![]() ![]() | ![]() Last week was good. Totally in love with biking now. Learned a valuable lesson, though. Helps to check the weather radar before embarking on an hour long ride. Five minutes in we were staring down a huge black wall of storms coming towards us, had to abort the mission and head back. Oops. Hope to tool around my neighborhood for the first time this weekend. So far only rode at my in laws and my parents towns. Let's see what Queens has to offer. :-) Goal for this week, two runs (always a chore, but one down already) and to do a loop around Willow Lake near my apartment. Aquathlon in just over two weeks, gotta get the running in, lest I embarrass myself. :-) Have a good week, everyone! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's been quiet this week--glad to see what some of you are up to again! I had a good week. Ran twice, including a 10 miler in the hills. Also had a couple good rides. Rode up a hill I haven't done since last August. It almost killed me then. Seriously, I was about to fake a flat tire and call my husband. This week, it wasn't bad at all! Clearly, the hill must have shrunk! I also took a couple swim lessons from a college swimmer home for the summer, and I think it's going to make a big difference. My swim workouts have been 100% drills and technique practice. I'm thinking maybe I should continue like this for a month or so, to try and cement the changes I'm making to my stroke? Jaime |

I found out on Thursday that I have a stress fracture of my left heel and I can't run. Not sure about biking, either. This is extremely crappy, as Boise 70.3 is NEXT WEEK. And my September marathon will become a half marathon, if that. I'm not extremly upset, as this isn't my first half and I was just doing it for fun. I'm just irritated that I get to spend the summer in a boot and then I get to re-build my leg from ground zero. LAME. So, the lesson here: if something hurts, RICE and be good to your injury. If after ~10 days there's little to no improvement, go see a doctor. I thought I had some sort of tendonitis and needed better drugs. Turns out I have a crazy high pain tolerance and probably did my half marathon while my foot was broken, then limped around on it for ~10 days before I sucked it up and saw the doctor. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Erin, that is awful!!! You have a great attitude. You know, from my newfound love of cycling I think I have acquired some right hip bursitis. Well, because my husband is going out of town again this week, I was still going to ride today, then swim tomorrow and run Tuesday, figuring I could rest after that. Well, a stomach bug that hit me at 2am last night has stopped that probably dumb idea right in it's tracks. Now after reading your story I am more accepting that some forced rest is probably the best medicine. Hang in there, Erin. Keep up with that positive attitude. Can you still swim at least? |

The first time it was my 5th metatarsal, right before my first ever half marathon... in Disney World. I had a really hard time scratching that race. This time I'm a bit older and a little wiser. And I know that if I make my heel fracture worse, I'm fubared. Heels are not something to mess with. It also helps that I've done this race before and this year was just for fun. Sure, I was set up to PR and that's a major bummer. I was also hoping I'd paid my dues for bad luck in the past year and was up for some good luck. In the past year, we've had both grandparents die, my father in law get really sick, move into hospice, and die, both of my 16 yr old cats died two weeks apart, and my mom had cancer surgery. I was due for good luck! Seems like the universe is thinking otherwise and I just need to be a bit more patient. I was able to find a runner. A couple had registered but the husband had shoulder surgery and can't swim anymore. He was going to DNS, but now we're going to combine forces and do a relay. I did a 25 mi test ride this morning and the foot felt good, so I'm going to go for it! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I am afraid I have done something quite foolish. I realized a few days ago that there is a "triathlon series" here this summer. You have to do 4 out of 6 of these races to qualify for prizes (gift certificates). Hey, I am already signed up for 3 of the races. I checked, and last year there was only woman in my age group who did enough races, so she won first place. Hmmmm.... So I check the schedule. Alas, 2 of the races are on the same weekend, and I have to work. And the only other option is next Saturday. Which happens to be the day before a trail half marathon I am signed up to do with my running buddy who is flying in from out of state to do with me. Hmmmm... So I email my buddy and explain the situation. I ask her how she would feel about her sleeping in for a morning while I zip to the other side of the state for a tri. And SHE says, how about we both do it, and then do the half marathon on Sunday? She's crazy like that. And also, she's never done a triathlon. So I have rented her a bike, and a wetsuit, and she will be here Friday so we will have Crash Triathlon Training Camp (perhaps Crash is not a good name for the camp). I figure I will get her out on the bike a bit and then take her to a lake to try some swimming, show her how to get in and out of the wetsuit. Practice a few transitions and explain no drafting. Any other thoughts on what we should cover in our one day of training? |

