I'm worried about not being able to compete now. I jacked up my back on Monday and I'm having tons of muscle spasms that just won't seem to go away.

Thanks for the lines in the lake, the motivation thoughts and that is a cool quote Andre!  Looking forward to it and hope your back feels better soon as well.  I am going to have to try out the sauna idea.  Carbs Carbs and more Carbs!! ;o)

It's Clair again with a ridiculous question re: the sauna. Do you stay in the sauna for one full hour and then do a bike or run? I am coming down Friday night and will only have Saturday to adjust to the temperature. By the way, the blue line will be sure to help me-I'm glad someone else will benefit too

Good question...I've been stretching and doing some leg lifts in the steam room, but no aerobics lately.  Will have to try that.

So, I've decided to get a fake tan as part of my training.  Started tonight with 4 minutes in a tanning bed (I'm a redhead).

I had a bunionectomy in late '07 and evidently my toe seated back into the joint improperly and I have thoroughly torn it up during training.  (Torn up the joint/cartilage, etc.)  It hurts and I have been told not to run on it anymore until the swelling goes down or I'll end up needing a joint replacement.  Oh yeah, the tan: since it will take me FOREVER to finish the "run", I decided I should get a base tan as I'm not sure I can carry enough sunscreen with me for that kind of time outside!  Especially with the heat and humidity and as much as I think I'm going to be sweating!

Andria the tanning is pretty funny, good for you I should consider doing the same.  I am pretty fair as well. I will try the sauna for a little bit before my run tomorrow to see how I feel.  I will let you guys know.  I will be sure to hydrate as well-

Today will be my last ride on my 'race' bike, then I am taking it in for a blessing from my bike shop and tomorrow I have to drop it off for TriBike.  I feel like I am leaving one of my kids.  Actually, this is harder than leaving one of my kids, at least the kids could say "Hey, what the heck am I doing in Albequeque?  I'm not supposed to be in Albequeque!!!"

parrj - I'm sure you have gotten lots of advice on your back, but here is my two cents.  You may want to ask your MD for a good muscle relaxer.  I am not one to advocate drugs for every ache and pain, but sometimes you just need a few doses of something to stop the nerve irritation/muscle spasm cycle.  Hope you feel better.

I have been working closely with my broker to ensure I have plenty of cash in the "pain" bank.  Just made another minor deposit.  Plan on making a withdrawal next Sunday.  Fortunately the only economy affecting it is MINE!

Slow taper...body getting confused...(What?  You've been torturing me for months...NOW you're gonna be a lazy ...what the?)

Sauna?  Hmm, been routinely doing lunch time workouts (bike, trainer, treadmill, or combo) then sauna for 15 to 20 minutes for months (base and main).  Never really thought of it as being a part of my strategy/training.  Always used it as a mental/physical relaxation sort of thing to get out of the office.  It seems to make sense that it would help in performance to a point.  But each persons' body handles the heat/humidity differently.

IMO, hydrate and then take inventory.  How's my stomach?  Do I feel washed out?  Salt intake?  All important mental thoughts.

Have fun!

Does anyone know what the wind is like on this course?

I did IMFL in 2007 and the crosswinds were scary.

Would running Zipp 808s be a problem in this race?

I ran 1080s last year with no problem. I doubt winds will be strong enough to cause a problem with 808s. I have trained on the “hilly” section of the course often and have never encountered winds strong enough to cause a problem. Normally the winds pick up later in the day. Sometimes the winds shift directions from early morning to late morning. So it is possible to get a tail wind going out and coming back. Of course, the head wind both directions is possible as well, but I thought you would rather hear “tail wind”. The winds look great tomorrow for the bike (4-5 mph).

well, im hoping that the numbers are not an indication of wave times, or else im screwed. M30-34 is last. unfortunately, me thinks that is infact the case. please, someone who went out in the last few waves last year tell me that you were not held up much by everyone already on course.

I actually enjoy going off late for the mental side, you are passing a ton of people and very rarely getting passed.  Its nice to pick off people as you go.  As an average swimmer I had little trouble running into people, the bike is pretty open so traffic jams were not too bad. As for the run its a cluster F&^# anyway since its 3 laps and some will be walking 3 and 4 wide taking up the entire path.

Good luck

Ok, so I am #1771 and I am F35-39, so what DOES that mean?  If Pro Men start at 6:20 and the last wave has to start by 7:50 where do the rest of us fit in?  Are some age groups together? Do we start every 10 min or every 5?

I don't know why I have become obsessed about this start time thing.  I think it is because my run pace has been crappy for the last two weeks and last night I had a dream that I choked on a Sport Bean when I was on the bike.  I must be really excited!

BTW JonCT - If you do start behind me, don't worry, you won't pass me until the bike

Lots of talk here about the grassy, uneven run. I train a lot on trails here. Would wearing trail shoes be better than my usual road shoes?

Thanks for any advice!

Numbers are by a.g. and alphabetical.   Has anyone found wave starting order yet?  Last year the older age groups and the women started first, but I'm confused b/c my husband # is lower than mine (he's m 40 - 44) and my brother in law who is 30 - 34 is higher number than me.  Odd!
