Erin - Those are some really good suggestions to use the available video resources on this site and YouTube.  It might not make sense when you are watching them but just focus on ONE motion or stroke at a time at each practice and it should work.

Thanks for everyones advice on the vitamins.  I will ahve to do a little more research and check with my doc.

As far as New Years - I am laying low this year.  I normally have a show but one of my band members is out of the country.  We are just going to my wifes friends house.  They are from Russia and celebrate Russian Christmas I guess.  Trying to figure out how to explain to my kids that a Russian Santa Claus will be there handing out presents-haha

New marathon training program started this week.  I am trying a program from an old book one of my neighbors gave me called "The Four Hour Marathon".  It ahs to be from the 80's haha. I am tweaking it a little bit and will see how the long runs go since the longest runs are 22 & 24 miles.  The long runs are much slower than race pace (10:40-11:15/pace).  Then half way through training they add in longer race pace runs around 8-10 miles at 9:00-9:09/pace.  There is also one speed work day doing 400M repeats.  Should be interesting.  I am really interested to see how all the cross training wil limprove my strength and help during the marathon.  The goal is to stay INJURY FREE!!!!

Hi!
Just have to say, I really enjoyed reading the last series of posts. Erin, I spent most of my life in small towns so I truly understand your challenges. Your focus is wonderful and I have no doubt of your success!
I also appreciate the advice to use what you have and grow from there. We used to call it " grow where your planted". It reminds me to do the best I can each day. As someone who is "finacially challenged" at this time, I find it easy to get worried about the "how" and it can interfere with doing what I can. I expect to join at the bronze level on BT in mid Jan and thus have access to some of those great videos.
Scott, thanks for sharing the completer/competitor info. I think I am struggling because I actually want to compete but I need to start with completing. Having said that I've always know that my biggest competitor was myself. Somethings don't change

Good news, my family is showing signs of being supportive LOL. My husband is the best! But my kids either think I'm crazy (and want dad to do something LOL) or are convinced I'm going to get hurt. While I'm not sure their wrong; this feels good and right! So I continue LOL, my son is in my camp now. If they show up for race day, you'll know I won them all over :D

For New Years Eve, Springfield Area Arts Council is hosting an community wide celebration with tons of activities, and performances, venues etc. and it's only $12 for adults, all kinds of kid and family stuff. www.springfieldartsco.org if you are in the area! Not sure we will make it to midnight but looking forward to celebrating a new beginning.
Happy 2011 to all of you

One more thing! David, you are doing such a great job with this group. Your a natural coach/mentor and thanks for your efforts, volunteering and whatever frustrations we but through in the coming months!!

Bryan, hope the new shoes work out for you.  I know how hard it is to run with shin splints (stinks)

You will be glad.  If you got the trainer and the block for the front for $150 you got a good deal.

I did a hard high cadence on the bike tonight.  2 sets of 5 mins @ 85% @ 100 rpm, 5 min rest, then 3 X 90 secs @ 105% @110 rpm then finished with another 5 min @ 85% @ 100 rpm.  70 mins total.

No IT band problems at all.  Had massage therapy before the ride.  Loving the Computrainer...it makes everything so damn precise and its actually fun watching the screen to see what's coming and how long it lasts.  No more looking at a stop watch for intervals... Very cool deal.

Good day, swimming in the morning, bike this evening.  Tomorrow is my rest day.  Movie and date night.

LOL, sometimes life just gets in the way.  If we were professional triathletes we would be upset with youl.... Just get ready for a great 2011.

Scott, the computrainer is the best piece of equipment you can buy.  It does not allow you to cheat, if your workout should be 200watt then you better keep 200 for the entire course.  I started using a power meter last year and got a new one last this month and its the same for the road.  So many people get caught up on speed but its a irrelevant number as you could be into a wind/down wind/in a pack.  There are days that 20mph seems slow and some days it feels like I'm working hard.

I'm off for a run going 3 with dog then a couple more by myself for alittle more pace.  Weather is 51 (windy but warm).  Be safe everyone.

A Computrainer is definitley on my list of equipment to buy someday but I figure I need to get a decent bike first so it will most likely be a few years until I can afford one.

I got an awesome workout in today and ended a good year on a good note.  I felt great and I could have stayed at the gym all day.  It's funny the gym was packed today - must be people getting an early jump on their new years resolutions-haha  I can always tell its that time when all the ellipticals and sit down bikes are packed.  Only have to deal with the full parking lots, lockers rooms and fitness area until 2nd week of January then they start dropping like flies - haha.