My office moved buildings and I was one of the move coordinators... so, between working crazy amounts of hours leading up to, during and the week after the move and then getting sick from being run-down (and still not being back to 100%), my "training" has been nearly non-existent. And I'm just over a week until my very first triathlon... ack! Anyways... I'm trying not to stress too much (which is quite difficult, as that is my nature) but a triathlete friend of mine told me that even if I walk the entire run portion of the event, I will still finish as a triathlete. So, that's the thought I'm holding on to and I'm just going to go out and do my best. |

We've been a somewhat neglected group overall, guess everyone is also busy, and I think it takes time for everyone to get to know each other.Walk, run, whatever you need. It's not called a "ran the whole way medal", it's called a finisher's medal. And wear it proudly. :-) Well, I did my aquathlon this past Saturday. Was fun! Did an aquathlon last October that was a teeny part of a huge triathlon, so being involved in a pure run/swim or swim only event was more fulfilling. Beautiful weather, wonderfully organized event. Love the NYC Swim events, just a cool group of people. Anyway, this swim was a mile, twice as long as the aquathlon swim last year. I have done mile open water swims in the past, just no run afterwards. This was a hard event for me. The current ended up being a lot stronger than they anticipated, and I had to keep looking g to the kayaks for instructions on how to stay on course. Once I got to the run, my legs were so stiff and I had a huge knot in my back. Just felt like I couldn't get my legs to move. Guess that's why you are supposed to practice bricks, lol. Must've been running at close to my usual pace, because run time wasn't too bad considering it included my transition time. Swim was a lot slower than I can do, but I see the times for the swim were overall a lot slower this year than last year. Current, I guess. Anyway, super psyched about next Friday. Another NYC Swim event, swimming around the Statue of Liberty! So cool, and no running involved, lol. I honestly don't know how I am going to put a 15 mile bike ride in between the swim and run at this triathlon I am doing in August. New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() i haven't been on much lately...vacation, work, weather ...the norm for everyone. I'm still looking at doing my first sprint tri next month. I've been putting more effort into getting my swimming endurance up, hopefully not at the expense of the other disciplines. I have to start working bricks in and finding more mental toughness somewhere. I'm a strong swimmer but seem to have a mental block with swimming the distance required. Any ideas on getting over the hurdles we first timers hit. Thanks |

Foot requires a $$$ custom boot to keep the pressure off my heel - 3-4 weeks in that (plus the 3 weeks I've already spent in a different boot). No running for 2 months. At least I can swim/bike, so I may focus on training for some century rides to stay sane. And perhaps I will do another 70.3 in November.... mainly because I'm pissed that I didn't get to do my A race this month. Boise was a disaster. I was successful in finding a runner and switched my entry to a relay. Day of the race, the weather was awful. They dropped us off at the swim start via shuttle busses ~1 hr before race start (I had 2 hrs before my wave started). 45 degree air temp, 58 degree water temp, rain, 20 mph winds, 35 degree windchill. And no place for shelter. To add to the mess, race organizers announced that the bike was changed from 56 miles to 14 miles due to high winds (and reports of sleet) on the bike course. After an hour of freezing, I decided to find one of the "promised" warming tents only to discover that the only tent was the medical tent. I went in there, sat by a heater for 25 minutes (in my wetsuit) and just could not stop violently shivering. The medical tent was undersupplied (2 chairs, 4 warming beds for 1600 athletes, 10 medical volunteers) and they kicked me out with ~45 minutes before my wave start. I was really worried about fatigue from shivering for 1.5 hrs and losing control of my bike on the 35 mph downhill section out of T1, so I handed my chip in. Tons of people DNS'd. Several pros wore wetsuits on the bike. It was crazy and awful. I made the right decision, but I'm still crabby over the entire thing (heel, bike course change, hypothermia). Anyways, back to mentoring! Marty - what I tell people who have issues with long OWS swims is to break the swim down into segments. For each of those segments, pick something to work on. For example, high elbow catch, keeping your neck/back in a tight line (envision a rope at tension from the top-back of your head), count strokes, etc. This just gives you a productive distraction. Niki - (again, cranky sad panda here) at least you can walk/run! I'm scratching most of my summer schedule because of the dang heel. Just enjoy the day for what it is and you will be great! Kelly - I'm jealous about your swim around Lady Liberty. That sounds super cool! |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Erin, what a crappy race day. Hopefully you have used up all the bad luck out there for the next several years and earned yourself a winning lottery ticket or something. I ended up getting a tri bike earlier this month. I am really finding it difficult to ride. I think it fits me fine (had it professionally fitted), but it is pretty squirrelly Ive never been in aerobars before and the brakes feel far away. Also, any little movement on the handlebars is really magnified. It's definitely getting better, but it's still going to be a while before I can ride it in a race. Is this normal? I keep reminding myself how hard it was when I first got my road bike last summer, and then again when I started riding down in the drops, and now it's super comfy. Jaime |

