ANNE, have fun at the bike show!

Had a 5K race this morning and set another PR!! Was hoping to come in with a pace of under 11 minute mile and ended up at 10:46!  Beat my 5K PR in January by over a minute and last year's time in the same race by over 3 minutes! (One thing about starting off so slow ... there's lots of room for improvement!!)

Now, back outside to continue cleaning out my flower beds on this beautiful day!

Hey all-

Just sharing in case anyone has anything similar sometime...

Had a PT appointment for my calf last week - turns out my whole left side is a little tight - the problem starts at my left hip, which it tight, pulling my knee outward some, and it makes my foot point out a little, which is making my calf tight (I could flex 15-20 degrees on my right, and 0 on my left!  CRAZY), and it is compensating for all this...SO we worked on some stretches & strengthening - she sort of helped me get re-aligned, and I have been diligently doing the stuff she told me to do...icing, elevating and compressing after. Today I went for a 13 mile run - PAIN FREE.  Yeah, no kidding, I am impressed - and committed to becoming more flexible and strong to avoid that again...  It is a little sore now, but really, getting it stretched out helped a ton, and I am wicked impressed at how quickly it seems to be getting better.  I need to keep at the stuff she is showing me, and I see her again next week.

I forgot to ask if that could be from running on roads with a slant, always facing traffic so that the left side of my body is always higher than my right...I want to ask about that, it would make some sense.  Anyone have any thoughts on that idea?

Mandy

Anne, did you find anything at the bike show?  Learn anything?  I've never been to one so curious.

Lisa, way to go on a new PR!  You are kicking it on the running.  Your time was significantly below your goal.  Congrats!  I can only dream of those days when I had your time.  I doubt I will see them again.

M, congrats on your success with the laps.  Feels good to make progress, doesn't it?

Mandy, my trainer thinks I am doing the same thing on the left and it has/is going to cause me problems.  She told me to be aware of it and try to keep that side/leg/foot slightly straighter.  I don't know why or how it is the one side.

I did my longest ride to date on the new bike, 13.3 miles.  Unfortunately, there was a trail detour at 4+ miles and I lost track of the time as I was in new territory and trying to figure out how to get back on the trail.  But the bike is feeling better every time I ride it and today for the first time I could focus on putting some power in my pedaling during part of the ride.  My legs felt good although one hamstring was a little tight at the end.

Swam for a bit after the ride and made a little more progress.  For some of the laps, I was stroking continuously for three strokes on a breath, then taking a long exaggerated glide and making sure my hips and legs were up.  There were a couple of times, usually at a turn, when they would sink but for the most part they stayed buoyant.  Can't believe this finally is working the way it's supposed to work according to the TI things!  My shoulders were tired after 4 days of swimming so think I'll give them a break tomorrow.

My sciatica is still there but not causing me any pain.  I am debating whether I should try a short run tomorrow and see how it feels.  Guess I'll wait and evaluate in the morning.

Thanks EVERYONE!! Worked in the yard for about 5 hours today, weeding my beds, and between that and the run, I think I'll be feeling it tomorrow.

M, there are no "small" victories!! You are making quite a bit of progress on your swimming - congrats!

DIANE, good job again on the bike, AGAIN, and your swim! Guess you all are having some of the same gorgeous weather we were today.

MANDY, interesting about the leg ... I'd like to hear if the therapist thinks it's caused from running on a "slant".  Sometimes when I run, I have some left hip pain, never right hip pain ... until I did my last half marathon. We were running on the right side of the street and it had quite a bit of slant (especially since I was trying to stay farther right, since it was narrowly coned off and I wanted others to pass if they wanted) ... and my right hip began to hurt! Definitely seems like the slant could be contributing to your tightness.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend with success in training!

Lisa

midlifeinsanity - 2010-03-06 5:42 PM LISA - Congratulations on the PR!

I had a small victory today, too. (Mine is small; yours is big. Smile)  Went to the gym after work.

Rode the bike (5.5 miles in 17.3 minutes) & then went swimming.

