Jeanne - I have heard good things about tri-hard.com. Not very expensive! Check it out.

It took me two tries before I found the right running coach.  My biggest learning was the one with the greatest following/experience was not necessarily the best for me.  The one I have now, has taken me to multiple PRs at every distance.  Unfortunately, he is not a tri coach so next year I may be looking for someone new (very sad about that).

Keep us updated on your tri coach search!

Thanks for the kind words. Its tough to find someone to push you the right way....I used to have trouble in high school with coaches that were very negative, but then again, they were underpaid gym teachers. Some were really great, and those people stand out in my memories. The Varsity Soccer coach was such a d*&^! I remember when he took over and the whole team was utterly miserable. I never made varsity, I just loved playing soccer.
Now I want to make varsity....I'm finally ready to work hard and put some effort into all of this.

Suzy, you might be able to keep the running coach and have them work with your tri coach that you eventually will get.

How is your swimming going? Is the thumb ok?

Jeanne - Lake Michigan is !always! cold.... but looks like you did great!

Tanya - Half mary? - Way cool!

 you guys are rocking!

i am not rocking - at a low spot - everything hurts - all from 12 hours of tree removal work.... haven't run, no energy for morning swims - feeling poorly -

Dave, aside from the grueling tree removal work (who are you Mr. T? cutting down that many trees! Oops, wait was it from the storms?)

What has your diet been like lately? I found that when I am feeling groggy, sluggish, poopy, malaise, i eat more fruit/veggies and drink a lot of water, take vitamins and in a couple of days I feel much better.

I also love this supplement, Rhodiola. It is DA BOMB! It is an adaptagenic herb, like ginsing or cordyceps, but is has a great additional side effect of helping with my EIA asthma. I take it every morning and really feel a lot better on it.

How is the leg treating you? Did the tree work flare it up?

What distance of swim and bike do you want to do and how much time do you have? Are you using a marathon plan? I used Hal Higdon's Plan from the Chigaco marathon. Runners World magazine had a marathon plan that was 3 days a week. That's the kind of run training that I like.

I think it is great that you are starting so early with the training plan. Its the best way to easy into the crazy distance and not get injured.

You should only increase your weekly mileage by no more than 10%.

You can easily swim and or bike once a week for cross training, with your marathon plan, but I think you are looking for more?

Where do you live? Will you be able to get your long runs in outside in December/January?

I live in Upstate NY. So I will be doing winter running. Which I like.

My first tri is July 08 and it is a sprint. The second is in Aug and is an Oylmpic.

I think that I will cross train until after my full and then in March I have four months before my 1st tri.

Thanks

I was wondering the same thing today!  I am training for Boston , probably starting a my formal program in late December, but want to keep biking and swimming this winter.  I will pop a note to my running coach and let you know what I hear.  I am going to guess he will say it is ok on my off running days (usually run 6 days a weel) and probably one easy day every other week, but I will let you know.

Do you have a time goal? that might also affect how much cross training you can do.

Those are good points and I am interested to hear what your coach says about tri training. I like triathlons because I could never run 6 days a week! My legs can't take the pounding.

I actually just started running on back to back days and have found that it doesn't hurt anymore. so maybe I might change my running structure (like there is one!)

I had a huge ankle break in 1997 that I thought was a career ender before I even had a career! WOW I can't believe its been 10 years. It still has mentally scarred me with trail running and any sort of unstable ground, or concrete. I'm always slow and careful on descents. Would you believe I fell on a city sidewalk?!

Anyone completed Marine Corps Mary?

Where in Upstate NY? I am in Hudson Valley, specifically, Poughkeepsie. We run at Minnewaska State Park in the winter. There is a great 12 mile loop we like to run.

What is the Mary you are doing?

Congratulations Jeanne!!!!

I spent all Sunday cheering on participants at IM WI.  They had great weather and the female winner set a 34 minute course record.

I am thinking of getting a local tri coach to jump start my training.  Do you think it makes sense to do it over the winter? I am training for Boston come December and I am not sure how to put together a program to be ready for my first Sprint come early summer.

I would call coaches and ask them these questions when you interview them.

I THINK, and I am not a coach, by any means, that with your "swimming" issues that I would get swimming lessons and start them ASAP. And work on that all winter, swimming 2-3 times a week. The only way to make strides with your swimming is to do it often. I understand if you can only swim 2 days a week, but when Boston is over, then do 3 days.

The swiming will be good cross training for your body and give your legs a break. I would bike 1 day a week until boston is over, and keep it easy. maybe on the recovery run days throw in a 30-60 min bike. I would do tri focus after you recover from Boston. that is when I would hire a coach. they are not going to do much for you up to then. (IN MY OPINION) And since the race is in April, you have May and June to get in all your bricks and transition practice which is a lot of time!

remember, since you are doing a sprint, swimming 20-30 minutes and biking 30-60 minutes is plenty of training for each session.

Glad you had a good time at IMWI!

On ST (slowtwitch) Joan Benoit Samuson did her first sprint race this weekend. She loved it! It was the pumpkinman tri.

Thanks for the advice.  I contacted my old swimming coach a couple of days ago.  Now that he is done working with his IM athletes,  he has time to work with the common man! My first lesson is next week. Stay tuned.

Jeanne - Super cool race report! Can't imagine such an event.

Suzy- - you're doing great - the swim will come- especially with the lessons.

My season, as I think I said, is over with only the one sprint in June .   but also I just don't have any motivation to train, and my legs are sore - rolling and all.  Combined with having to get to surgery for hernia lined up and I feel pretty blah.

Now we enter Halloween season which I tend to get into for the next month - - Maybe I put off training until Nov 1.... i dunno

Hi Everyone:
Great race Jeanne!
This weekend I did a 35 mile bike ride! What is it with the thumbs though? I was making a u turn slow and just fell over and jammed my thumb good. Oh well. You just don't realize how much you use the darn thing until you hurt it. I feel your pain Suzy and good luck with the swimming. I am entering another 5K Sunday and hope to see some running time improvement. My next Sprint tri is Oct. 14 http://www.starrscc.com/tri_texas_wild.htm

The Skeese Greets tri was great nice goody bag, I won a doorprize and I actually got a hand written thank you card from Stacey Keese herself. Really neat.

Have a great time decorating Dave. I wish I could come and trick or treat there. I love Halloween! Post some pictures.

Hope you had a great race Tanya!

Bike pictures soon,
Lynn

Always click one foot out when making a U-turn! I prefer the inside foot because that is the way you are usually leaning.

Lynn, glad ou had a great race. i love the Skeese Greets cards, so creative!

Dave, sorry to hear about the back surgery. But Enjoy Halloween! I get a couple of homeless people every year, it breaks my heart. Then I get kids that don't even bother to dress up. *sigh* I'm just not into Halloween anymore.

I took today off as well as yesterday. I will swim tomorrow. My next race is a 10 mile run on 9/23.

Tanya! Where is that race report!

Thanks to everyone for the congrats!

Lynn

Looks like you are having a great time training.  Good for you.

My thumb is nearly healed, but every once in a while it is painful after a longer ride. Move it around while on the bike so it does not get super tight.

I have two events left this fall, a 1/2 and a duathlon, before hanging it up for the season.  It is supposed to be a brisk 35F tomorrow for my ride so that should be interesting.

Suzy
