Meulen - 2010-08-05 9:09 AM Allright....I'm kind of hosed here. I've been really consistent this year with my training and I have to be proud of myself for that. However, enter last week. We had family in town all week and were entertaining. I did a lot of running around. Worse, was the fact that our guests were big drinkers and I'm an ex-binge drinker. I usually do really well staying away from booz and bad food, but I had a big breakdown last week. I still did some trainin early last week but it fizzled late last week. This week I feel like garbage. All the booze and processed food I ate last week, along with lack of sleep has caught up to me. I don't feel prepared for the Naperville tri this weekend. Originally, I planned Naperville to do with my wife and basically as a training tri since I want to focus on longer ones. However, being very local, my whole family and lots of friends decided it would be cool to come see me strut my spandex stuff!!! Now, I kind of want to do well. My question is how do I get my groove back with only a few days left? 1. Nothing now, take your losses and rest up for race day? 2. Get back on course with your nutrition and do some speed work bike/run today and swim friday? 3. do an easy brick tonight and easy swim friday, and hammer race day? 4. other suggestions? I know I blew it here. (sorry guys/gals ) It's my own fault, for sure. Is there any hope? or am I just going to suck Sunday?

Easy solution for you Brian --- you hang next to me for the entire tri.  My pace will be a cake walk for you and you can let your friends / family know that you were making sure the noobie didn't drown or die in some other catastrophic manner during the event!!!

Kidding aside, with all the training you've been doing you'll be fine.  You've all reinforced again and again the importance of a positive mental outlook.  You've got the base, done the work, and now it's time to relax and enjoy yourself.

All right, 3 days until race day.  The swimmings been going pretty well / think I've figured out how to slow down and "rest" much like I do when running.  Assuming, I'm right, should be able to get through the swim with no problems.

A couple of questions for everyone.  First, the swim is in an old quarry and has an open water "feel" for a good portion.  The pool's open tomorrow and Saturday.  I still have some fear is that I'll freeze up again in the race.  What say ye -- head out for a practice swim or brave it race day?

Second, on my drills I can really feel the glide when my right arm is extended.  However, when I extend the left and breath, there's no feeling of a glide.  What's likely going on / how do I get the glide on the left?

Very confident in the bike and run as the training's been going great on both of these.

As always, appreciate the thoughts.

shmeeg - 2010-08-02 11:29 PM ^^ Yea, it's amazing how much crap you can collect in a very short time when you have the buying bug Money mouth

Ok sports fans, since I'm already slow and inefficient in the water, how do I swim slower, easier, or....more relaxed?  I have two speeds in the pool.  On or off.   I really want to try and just swim easy and not concern myself w/ time or speed in this weekend's race but I just can't seem to do anything but churn my arms, do some semblance of a 2bk and gasp for air when I turn my head to breathe.

Jay - I too had only two speeds when I started swimming. I had to consciously tell myself to relax every time I got in the pool. I had to keep repeating it over and over. This is how I finally learned to relax (I can still remember the day): Donned my racing wear, cap and goggles. I got in the pool and started swimming my first 25 yards , turned and during my second 25 I made a CONSCIOUS decision to slow down. As a matter of fact, I actually stopped in the middle of the lane (no one was behind me) and just let myself float in one place face down in the water while I did a progressive muscle relaxation check: Starting with my head - is my head tensed? is my neck tensed? (mine was - really badly....I had to totally let go of the tension in my neck before I started seeing improvement) are my shoulders relaxed? back? chest? butt? legs? toes? (This actually can be done in under 10 seconds so you don't drown!)

Make sure you tell the lifeguard at your pool that you will be doing this beforehand so they don't freak and think you've tacked-out and are floating because you're dead. Surprised

Once I was absolutely sure that my entire body was relaxed, with special attention to my neck and shoulders, I then rotated my body to take a breath, face back in water, and started swimming slowly and smoothly. I focused on the catch-up drill to begin with, because of it's seemingly slow, steady and long tempo....it makes sure you aren't just flailing your arms around. I stopped worrying about my form and started paying attention to how relaxed I was instead. Sure enough - my time improved significantly in less than one week! Laughing

Interesting idea -- will give this one a try after the event this weekend.

i say don't sweat it.  one more swim isn't gonna make you feel like a sea creature.  you said so yourself, you figured out how to 'rest' so if you freak, just chill for a minute, collect yourself and then drive on.

i dunno, but my weak side is WEAK also, and i experience the same sensation.  i suspect it's just not being balanced on the non-dominant side.  maybe one arm drills to improve it?

Very confident in the bike and run as the training's been going great on both of these.

As always, appreciate the thoughts.

So what does this mean to the non-indoctrinated?  You get a buy into a final race at the end of the season if you place X position or better?  A cash payout? Sponsor deals?  Do I need to get your autograph now so I can sell it for big bucks on ebay in a year?? Laughing

Only the top ten people for my age group and region will be given spots at Nationals.  So, basically, it means I'm in a good spot to be invited to Utah to get my butt handed to me! Undecided

Like Jay referred to, most people will have a dominate and non-dominate side in the water.  It takes time, practice, and reinforcement to get beyond this sensation.  This is one reason why bilateral breathing is so important as it balances out your stroke.  If not already doing this, I would try to incorporate this breathing pattern into your drills.

Thanks Tim/Jay.  One armed drills and bi-lateral breathing to help with the balance -- both balance in water and side vs. side balance.

So I just drove the bike course and checked out where T1/T2 will be. Looks like a super long run out of the water to transition and now I wish I left my gatorskins on the bike. The roads are lookin pretty rough! Couple of small hills, the out leg seems more uphill than back so I should be able to cruise the second 1/2 at a pretty decent speed. Gettin excitied now!