Scott - I also use the neti pot but only when I am sick.  Do you use it when you are not sick as a preventative?  I never thought of using it that way.  If so how often do you use it?

IceManScott - 2010-12-29 6:19 PM Dave that is a great match analogy.

D3 is great.  I take it plus a multi, potassium and calcium for muscle firing, C for a disease fighter, glucosomine for joint health, betalinine to assimilate lactic acid plus claritin.  I also use a neti pot.   I've only had one minor cold in 2.5 years.

They are great but expensive, If I  had a tight budget I would get a power meter as you can use that on the trainer and on the road.  You can pick up a wired one for a decent price (about 300-500 used).
I know the feeling about the gym being packed, luckily I only need the ymca for a pool. We only have 1 pool in our town and lanes are at a premium the 1st month of the new year. Were looking at endless pools but just can't justify the cost without knowing how long we will do this sport.

Yes, Neti Pot daily...really has helped to keep me illness free and to limit problems when I get them.

And yes, power meter first.  You can do everything you need with a power meter and a trainer during the winter and the power meter goes out doors so you can gauge efforts during races and during workouts.  Really a HUGE plus to making the workouts more efficient and to be able to target work during a race so you don't blow up on the bike.

Computrainer is another step.  It makes it simple for the coach to email me workout files.  He writes a brief narrative about the workout like  yesterday's 1 X 5 mins @ 85% @ 100 rpm and 3 X 90 secs @ 105% @ 110 rpm, two sets.  That would be enough to do it on a trainer with a power meter.  Having the CT just makes like simple.  It times me and when the efforts come, it increases resistance on the back wheel so I can just spin.  I think the bigger payoff to the CT will come when I do the 3D Ironman Moo course.  I can actually "ride" the course in my basement whenever I have a chance.  I will try the coaching file on it Sunday and maybe try out the 3D for the first time too just for fun.

Y'all have fun tonight and stay safe.  We just saw True Grit.  Really a great remake.

Happy New Year Everyone.

What a morning! Tornado watches and warnings in December are enough to drive this Pacific Norhtwest girl, nutty! Decided to go the gym anyway (needed to stick my tongue out at those crazy tornados) and was able to get a run in. First one since my arch strain earlier in the week. It went well, no pain during but a little sore after. And no TornadoesTongue out

Was supposed to swim but the gym closed early so I will try to fit it in the limited schedule tomorrow.
Tomorrow is my first ride with the local cycling club. It will also be my first ride in a good size group.
Should be interesting.
Should I log this as my workout? It will be a couple of miles short of my plan.

One last crazy question; What causes shin splints? Shoes? form? ...

be save in your travels !
2011 Blessings ahead!
Marys

Most likely it is from too much too fast.  I suffered pretty bad a few years ago and did excersises similiar to these and it went away for good:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/18686-shin-splint-exercises/ - Do these every day and before you run to strenghten the muscles on your shin.

Do you have them?   If so take it easy and avoid any speed work or high itensity.  And remember the general rule of thumb for running - INCREASE YOUR WEEKLY MILEAGE BY NO MORE THAN 10% EACH WEEK.  Any more than that and you are asking for injury issues such as shin splints and IT Band.

A Happy New Year to everyone.

The pool opens in 3 days at my gym from 3 weeks of repairs!!!  I also will be the proud owner of and XTerra Vortex 3 wetsuit and a Serfas saddle shortly so I am TOTALLY stoked!  The only thing I am "missing" from my gear is switching my road bike shoes for tri shoes and I will be set for this year.

I've had a huge "gift" of sorts.  Found out that my footfall when I run is the primary component causing the issues with my ankle.  I was landing on the outside of my foot and rolling inwards.  Add a very high and rigid arch and thus begins peroneal tendonitis.  Paying close attention to my stride and footfall has done wonders.  If this is a repitition of a previous post, my apologies.

And can I take a brief moment to talk up my fiance?  She is as fanatical about being fit as anyone can be.  She loves it so much that she is a crazy fan of people who work hard and achieve.  Ironman Triathlon coverage had her in tears.  I am so truly blessed in this facet of my life that I can only hope that others on this board are as lucky.

Ah well, a couple of glasses of wine and one waxes rhapsodic about "stuff".

Again, a Happy New Year to everyone and I hope to bump into some, if not all, of you at a race venue, be it tri or run, this year.  On that note, who's running the Shamrock in Chicago and who is a little irked that it is being done in April?

CHEERS!!!
