Sorry for no posts for a while, I've been a zombie all week with work and weather.

My shoes and pedals:  I have spd pedals and cleats on the bottom of either Shimano mtb shoes (I can walk in at work without difficulty) or Keen commuter sandals.  The clipless have made my pedalling much easier.

300k yards in a year?  Holy crud.  Holy crud.

My 500 for the YMCA sprint I did without any training was 12:51.  Several months later I am just getting under 10 minutes.  Maybe better if I don't run before the swim.

Happy New Year

Ok! I just started my swimming and man do I suck at it.

I ways thought I was a decent swimmer. I mean I was #1 at the YMCA when I was a kid.

I am struggling and I would greatly appreciate some advice.

Do you guys know of any good online resources or books etc to teach competitive swimming techniques?

Thanks,
Bob

I'm right there with you.  I've been trying to tell myself it's similar to when I started running and that I just needed to stick with (and suffer through) it until things got better.

There are a bunch of drills in the articles section (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/index.asp?catid=158).  I started working with a swim instructor at my gym so I haven't used them but they are pretty similar to the things she has me doing.

After a lot of thinking/agonizing I've decided to bag my long run for this weekend.  I dropped some wood on my left foot yesterday and its all swollen and tender.  I'm going to try to get in a short run tomorrow if I feel up to it but right now a double digit run doesn't seem like a good idea.  The question now is how do I go about modifying my plan to make up for missing what I believe to be a pretty important workout?

The plan I'm following is broken down into 4 week blocks.  The first three increase mileage and the last is an "easy" week.  Somehow I lucked out and Christmas fell on an easy week.  That means this is the first week in the next block.  I'm thinking I should consider this week a second "easy" week.  Since I'm not going to do my long run this week I don't think it would be a good idea to the long run from next week (because it will be even longer) when I get there.  I'm think I'll do the mileage I was supposed to do today next week and just slide everything over a week, in essence I'm going to knock off the last (and longest) long run from this three week block.  Then I'll pick up again with the next four week block.

This seems like the best approach since it keeps building the mileage incrementally.   I don't want to over compensate by doing the longer next week and risk a different injury because I made too big of a jump.  Does sound like a good plan?

Thanks,

I see several here have the same problem with the swimming as I do.  I just started back swimming and will really have to put some time in before my first triathlon in April.  I have been very busy the last three weeks and am looking foward to get back to my routines I had before all the travel at Christmas and all the guests we had over this past week for the Capitol One Bowl here in Orlando.   It was great seeing many old friends and eating some gumbo and Louisiana cusine.  All of our guests left this morning and I went out for a 13.1 mile run.  The weather was chilly but I had jus the right amount of layers and never got chilled.  Now that the holidays are behind me I have nothing to concentrate on except my training.

Kicked off my 2010 with an 11 mile run and 2400 yds at the pool. Neither went very well - the heater at the pool broke, so the whole pool was at 89F - steamroom.  So they had a ~3" hose shooting ice cold water from the outside pool (unheated and not used in the winter) into the pool at the end of my lane.  Nothing like going from 90 to 60 every 25 yards. LOL  I was planning on 3000yds, but cut it short.  I was pretty worn out by 2400 (water temp?  Not sure).

Run sucked - cold, windy, and I just wasn't feeling it.  I did get it done, so that's a plus, but it was just one of those days.

I do think this makes for the longest single day training yet, though, so I guess that is a good way to kick off the new year.  Lord knows there is no way I can do that every day, though!

No time like the present to get going on the swim training - particularly since that HIM will be here before you know it!  It is hard to help on such a technical sport over the net, but I'll help in what ways I can.

BTW, if you still want to post a pic of that Felt if you email it to me I can get it posted for you.  No problem.

It's 18 degrees here.  If my foot wasn't still swollen I'd be bundled up and out there.  Suck it up! ;-)

I'll check out youtube and post some videos.  One of the main things I see with people starting out is, they drag their lower body.  Pay attention to the position of your feet in the water.  You want your feet to couple of inches below the surface of the water.

You may want to grab a kick board and do some sets of just kicking, so you can get used to the postiton.  Also try not to let your kick break the surface of the water, wasted energy.

The plan is 16 weeks long (I'm in week 5 now) and the longest run is 20 miles.  The plan calls for doing that 3 times but I would loose one of these.   Here are the long runs for each week and what they would look like if I modified them.

Perhaps a 10-12 miler in your unknown spot?

I don't think you are going to suffer for a slight decrease in the long runs.  Looks pretty reasonable to me.

I have some web space to load files into.  I threw it up there and linked to it.  Does your ISP offer web space with your account?

The question mark is the run I was supposed to do this week that I'm skipping.  I was going to try to get in 6 today but my foot still isn't feeling up to it.

took your advice and went out and rode this morning.  A chilly 37 degrees for the old man from Florida.  I retaped my Felt and posted some additional pictures.  I saved them on a website but when I go to try and copy and past the url it won't paste.  I don't know why?  Any ideas?