Are you engaging your core when you ride aero? That should help stabilize your body. I've also found that its best to stay relaxed and move with the bike, rather than being stiff and trying to control it. (if that makes sense). And of course, you'll feel better with practice. Enjoy your new bike! |

I thought the handling was SUPER squirelly compared to my tri bike. Probably because my front end felt so much lighter than normal. So, I suppose, it all depends on what you are used to. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi, all. Sorry I have been absent. Last Friday was the swim around the Statue of Liberty. So fun!! I was intimidated when I got there and saw the chop in the water. I had heard this event was tougher because of the current, but I wasn't expecting whitecaps, lol. It turned out to be okay, just a lot of sloshing side to side as I swam. Couldn't walk in a straight line once I came out. It was a little sad going by myself since I couldn't get the family to come so early in the day. But it was good since it was so stinking hot and we were there for so many hours due to the ferry and security situation. So amazing to swim around a national monument like that. They closed the island after normal hours, and we stayed and took over. Apparently the Staten Island Ferry commuters had quite a view of us, lol. Now I am back to reality and the triathlon is a month away, ahhhhhh! I am cycling more, and it is clear my cycling stamina needs serious help. I have only biked 10 miles Max at a time, and my hill tolerance is very little. I am thinking of cutting my swimming down to once a week and emphasizing my cycling and running training since I have no more swim events around the corner, boooo. What do you think? My swimming should be fine, right? And for my sanity I can go back to more swimming once the triathlon is over. Thoughts? Hope everyone is having a great holiday!!! |

My advice isn't worth much, but I all but ignored my strongest event (running) for months this spring--just running about once a week. My run times hardly declined at all, but my swim and bike got MUCH BETTER. I'd say my most recent oly was the first time I felt like my run was more of a limit, so I bumped my running back up to 2 or sometimes 3 a week. I am thinking that at least for beginners, we stand to gain a lot more time on our weaker events with relatively little effort, than we are in danger of losing in our stronger areas. |

I typically shoot for 2 swim workouts (3000 yards each), 2-3 bike workouts (one long, the other two shorter but with intervals), and 2-3 run workouts a week. I'd suggest going 2/2/2 s/b/r a week, having one of your bikes and runs being a bit longer and the other session shorter with intervals. |

Husband has been out of town a lot, so those weeks I am lucky if I get 4-5 workouts in, interspersed with random YouTube videos after the kids are in bed and I am housebound. Good weeks I am doing 6 workouts a week, aiming for 2 of each discipline. But this month I am getting nervous for the impending triathlon, and with husband home mostly all month, I am trying to really commit and get my 6 workouts in. I did drop one of my swim sessions so only once a week for two weeks, adding in more running and cycling, and I really notice my cycling and running getting better. Yesterday I swam, and felt maybe a touch less strong in my arms, but I felt like the fitness level was more than there to compensate. Hoping to go back to more swimming once the trial is done. Hope my plan pays off. I am just so lacking in running/cycling skills/endurance compared to my swimming. Rode for 45 min this morning, and will try to jog tonight. My first two-a-day. :-). Let's see how my legs feel tonight, lol... |