I was reading about this race in another thread.

The good news is the surf forecast is only 3-4 feet.  I guess last year had some pretty adverse surf conditions.  People are saying the run from the water to T1 is about 150m on the sand.  Seem about right?

Anyways, have fun out there tomorrow!  I'll be waiting for some results here at work.

Yeah, some of the guys that I'm racing w/ did it last year and they said it was like 8 ft seas last year.  Scary!  Yep, long run up the beach and the LCAC launch ramp out onto a flightline type lot where they keep the hovercrafts.  Hopefully I can squeak a AG spot!

Took it easy today with a very light swim and very light bike ride -- barely broke a sweat on either one.  Physically, I'm more than ready.  Have done all of the distances and am seeing PRs each time out with the efforts becoming easier / more natural.  Mentally, still a bit skittish after the OWS in the last event.  This time the layout is such that I get a break in the middle + the beginning/end are in 4' deep water.  Breaks down to nothing more than a couple of 100-150m reps with a stop in the middle if necessary.  Rationally it's easy.  Frustrated at myself for even worrying as confidence is my strong point in everything I do.  After tomorrow, we'll add swimming to that list of confident activities.

Course is 400m swim, 22k bike, 5k run.  Hoping to see 15 minutes on the swim, 45 minutes on the bike and 30 minutes on the run.  Key will be taking my time and relaxing.

Will post a report after I get home.  Again, appreciate all of the support and guidance.

Well, I have no idea what my final time was or where I fell in the AG rankings, but I had a BLAST at today's race.  I truly love triathlon.  I'll do a race report tomorrow evening or Monday after I get home and can take a look at the data from my Garmins.  Good luck tomorrow at Naperville boyz!

Hope we have as much fun tomorrow as you did today Jay.  Look forward to the report -- any 8' waves?

No, not too bad.  Mostly about 4', 2-3 wave sets.  The first wave got HAMMERED by a big set.  They pulled 2 guys out of the water on the jet skis after that.  Pucker factor went up a lil bit at that point. Laughing

Hopefully I won't be a rescue victim tomorrow -- would be embarassing.  And I have to confess I at least considered the possibility -- went for a dark blue swim cap at first and then switched to a bright green one so I'd be easier to find!!!!!

Would have shXX if I saw two guys rescued prior to me even starting on my first OWS!

Glad you had fun Jay. Sounds like a cool race!

Curt, be quiet about the rescue!!! You're going to do fine. Just forget about everyone else and swim like you're swimming laps in the pool. You'll be fine!

There's going to be 2000 people at this race!!! Sheesh!!!....I usually pass a lot of folks on the bike/run, because I'm such a slow swimmer. This is going to be a nightmare to navigate. God knows, nobody stays to the left like they're supposed to!!!

I'm off to bed, up early in the morning. See you tomorrow Curt!

WOO HOO!!!  Just home from the event and things went absolutely great!!!!!   Day started out really nice when Brian and his lovely bride stopped by in the transition area to say hello.  Could not hook up afterwards, but as he had family there probably better for him to spend time with them.  Conditions were perfect with overcast skies, hardly any wind, and 75 degree temps.

Highlights.  First, the swim course had about 50% of the course in water that was shallow / where you could walk.  I swam a bit of this, but walked the majority focusing on staying calm, cool and collected.  First stretch through the deep water went great.  First half of second went great.  At the turn, was a lot of contact and I got knocked around pretty good.  Flipped on my back and relaxed.  Finished no problem.  Not sure on actual time as I was about a minute late starting the watch, but clocked at 12 minutes.  Bike course was very easy and had only a couple of 100m stretches with hills.  For 22km showed 41:27.  Calcs our at 19.2 mph which is a PR by a ton.  Took the run "easy" / felt like I could go much faster but did not want to fry myself.  At the turn, started slowly building and finished at what had to be close to an 8:30 pace for last 1/2 mile.  Felt really good in that with 1/2 mile to go, picked up a guy that was walking and talked him through the finish.  Time clocked at 28:37 which would be about a 9:10 pace.  Transitions were a bit slow at 4 minutes and 3 minutes.  Time on watch showed 1:29:18 / guess is that the official time will be just over 1:30.  One other thing, I was in the last group of four to go in the water (do I really want to do this?).  That worked out awesome as I passed about 20 folks on the swim, probably 200-300 people on the bike, and about 50 on the run.  Didn't have anyone pass me on the bike and only about 4 on the run!!!!!!  Very motivational to keep reeling 'em in.

Thanks again for all of the support.  Was really spooked going in to this and the words of encouragement really helped!!!!

That was a great race!! It was nice meeting you out there Curt. I was looking for you at the end and didn't see you.

Today everything came together for me at once. I had an incredible race for me. Overall, I placed 62 out of 1593 finishers. I was 57 out of 889 men. I took 10th in my AG out 155!!!! The best part was the fact this race was so close my family got to see it.

I beat all my personal goals. I even had a good(for me swim) I had an 8:55 for the 400m. My bike time was stellar too with an avg mph of 23.6, and time of 34:42. On the run I almost completed my goal of running a 20 handle 5k. I literally missed it by 10 seconds!!!!. I know I can run the 5k with a 20 handle for my goal, but I can't believe I almost did it in a tri! My transitions weren't great but not bad either. There was a REAL long run to an enormous transition area out of the water. I was way in the back end of it so T1 was 3:00 and I'm sure almost 2 minutes of it was running. T2 was good at 1:37 with 1/2 the run to the run out. Overall time was 1:09:22.

I'm really stoked at my results! I can't believe I took a top 10 with 155 people in my AG!

I'll wright a race report when I get a chance, but this is the jist of it.
