For now, I will keep with my opinion that a beginner swimmer doesn't need to worry about such things.  I say swim, practice good form, and throw in some fast sets once you're comfortable.

I wasn't swimming them fast.  Actually, it caused me to focus on my form being as efficient as possible so I wouldn't get winded too quickly.

I don't know about the average beginner swimmer, but I get worried about breathing.  I've always had allergies.  My nose always seems stuffed and my nasal passages are narrow, so I'm pretty much a mouth-breather (classy!).  I've got sleep apnea that is a result of my nose/mouth/palate construction.

When it comes to swimming,  I over rotate my head to breathe.  I don't keep my head low enough in the water - I think this is related to my breathing concern.  Lots of problems associated with the breathing.

So, with this drill, as the breathes/length decreased, I wasn't allowed to worry about breathing.  It forced me to focus on form and getting down the pool xx yds before I could breathe again.  In my head it went from "can I breathe now, how about now" to "I'm going to breath in xx strokes," with that stroke count increasing as breathes/length decreased.  It seemed more relaxed.  So, for me, it did help.  I think this is the direction my instructor was heading, rather than it being hypoxic training.  I imagine I might get a similar benefit from a snorkle.

Now, the kicking drill with my hands to my sides - that just seemed stupid, awful and uncomfortable.  So, that probably means I should be doing more of them.

I gotcha.  I did want to add... if I've learned one thing in triathlon, it's that it's a never-ending quest to find what works best for you.  Not what works best for the masses, for you.  If you feel that it's helping you feel more comfortable in the water, and also you can work on your form, go for it.  I'm probably so set in my ways, I'll spend the whole workout thinking about that and nothing else. lol

Sculling with the arms strait out and doing your kicking drills. its a great drill to build back and shoulder strength. and they do suck.

Another snowy, crappy day in the Northeast.  Snowy commute in this morning.  Abandoned ship early and came home in time to shovel out the driveway.

Since I was home early, hit the trainer for 90 minutes.  Not too bad - watched the first episode of Shameless om Showtime (pretty good).

Here's my question:

I took 3 months from cycling to focus on a half mary. When I was riding seriously during the season I could average 19-20 mph on the road.  In the interim I got a new bike (P3) and have been relegated to the trainer since December.  I've been training mostly at medium cadence (85-90) in the small ring and feel like I'm having a hard time keeping up my speed (hard pressed to push over 16 mph).

I've been strength training to get some of the leg strength back.  What do you guys see as a drop off in speed between your trainer vs. road work?

I think this is a hard question to answer. I place my wheel sensor on my back wheel when on my trainer to get an accurate mileage. I know that this is probably not atrue representation of miles, but it is what I do. I know that whatever speed I ride on the trainer, I am faster on the road, so I am more concerned about cadence than speed.

Anybody else???

I have found that it takes more torque to get the wheels going on a trainer, also there is way more rolling resistance on the wheel as well as the fact that there is no coasting no assist from down hills and because the air is still it does not radiate heat away from the body anywhere near as efficiently. I have also found rides on the trainer (for me) seem to be a lot slower and end up being shorter. this is why I use trainer time to run drills and work on even power all the way around the wheel

Hi guys,

Haven't been here a lot these last days.

The diet is going allright, 11 pounds down during january so far.

Stength/cardio 2 times a week the last weeks. Stepping up to 3 times/week from this week. Adding in 30 minute powerwalks 5 days/week from now as well.

The weather here is snow and 17 degrees Farenheit. i'm not man enought to be out running or cycling in this weather.

For February i aim to do a measly 1 mile swimming. and that's probably the amount of swimming i've been doing in total the last 40 years. :-)

I want to do something today but 2 hours and 20 minutes into the new day, I can't commit to anything at the moment. Director is coming in, in less than 8 hours and the sleep log on my training log is accurate(which is really scary )

well I spoke too soon. I couldn't keep my eyes open so I did a 25 min yoga workout. Its not much but it is something, plus I stay nice and flexible for all the lovely BT ladies

Morning all!  So I tried the bilateral breathing last night for my 100yd warm up and cool down and I'm pretty sure I looked like a fish out of water, not to mention I took a lot of water in.  However, my 480yd freestyle was a personal best time using the two stroke so I was proud of that.  I'll keep working on the bilateral to see if it will be better for me though.  Ya'll have a great day!

Man, my attempt at a 3x each schedule is putting the hurt on me.  Bagged my early trainer ride today after a "speed" workout (relative) last night.  So, I've either got to get it in tonight late or tomorrow morning - screwing up my Friday rest day.

The guy that finishes one place ahead of you will get his trainer ride in today!!!  Tongue out

But seriously, do not under value a needed rest day. Rest days are where you make your gains.

Omg, this is what I think about everytime I want to skip workouts.  After I missed the qualifying cutoff by one place last year, I"ll be damned if that happens again.  If I don't make it, I better not make it by at least 5 places. lol.  Hence the 6am workouts this week.  It is week 6/20 already!

11 pounds for january so far?  That's great!  I think it's harder for all of us to keep pounds off during the winter.  I like to think it's one of those naturally occuring phenomena in order for our bodies to keep warm or something.  Even my dog eats more over the winter and she does less.  Like she's trying to conserve body fat.  I'll have to do some research on this topic I think.

I think we're all counting down the days til spring.  It's been a heck of a winter so far.

Bravo on the 11 pounds.  Weather here sucks as well. Shoveled 16 inches today and spent 45 minutes shoveling out my after it got stuck in my parents driveway.

March 20th (1st day of spring) is around the corner.
