I like swimming in the ocean a lot more than the lakes! I grew up around the ocean and just love everything about it. Anyways, the differences. In a lake, you are going to be less bouyant and will lack any assistance-resistance from nature. Obviously, no waves, rips, sandbars, et, but normally a little better visibility. In the lake, you will be able to find landmarks to spot off easier on the opposing shore. In my opinion, ocean swims require the most skill. If you can do the distance in the ocean, you will have no problems in the lake. I agree 100%. I've spent limited time in the ocean and no time doing any serious swimming. Most of the lakes I've had the tri's at this season were pretty smooth. Nothing compared to the ocean. I think you guys that do these ocean swims have a serious leg up. Although, I will say we get a certain amount of chop from boats when swim in Lake Michigan, and it's a huge lake so we get some swells. That may be close to comparable given the lack of bouyancy. I'd love to get out to the ocean with a wetsuit. I'm really curious how easy/hard that is with bouyancy vs swells. On the same note of swimming..... I've added an interval workout into my swim mix. It leaves me pretty gassed and I'm worried it may take more recovery time than my previous swim workouts. Should I only do 1 of those a week just like bike/run intervals? or can I do as many as I want given swimmings ease of recovery and low impact? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As I understand it from my limited readings online/mag articles, swimming is such a low impact sport that even your hard days dont require a full recovery day. But you know your body best, if you feel good only doing one hard day a week like that, then stick with it. |

One thing I would mention is that getting out of the saddle for climbs takes a little practice. I remember when I started doing this. I was gassed so frign' quick it wasn't funny. After some time and practice it became second nature. You still expend more energy out of the saddle IMO. But there is a benefit to it when you get the cadence/power right and you are used to it. My point is, maybe the race wasn't time to start a new hill climb strategy. |

As you know, the swim is what cost you a lot of time. That really sucks that your pool will be closing next month too. Is there anywhere to take lessons, join a gym with a pool, or a community pool in Palm Springs? |

I takes time to learn how to get out of the saddle, but still be able to keep your cadence up without mashing at the pedals. Trainer is a good place to drill on the technique in intervals. |

Me out of breath at the top. I'll keep workin on it. I probably need to find the right gear to be in, I may be going at it in a harder gear than I need to. |

Yeah... you can't go over every hill like you're doing hill repeats in training. You still gotta pick up your speed after you crest and gain that momentum back. Gearin is crucial. You should be in a gear that keeps you around 70 cadence imo. On your swim.....what is your pace in the pool? How much did the conditions effect it? Edited by Meulen 2010-08-11 1:26 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Meulen - 2010-08-11 11:25 AM On your swim.....what is your pace in the pool? How much did the conditions effect it? Crappy. I always figure in my 'rest' between laps typically, so usually about 2:30-3:00/100. Believe it or not, I actually prefer swimming in the OW, cause I can't see anything so it's like 'oh, I'm at the buoy already' when I decide to take a look around. I don't know what my deal was this last race, I sucked down water every time I turned my head to breathe, but it wasn't like there were waves crashing over my head when I was doing it. Maybe I was just too used to the calm pool water. Felt like I was on the surface when I would rotate, maybe the chop did affect me. I'm not good enough to diagnose these things. :D |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Things have been so busy since getting back from my week of vacation. We've been doing lots of preliminary wedding planning and I don't have much room in my brain right now. No more excuses! I'm going for a run - NOW! PS - None of you know a good place for a rehearsal dinner in North Tahoe do you? Resaraunts seem limited and/or expensive. Anyone know someone with a lakeview home that has room for 27 on a deck that's ADA accessible? Making dreams come true takes deeper pockets than I have. Sheeeeesh. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Got a little over ambitious with my run tonight. Since I'm pacing the Morgan Hill (Half) Marathon I thought I'd try using the Garmin Virtual Partner feature of my watch. I set it for 8 miles, 8:00 pace. Sure, that's faster than I'd usually run but maybe I'll surprise myself. FAIL! The first four miles were good, then fatigue and a head-wind on the way home had me deeply disappointed. Oh ya, I drank and ate a ton on vaca too...feeling heavy. It's a wake up call for me. I need to take my marathon training seriously or I'll be in a world of hurt. Tim - it's a ways off still but are you thinking about doing the Morgan Hill Half or Full? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Get ready to open the wallet Dave!!! LOL When I got married (almost 11 years ago ![]() ![]() btw...Dave, thanks for the swim advice this spring. It's starting to come together now. I'm setting a goal for 3 swims per week right now. One swim will be intervals/speedwork, another focused on drills and the last one focused on endurance. Last night I did 2x1000m swim's, both around the 22 minute mark. (which is good for me) I'm hoping to break under the 2:00/100m's this season yet. Here's my swim sets 1. 150 kick 150 pull 150 free 400 free 4x100 medium/hard 8x50 medium/hard 150 cool down 2. 150 kick 150 pull 150 free 2x1000 easy 150 cool down 3. Just swim with focus on form and do drills I have fins/paddles/pull bouy to work with and do: catch ups shark fins one arms popov's 360 rolls etc. thanks again! Edited by Meulen 2010-08-13 8:55 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Meulen - 2010-08-13 6:48 AM Get ready to open the wallet Dave!!! LOL Luckily, our families are helping out a lot financially...but there are some things I know they are uncomfortable paying for, like the $4k band we want. We're keeping it small too, probably 125 invites, and ultimately 110-115 people showing up. Dave, thanks for the swim advice this spring. It's starting to come together now. Great!! Sounds like a good plan for the way your broke up the workouts. You'll notice big improvements if you consistently get in the water 3x per week. I was only doing 2x in prep for my HIM. The key for me is trying new things to add some spice and variety. Throw in some ladders or pyramids. One time I did a swim where everything was in 4's - 400 warm-up, 4x400's, total distance of 4400 meters, etc. Guess what my favorite number is? =) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys. I've been sick. Trying to catch up on posts. Dave - Congrats on getting engaged! Tim - Sucks about your stress factor. Everyone that has raced - WTG! You guys are truly impressive. On top of my having strep throat and a secondary infection, the weather here has been just miserable. 105-107 with heat indexes in the 110's. Even getting up early in the morning to ride provides no substantial relief. Humidity is high. I hate it here this time of year. I'm heading to Montreal. There's a Formula One race track on which I can ride my bike (or a rental) - it's the sight of either a HIM or IM....I'll do a little recon and see how mundane it gets going around the same track after about 25-30 miles. I may just make it the sight of my first HIM. Hope everyone's having a great weekend, and hope whomever raced today had a good one! ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leg is feeling a little better after a week of no running. At least I'm walking without pain now. Plan is to lay off running for another week and see how it feels. I would really like to get into the MD office next week for an xray. If I knew for sure that a fracture wasn't present, I would feel better about easing back into the run the week before the race. Time will tell... but I really can't miss this race at the end of the month.
