How are the workouts going for everybody?  I'm feeling great physically and am starting to get excited for my first race - July the 11th....  Haven't heard much from some folks, I get pumped when I read good things so keep them coming..

PS - In the pool today, I was leaving a wake behind me.  Laughing  In fact, each time I reached the wall and began to turn, I had to duck my head to avoid the oncoming wave Wink

I'm tapering a bit for buffalo creek this weekend and feel really good.  I didn't realize how overdo my body was for a good rest / taper week.

I'm stating publicly that my goal is 02:40.  That means I have to take 8 minutes off of my time last year.  that's a tall order, so wish me luck !!!

What races do you guys have going on this weekend?

norwaytri.com on July 11th
lake swim of 1km (2/3 mile or about 1100 yards)
bike 11.6 miles
run 5k

Smallish race capped at 125 entrants.  I figured it would be a good opening experience for me.  I'm not sure why the swim is so longish for a sprint tri, but I think it'll work in my favor because I have been hammering the pool...and I just ordered an "Xterra Vector Pro X2" wetsuit - they are running a 50% off sale this month online.

good choice on suits.  I just swam in mine for the first time last weekend and it felt good.  felxible in the upper body with 2mm neoprene and thick (5mm) neoprene in the torso and legs where it really helps.  comfortable.

That does seem pretty long for a sprint... Try not to knock the other folks out of the lake with your massive wake!

same one?  looks like I chose wisely then.  I'm looking forward to testing it out later this week in a local lake.  I had read good reviews on it and couldn't pass up the deal when I saw it advertised.

I'm going to TRY to dish out as much punishment on the swim that I can to whomever ends up behind me, as I'm realistically concerned that they'll pay me back when we get to the run

before you decide to blow it out on the swim, do a few 500 yard time trials in the pool at differnt exertion levels.  Then decide if the extra effort is worth the time savings.  Most people find that the time savings are negligable.  (ie: very little time savings that could result in much more time savings if that energy is applied to the bike and run)

your plan may be a good one, just test it out before race day.

Not much to report here just continuing to train.  I will be doing the Cherry Garcia 5k on the 28th.  I ran it last year and it was my first race ever.  So I am coming up on my 1 year anniversary of competing and I'm running it just to see how much I've improved over the year (maybe for the pizza and ice cream afterwards too).  Last year I ran it in 30:26 and this year I'm expecting to run it at about 23:50.

Holy cow!!!   6-7 minutes off of a 5k time is a huge improvement.  Just the fact that your planning that time speaks to how much you have improved.  Good work !!!

Thanks Ken...I ran a 24:10 in a very crowded race last month and lost some time in the beginning weaving in and out of slow traffic so I think 23:50 is achievable.  I posted, not so much for my benefit (although I do appreciate the praise), but more for encouragement to those who may be struggling right now.  Just put in the work, do it smart and don't over do it, let your body rest when needed and you will see your times come down.  I have to laugh and remind myself on those tough days that I am running my long, slow, distance runs at a pace that was all out for me for 3 miles last year.  Good times! Laughing

Ken, as a coach, what is your opinion on mixing weight training in for triathlon? I see so many varied opinions on this from strength = speed, all the way to never lift weights... Obviously we aren't talking about body building to grow huge muscles, but rather, things that are more specific to strengthening the body for endurance sports... We're also not talking about sacrificing sport specific workouts, but adding weight training in addition.

I'm all for it.  Your idea of strength training specificly for endurance sports is right on.  It's also appropriate that it doesn't replace sport specific training, but is a suppliment.  Well said.

I think it works very well for keeping the body healthy (ie: injury free) because muscles, and connective tissue adapt to the strain and better support bones and joints.  It also helps develop strength that can be applied to all 3 sports.

Thanks! That's what I thought... I see people bash the idea of weight training all the time, but it doesn't make any sense to me. If you target and strengthen the muscles that you use to push the pedals or pull your arms through the water or run up a hill, how could that not benefit you in a race or allow you to train longer?

I thought about weight training everytime I pushed up a steep climb on the bike last weekend!

Thanks again!

Buffalo creek XTERRA went well.  Not great, but good.  I dropped a few minutes off of last year's time, but was lower in the age group rankings than I wanted to be.  There is still some sorting out to do so I don't know final age group rankings, but I'll still earn some points.  It was a fun weekend either way !!!

how about you guys?

Hey great job mattie & congrats to Coach Ken.  Coach, I was wondering about the water temp. How did that turn out?

Ok, I did an oly this weekend.  ah another lovely experience...  Actually, it was fun but I wasn't prepared enough.  First, 2 wks ago got another pair of running shoes and went too far in them when I was breaking them in.  That was dumb so I stayed off of my left foot (heel/arch area) and tried to concentrate on swim & bike.  Swim was fairly good beside getting kicked in the head 4 times and got my breathing to settle down after 300 m.   The night before I  changed out my tubes & tires thinking that would be a good choice but I didn't bring another tube with me on the bike.  tube blew out at mile 11 and I was stranded about 35 min. Other than that, it was hot by the time the run came along (93) and was starting to cramp up and my left foot was still sore, but I finished.  Live & learn, should have brought some gel on the run, I was kind of depleted besides being frustrated at the blown tube.  Onward
