Nicely done on both the bike and the swim! 13.3 miles on the bike is a great distance to have gotten to in just 2-3 weeks, and if all thjatvis really bothering you are your hamstrings, then I think you are well on your way to being as one with your bike! Are you remembering to ever-so-gently stretch thsoe hammis after each ride? They will be your friends forever if you can remember to give them regular TLC!

You seem to be doing really well at swimming "mindfully". The mental checklists are in place, and your sense of body awareness is exemplary. I don't know if you are finding this stuff sort of a mental strain, working to keep it straight and all, but in time it will become second-nature to you -- as will swimming itself!!

And good decision on giving the shoulders a rest -- they will also be your friends forever iwth such regulare thoughtful treatment!

And I'm just curious -- when your sciatica is there, but isn't hurting, what is it that you're feeling?

Anatomy time! I LOVE anatomy time! I now have a new thingy to learn about -- the flexor hallucis longus. I've never heard of that little sweetie, which I guess means it's one of about seven lower body parts that hasn't given me problems over the years.

And "gummed up" --- I've never heard that expression, but I like it and think I know EXACTLY what is referring to! And when you get a chance, can you try to describe the new gastrocnemius stretch he recommended. (If it's anything like the other stretches in the world, I'd like to know about it ---- even if I continue to be too lazy and stupid to actually try to do it regularly! )

Hiking boats for THREE hours at the bike show? Mercy!

Well done on the bike shorts and getting a potential line on wheels.......but mostly on not spending mega-money on all sorts of other stuff! As I contemplate going down to the Multisport World expo in two weeks, I worry about my ability to rein myself in and not spend $$$ in a heartbeat. I don't have any pressing needs......but I never do well in curbing my non-essential wants. (Makes me think of that line from a long-ago Bob Dylan song -- "You know what you want, but I know what you need." Or something like that!)

How do you feel about your yesterday's run? As I look at your log, it seems as if you are probably pleased with it overall, although it got off to a rocky start that must've been a bit unsettling. How are things feeling today?

Thanks.   Did it that way 'cause I was kind of lazy and didn't want to retype stuff.        I am feeling good today after my run, but I am glad that it is a recovery day.    I also decided to do 3 x 300's swimming yesterday.   First time in forever.   Did them moderately slow but not easy and the 3rd set was 20" faster than the first.

Today is DAY 1 of my official Fitz HIM training plan!!!    My test run of the new 'schedule' last week worked nicely.  I think he knows what he is doing.      I didn't follow things precisely on the weekend which is why I am a bit tired, I think.   I didn't get finished my 40km bike until 7:00 p.m. on Sat night after trekking at the bike show; and then I did the run at 10:00 a.m. before swimming.   He wants the swim done first and then the running.    If I can get my long bikes done Sat morning that will give me more recovery time and I plan to swim at noon on Sundays and run maybe 4:30-5:00 p.m, before supper.

I have a couple of questions for you but will wait till tomorrow to give you time to catch up and take a breath.

Great to have you back.

STEVEB, just getting a post in so that you don't get too full of yourself!  Welcome back!!

STEVEA, welcome back as well.  Glad to hear that your mother seems to be doing better!  VERY SCARY story about those dogs!!!  YIKES!  I wonder if mace would have worked on them or just made them madder?

Hoping everyone has a great Monday and a great week!!  Time to get to work (well, I'm at work but I need to get to IT!).

I was wondering TRACEY, if you have had anyone look at your calves to see if there is any tightness there?    Maybe a massage or two would help.

Hi Anne:

No, I've never had anyone look at my calves. Maybe I'll try massaging them before my runs and see if that helps. By the way, where is the FHL??

Thanks!

SHAUN -

Ack. Sorry to hear about the hip problem, but it's good that it all seems better now. Lingering aches, of course, are never a good thing, so we'll just focus on the bright side of things for now.

Also, keep in mind that even for people who never suffer injuries, they often have individual runs in which things hurt some. This just goes to show that the body is a fickle, capricious thing; also, that sometimes just a tiny glitch in stride or terrain-change can trigger something. It doesn't mean it's an injury per se....but is always worth paying some attention to. And you did that wisely in backing off when you did. How's it go -- "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"?

Keep us posted on how the hip feels, generally, and especially the next time you run on it.

thall0672 - 2010-03-04 10:01 AM Woo Hoo!!! MAJOR swimming accomplishment for me this morning. I've been practicing doing 50 meter sets with rests in between, and gradually decreasing my rest times to build up my endurance to eventually get to 500 meters. I've been feeling really good with the swims the last few weeks, so today I decided what the heck, I'll go for 250 meters without stopping and see what happens. To my delight and surprise, I was able to complete the full 500 meters! At around 300 meters, my arms started to get tired and I was getting a little winded, but I think it was because I was pulling too hard. So I re-focused on keeping my arms relaxed and rotating my core, and that helped a bunch. It was quite a relaxing swim! It took me about 16:30, so I won't be winning any awards for speed, but I don't care! I finished it!! I'm psyched because back in December, I was turning purple and ready to keel over after doing 75 meters. I remember thinking, how in the world am I going to ever do 500?? So now I can use the time until the tri (August) to work on my technique and therefore (hopefully) improve my speed. Yay! Tracey
GREAT JOB TRACEY.  Two cents from the peanut gallery - spend some more time extending your distances for a bit, and then perhaps some more getting to the point where you can do those consistently even on bad days.  Work on technique means that soon, 1,000 meters will be as easy as 500, and from there, speed work is more easily incorporated without hurting your distances.

