not only slow me down, but stop me in my tracks completely until I heal up. I'll make it a point to settle down some to avoid injury. Thanks again! |
