My February was starting to build a little, but not too impressively....

February's totals:
Bike:    8h 22m 44s  - 134.86 Mi
Run:    7h 11m 51s  - 46.13 Mi
Swim:    4h 12m 55s  - 11900 Yd
Strength:    15m

On an unrelated, but IM-related note, I am curious about wetsuits at IMWI.  I already own a full suit and am thinking about buying a sleeveless.  If nothing else, I found many of my summer OWS's I was a bit warm in the full suit and having a sleeveless would offer me some options.  I am wondering if people find themselves too warm in their fulls suits in Lake Monona during IMWI?

The past 3 years I have worn a sleeveless wetsuit for IMWI and have been fine. The water temps are not cold.

Hi everyone!

I too am racing IMWI this year, since I will not have the opportunity to actually train on the course, curious to hear what gears everyone is running for race day. I have a 50x34 w/ 12-25. Not sure if I need to go to a 11-28.

Beating the thread count for IMPL will be a tough goal! They were an active bunch.

Name: Albert

Ironman resume: IMLP 2010, and a handful of 70.3's

Why WI? I have family in WI and wanted to make traveling to the race easy for them this year. Plus I have heard lots of great things about the race.

Goal for IMWI: Have a solid race and hoping to be an 11hr finisher

What I am looking forward too: Going zoom zoom on the bike, and dancing my way down the finishing chute.

Advice: Slow and steady gets you across the finish line. Don't try to keep up with others as they pass you on hills b/c chances are you will see them at mile 19 on the run. Surprised

Just out of curiosity do you guys know what the ballpark water temp usually is for the race?  I'll definitely have my wetsuit, but was just curious if it ever gets warm enough where it may not be wetsuit legal.

Water has to get to 83.8F for wetsuits to be disallowed by WTC, and the chances of that are basically zero for race day.

There is a small possibility that it could be warm enough (>76.1 F) for wetsuit-wearers to be ineligible for awards, etc.

In past years the water temp has risen over the 76 deg mark in the weeks leading up to IMWI, but it has always (at least as far back as I can remember) dropped back down before the race.   Unless we have a very hot summer I'd think there is absolutely no possibility that the temp will be over 83.

Cool, thanks guys.  I bet it would be pretty toasty swimming in 82 degree water in a wetsuit.

Cool video in your blog!  I still remember the that first turn,  I didn't know anything about mooing and was stressing out big time.... when I got to that corner and everyone was mooing, it helped me relax and remember it was just a swim.

I have the same question about bicycle gearing as Mcluvin.  Regarding a compact crank and low/easy gearing cassette.  I am going to get one, the other, or both.

I feel that I am a very weak cyclist.  I just started riding last year and IMoo will be my 3rd or 4th tri ever.  I'll be training appropriately, but I am always slow on the bike.

I was thinking of erring on the side of caution and getting both, but a lot of folks said maybe just one would do.  What do you folks think?  Should I get both a compact crank and a low/easy gearing cassette (thinking ultegra 11-28)?  If you recommend just one, which would you choose?  Sounds like you might get better gearing out of the compact.

I bought climbing gears over the winter.  I can't remember exactly what it is, but I think it is 11-27?  I've had it on over the winter and it makes a huge difference - riding the wisconsin course, I can keep my watts where they are supposed to be and my cadence where it is supposed to be up to about a 6% grade.  There are a few parts worse than that grade wise where my cadence drops, but it was well worth the investment IMO.

I recently switched to a compact and couldn't be happier.  For what it's worth I switched my rear cassette to an 11-26 and have yet to go anywhere near the 34/26.  And yes, I have had my bike off the trainer. ;-)

to Melle,

I have a compact setup as well on my Trek 7.0.  50/34 and the rear cassette is an 11/28.  I couldn't be happier as well..  Only on the steepest of hills have I gone into 34/28.

I'm a relatively strong rider and have gone with a compact/12-25 the last two years at IMWI and have never wished I had a bigger gear ratio to push.  If you're not a strong rider, I think you'll be glad to have the compact plus some additional gearing in the back.  Important to be able to spin up those climbs if you hope to run later!

I have ridden a 54/39-11/27 for the past three years. I think I am switching over to a 50/34 this year though.

Yup after getting fit to my bike today I will be gearing down to a 50/34 for the summer and ride a 11/25 in the rear. Once I have the setup in place and ride the loop ill report the differences I notice from 53/39 to 50/34.

What do you mean by stronger rider? Let's talk watts (ftp or np for the race), or avg speed for a 70.3 bike leg. I will not be able to train on the course at all this season. Well, I plan on riding for a few miles on course two days before the race but that's it, so any insight you can give would be helpful.

I just ordered a 34/50 today.  Last attempt I had a 39/53 and really paid for it.  Of course I would not put myself in the "stronger rider" category.  I averaged 143 watts last time, which might have worked if I weight 140 lbs, but I don't.  Yell