STEVE:

Thanks for this advice. You're right that overall consistency is best... and I would love to someday get to 1000 meters!

Great comment about the Galloway approach setting the stage for the walls that might come later. That really is just another form of preparedness, and knowing what something feels like when you have to do it.

For me and marathons (and half-marathons as part of HIM), there are the times I have walked and the times I have HAD to walk --- when running was a physical/metal/emotional/moral impossibility. It is of utmost value to be able to "give yourself premission" to walk, and moreover to be mostly content with that decision. It is hardly ever an easy thing to do --- even when one is aware of how many truly talented athletes have come to that pass at some point in their careers.

Let's raise a water bottle to Jeff Galloway!

TRACEY again -

Oh, yeah -- sign up for both if you can. In fact, if both are still available if and when I decide I can actually make it down there, I REALLY should do both myself. My last swim clinic was in August '06 (with Paul, the Swim Smooth guru), for heaven's sake, so I'm overdue for some controlled work on my perpetually less-than-optimal stroke.

If you sign up for the speed-tuner, you might want to schedule it for 3-5 hours after the efficiency clinic. I have found some swim clinics to be both physically and mentally tiring, and also with TI it would be good to have some time in between to think about what you did in the first clinic. Having said that, though, you might want to call or email them and get a first-hand recommendation. (If you do, let me know what you find out!)

Good point Steve!

I was planning on doing them back to back but your idea sounds better. I have to balance it though with the fact that I'm leaving my husband to watch our son while I'm gone. Let's just say that my son is in full 3-year-old mode at the moment, and my husband's patience runs out very quickly. Not a great combo! (I know, my husband needs to suck it up!)

So, maybe I'll take a 1-hour lunch break then do the speed-tuner clinic. I'll try emailing them too though about the intensity of the clinics and see if I get a response.

Thanks!

Tracey

STEVE again -

You are very fortunate to have both the palate and the stomach to handle a wide range of "nutritionals" -- especially early in the morning. Many people can't even get to first base with specially-formulated nutritionals at ANY time of the day or night, so it's good for you that this stuff works for you. I generally do not have a great stomach, and I am generally fussy about foods, so it never ceases to amaze me that I generally do okay with most gels/bars/drinks/capsules.

Let's raise a water bottle to our stomachs!

And another water bottle raised --- this time to the owner of the dog who fed them adequately that morning!

(Or to the runner who passed that way [or tried to.....] just a short while previous to you. .........)

Cheers?

It's a beautiful 54 degrees here today and I just got back from a 5k run. My iPod is acting up, and I was initially bummed about that, but it was actually quite nice to hear the birds singing and the sounds of the breeze!

Anne, I took your advice and worked some walking intervals into the run. I actually think I may have walked more than I ran! But when I did run, I tried to make the runs really "matter." I'm trying to work some of the chi running elements in: leaning slightly forward, and trying to land more on the forefoot versus the heel. I also made a point to make the run intervals faster and more powerful than my usual "maintenance" pace.

In the end, my total time was only 3 minutes longer than my usual 5k time. Which is actually quite amazing considering how much of it I walked! I didn't time any of it, I just ran when I felt I could and walked when I felt like I needed to.

I think I may take this approach when I do my 5 miler on Sunday.

Off the the pool now... Going to see if I can do a repeat of my 500 meter swim.

General question to the group about your training schedules:

For those of you who work full time, how do you fit it all in??

I work full time, but am EXTREMELY lucky in that I work from home and have a very flexible schedule. I always train during the day and will usually make up the work time later in the afternoons or at night after my son is in bed.

I think my work schedule is going to get quite a bit busier in the coming weeks though, so I'm afraid I may have to either cut down or find other times to train (which is a challenge with a young son and a husband that works crazy off-hours).

How do you all do it? (STEVEA: I know you train every morning at the crack of dawn! I just don't see myself being able to do that. Most of the time I can't anyway because my husband is at work early mornings, and I need to be home with my son. I suppose I could get on the treadmill in the basement though...)

I'd love to hear how everyone works it in.

Thanks!

Tracey,

Simply put, no spouse/significant other or kids or any other sort of family commitment. I've also fallen into the moving around for work and so the social life has gone for a crap in recent years so this has free'd up more time.

I'm part of the afterwork and weekend crowd doing all of my training. My work keeps me occupied from 6:15am until at least 4:45pm with transit time. Then 4 nights a week I'm at the gym for an additional 2+ hours. The biggest issue I have is what I'm having for dinner! So my one night off from the gym is when I end up cooking and making left overs for many nights.

I may end up changing shifts and going to a 2:00pm - 2:30am (again with transit time), 7 day a week schedule. If/when this happens will be a complete change for my training as I would have to change to training prior to work from after it.
