When you get your new bike, "speeding" is okay --- but it's not cool if you "text" while riding!

Fabulous job on the swim, that is a huge physical/mental breakthrough! It will be very interesting to see how your TI session affects your swimming. At the likely level of the presentation they'll be doing, you can't expect any focus on speed (which isn't the TI focus, anyhow), but how you feel in the water, and how you respond to moving through it, should be affected after the clinic.

I don't think I've said this before, but the swim venue for the Timberman sprint is very user-friendly. If you look at the maps you'll see that it goes out disagonally a short ways, then across, then back in. One is always very close to shore, and for a right-side breather you can practically see the expressions of the people all along the beach. On the other hand, left-side breathers get the view of the White Mountains to the north. Bilateral breathers? WIN/WIN!!

I'm still weighing the trip to the Multisport event in --- what, two weeks? Yikes! I guess I ought to review it and see what I'm in for. I'm sure I didn't sign up for any clinics; maybe some seminars, was all. Wanna think about doing a short run along the Charles on the Memorial Drive walk/jog path? (The thing is at MIT, isn't it?) Just an easy mile or two or so? Let me know!

Very good adjustment to extricate yourself from the shin/neuroma snaggle of the Wednesday run! I have no idea how that all worked, although it's one of those seemingly-blessed things that you juts have to silently accept and carry on from! Maybe it's like whistling past the graveyard? I mean, there you were, double-whammied by shin and neuroma, and 2o minutes later they were just memories. Whew!

(A new WWE tag-team ---- "Shin and Neuroma" [No?] )

I'd say that the evidence might point to you benefitting from a nice warm-up before runs, and I'll be intersted to see how it works for today's (?) run.

I owe lots more all around, but I'm late leaving now and have to scurry.

Have restfully productive (or productively restful, if that suits you better) weekends, and I'll see you all Sunday evening or Monday morning!

(Lord, this has to my last post today!)

For a few years TI used Glenn Mills as their poster boy, and I have seen video of him swimming and it is incredibly effortless. He covers a massive amount of ground (water) with seemingly no effort and minimal extraneous movement; it is really quite remarkable.

But my money is on our Tracey to be their new "public face" of how to make the TI program work for them!

DIANE and TRACY, great job on the swimming breakthroughs!!  Keep up the good work!

ANNE, I don't have the Fitz book in front of me (at work right now), but I believe that he considers moderate intensity to be at 6-7 RPE (so would that be more like Z3, maybe?).

I totally agree with ANNE about the walk/run (Galloway) method (especially as your distance increases) and for those newer to running (and a few years older), would highly recommend you take a look at some of his books regarding this. I'm not any faster running two miles than I am walking/running two miles and the latter is much easier. My running group did the Nike Human Race (6.2 mile/10K run) in the fall. Some in my pace group wanted to attempt to run the whole thing and some of us stuck to a walk/run approach. The "runners" came in about a minute faster than we did. The running group was feeling it and the walk/run group was feeling really good at the end. There were actually several in the running group with injuries that kept them out for the rest of our season. So, for those prone to injuries, I would highly recommend you give it a try. It's not a failure if you walk some during a race, we all cross the same finish line and I think for a lot of us, isn't that the main goal?

STEVE B, we will all be thinking about you in your absence (and will try to play nicely together!).

latestarter - 2010-03-04 2:54 PM TRACEY/DIANE,

That's one thing I have no problem with - doing a run/walk in a race.  Alot of people think it is some sort of failure if you can't run the whole race, and that is just not true.  I remember one of the BT coaches said - 'what's your goal? a fast race or saying you ran the 10km w/o walking?   If you want a fast race, do a walk/run combo."

Anne, thanks for this good advice.  I suspect I will have to walk part of the 5K given my sciatica flareup but it would be nice to end it not viewing it as a failure.

I totally agree!  Having the courage to start, especially when confronting some painful obstacles, is a success.  To me, with the pain you guys are having your primary goal should be to just finish.  It doesn't matter if you run, walk, crawl, waddle (John Bingham fan here), or limp - it is a success.  Not that other F-word (failure).

Off of soapbox now...back to work!

Cheers!

Since you say you liked Sheldon Brown's website, here is another one for you I just saw a post on Slow Twitch about:

Haven't looked at anything in detail but, you know the website looks good so it must be good! Wink

Travel safe SteveB!

STEVEB:

I remember the post I sent you back around Christmastime when I was really struggling with the swimming, and I said that I wasn't sure I could get to 500 meters in time for the race in August. And you said that if you were a betting man, you'd predict I'd get to 500 meters by the spring. I remember thinking, there is NO WAY! And here we are, two weeks before the start of spring! Yes, you were right...

I'd love to meet for a run if you make it down for the expo! Only thing is (as you know), I'm a sllllooooowwww runner. So we very likely would not really be running "together" (unless you slow down to a walk beside me!)

STEVEB:

One other thing - there's a TI speed-tuner clinic at the expo. (In addition to the efficiency tuner, which is the one I'm currently signed up for). Wondering if I should go ahead and do both?

Hi,

Wetsuit report:

I tried my wetsuit (sleeveless) for the 1st time today.  Did 500 yds at 2:22/100 yds.  That compares to 2:35/100 yds which was my fastest without the wetsuit. I am very happy!

My progression (500 yds):
March 2009     3:10/100
August 2009   2:43/100
Feb  2010        2:35/100
March 2010      2:22/100 (with wetsuit)

Progress is slow but sure.

HELLO EVERYBODY!!!!

So SORRY I've been missing in action here. Wow there's a lot to read for me over the weekend. I just got overwhelmed by a mixture of work and private whirlwind of things to do, leaving me NO TIME for this place and you guys, which I missed a lot!

HOpe everyone is doing well, I have not caught up with posts, but will attempt that during this weekend.

Thank you so much for the messages of concern, no I was not affected by a "real" weather event here in Portugal, just a figurative one. Training is going quite good, still focusing a lot on the running as I've got a few running events planned. First one is this Sunday, a hilly 10k for which I am not really prepared (I'd call it a C or a B race), but then, on the 21st comes the Lisbon EDP half-marathon, and that's a B or even an A for me, trying to run it between 1h25m and 1h30m. This I think I am on track for, as long as I stay injury-free.

That's really great progress on your swimming Denise, from only last March!    It's taken me 4 years to get to where I am, which is pretty close to you.       Last year a friend and I did a wetsuit 'test' as well and the results are almost identical to yours - we both were 14 seconds faster per 100 with the wetsuit.   That really adds up in a longer race.   Smile