Increased the length to 200 meters (from 150). Did 2 lengths without stopping - twice! (Not back to back, yet.) And the swimmer in the next lane said I had good form!! SurprisedSmile As Popeye would say, "Well blow me down!"

M

Hey Mandy,

That was a nice run - and pain free, no less!

I sort of have a similar story re my left calf/shin tightness and the neuroma problem.  I went to a new sports massage therapist yesterday for the 2nd time and I think he may have latched onto something.

He started to work on left calf and moved to inside and said boy we have something going on here.   Unbelievable the pain he could elicit and asked me to try and move just my big toe.  Barely able to and it caused the pain to REALLY worsen.   Said I was all 'gummed up' in the calf.   Not alot of room there for the facsica and muscles to move around and if they get 'gummed up' as he called it, can cause alot of problems.   Didn't get rid of it all, but made a big difference.   Gave me a new stretch to do for gastronemicus to target that area.   The muscle is called Flexor Hallucis Longus and connected to big toe.    Will see him again in 2 weeks.   Also left hip has less range of motion than right; slightly rotated so worked on the left psoais.

Rode 40km on the trainer this aft and felt very strong in the hip flexors right to the end.    I can only hope that I have as much success as you did on your run, when I go out tomorrow.    I have noticed a big difference already today when I was walking around with my hiking boots on for 3+ hours at the bike show.   No neuroma twinges happening.

I am going to start to be more diligent in my calf stretching too.   Sort of neglected that area before.

I have been told many times to avoid running on a slant and if I am doing track work to make sure I continually switch directions.

DIANE,

That was some NICE training you did today.   Good distance on the bike.   Glad the sciatica is settling down.

I had fun at the bike show and got a new pair of Pearl Izumi bike shorts for half price.   There's lots to look at and if you know what you want and don't care about last year's models, you can get some good deals.   The dealers are frantically trying to clear their stock to fit the new stuff in their stores.

I found one shop that may have the wheels I am looking for and will find out Monday when they are back to work.    There are also alot of manufacturers there, so you can learn alot, if you want to.

Hope you are able to have a run tomorrow.

I'm trying to get to something under an 11 minute mile myself. I agree about there being room for improvement!

Enjoy the beautiful weather. We're having great weather up here in Massachusetts too. Where are you again?

Hey group!

Hope everyone is having a good sunday.

Had a good race today, 10k run in just 40'02" without pushing too hard, and on a quite hilly course. 25th overall, 17th in my age-group. I'm hoping this means I can do 38'00" or 38'30" on a flat course. Now just two weeks to go for a really important race for me, half-marathon on the 21st of March.

Hi Everyone,

Well, I did my run today and same as the last one, started out less than stellar but I will say it ended up being successful.   I believe we have identified the root cause of my issues and that is the first step towards fixing them.     Following is from my log -

Used the elliptical for 5' before doing recommended stretches for Flexor Hallucis Longus.  Could feel it in both legs.  I remember telling Steve a while back that I was starting to feel the neuroma in my right foot.   Therapist only worked on left leg.  It felt very good yesterday; I could notice a difference walking for 3 hrs in hiking boots.  However, I think the biking last night tightened that muscle because the foot is so rigid and flat and doesn't move but has pressure on it in the pedal stroke, especially on the harder cycling.

Tightness started after running about 1km and the big toe neuroma issue as well.   Wasn't going to give up and stopped to massage, stretch, did more running drills and continued to walk and run and again, just like last run both the shin tightness and the neuroma totally disappeared.   Could feel my foot moving nicely and was able to run the rest of the way home without walking (2.25km).  Got stronger and faster until the end.  Legs were pretty good for doing my long bike so late in the day yesterday.   Good HR for an easy run.

Must be diligent about stretching the FHL daily (per therapist) and will have to figure out a way to stretch that while I am still on the bike when racing.

Worst case scenario, at least I know that the tendons will warm up and loosen, and the pain will go away after 20 minutes.

I was wondering TRACEY, if you have had anyone look at your calves to see if there is any tightness there?    Maybe a massage or two would help.
