mmez - 2012-01-05 6:36 PM I wonder if I'm trying to do too much too soon. I have done something every day this week and on a few days, I've done 2 workouts in a single day (my logs are up to date). I have also been working on what I eat and my portion sizes. I wonder if I'm not getting enough calories... Today I went to the gym after work and found an available treadmill (the weather is fine for running outside but by the time I get off of work it's already getting dark and I just don't trust the drivers around here hence the reason I use a treadmill). I just wasn't feeling it and my legs felt heavy and tired. I eeked out a little over 2.5 miles with the intention of hitting the bike/trainer once I got home. Of course dinner was being put on the table when I arrived home, and I knew I wasn't going to ride after I ate, so I sacrificed the bike tonight. I'm going to try and do a group ride on Saturday so we'll see how that goes. Plan for tomorrow is another run followed by some weights (which I did yesterday in addition to running and and a 45 minute bike video). Saturday I'll do the group ride and maybe another run followed by a rest day on Sunday. Does this sound like too much for a newbie?

Mariah, definitely listen to your body.  You want to push yourself to the limit, but not over it.  One lesson I've learned over the years doing this is that the building of fitness occurs during recovery, not while you are training.  Once you're in a position to do a 3 hour ride followed by a 10 mile brick you'll be ready, but don't push too hard so early in the year.  Concentrate on getting to know your body, your limits, and what you're doing right.  Eat healthy, rest, and enjoy the sport.

Matt--I can't find you when I search you either---weird!  I changed my search privacy settings so you should be able to find me now (the search default was set as only "friends of friends")----this might be something you need to change as well for people to find you.

Happy Friday!

I'm in the throes of a stretch of long hospital shifts this week and am only managing to find time to work, eat, sleep, go to bed, and get up to do it again.  Thankfully, things quiet down for me for a few days after tonight's shift and I'm looking forward to getting some training in on Fri/Sat/Sun (to include a Tri 101 clinic on Saturday morning).  Really need to figure out how to squeeze training in on work days as well!  Really enjoy having this group to connect with---I'm learning so much from all of you already!

I'm on Facebook if anyone also likes to keep in touch that way: Robin Cody White

Take Care,

Robin

Robin,

I tried to add you but you're not appearing in my search result.  You all can add me if you want- Matt Gilmartin.  My profile picture is me on top of Mt. Evans in Colorado this past summer- climbed my first 14,000 foot mountain on a bike~

I'm working on it!  The pool's been closed due to some very cold mornings, it was 18 F yesterday morning IN FLORIDA.

We are starting to get back up to normal temps again, so swimming will begin again soon.

And for the most exciting news...we will be ordering my wife's road bike TOMORROW!

I was thinking Global Warming was responsible for this crazy Chicago weather, but I guess it's probably more like an inversion or something!  It's truly unheard of to ride outside in January in Chicago.

What kind of bike are you getting your wife, Aaron?  The couple that tri's together stays together.  I think this sport was a big reason my ex-wife and I divorced.  I do love triathlon though, so I guess it was worth it LOL

Haha, Global Climate Change is doing some crazy things.  Two nights ago it was 18 F at my house, today we are going on a 9.5 mile run and it's 60 F.

My wife and I run together, so we will probably tri together too!  She is getting a Trek Lexa SL.

I was going to go one a group ride this morning but my husband and son got free tickets to some football game (something to do with the Army team) and have to leave for that before I would be able to get back for my daughter, so I'll have to try again next weekend or so. I normally wake up at 0400 to go to the pool during the week and was excited to get to sleep in this morning, however I woke up at 0500, which I guess could still be considered "sleeping in" since I did get 1 extra hour I've been struggling to come up with healthy snacks without having the same thing every day. What are some of the favorite snacks that everyone here eats?

One more person I needed to add to the roster.  Everyone, meet Rahul:

Great! Thanks!

I am a newbie to the sport. I did my first sprint triathlon last September and was hooked! 2011 was a great year for me physically, I finally gained control of my up and down battle with weight loss...I am hoping training for tri's will not only help me lose more but also be a lot of fun!

I'm married, father of 2, 6 yr old son and 3 year old daughter. Work for a local fire department as a 911 supervisor and am picking up my Cervelo P2 tomorrow. Biking is my strong point, followed by running, then swimming. There's something about swimming for speed that just throws me. I'm hoping this group and more practice will help!

My goals for 2012: I have signed up for 4 tri's,3 sprints, and one olympic distance. I want to train (not overtrain) my heart out and complete the olympic distance in a respectable time. The event is taking place on my 32nd birthday!

Another member of your group: Jamey (batabings) is a close friend of mine and we are doing some of these events together!

Thanks for accepting me into the group. I am looking forward to it!

Rahul

Mariah- great question.  I'm always stocking up on whole raw almonds, Activia yogurt, any kind of fresh berries (particularly  blueberries), I've got a real weakness for the smoothies at Lifetime Fitness, too.  Bananas are nice and portable, and Boost or Myoplex protein shakes make a great snack too.

All, here's my proposed swim from my training program today.  It's more of a beginner workout, so I'll do something more complicated.  On the other hand, those of you new to swimming would really benefit from doing this.  Benchmark that 30 minute swim.

Swim: WU: 10 minutes alternating slow-fast pacing. Play with different strokes while warming up.
MS: 30-minute steady swim. Swim without stopping. Count your strokes on the first 25 of each 100. Are they staying constant?
CD: 5 minutes very easy. Choice of strokes or floating on your back and sculling

And in case you are curious, here's the one I am going to do.  I wanted to stick to 2000 meters.

2000 meters
1.25 miles

1) WARM UP
· 2 x 200 m. freestyle easy -- 15 secs. RI (rest interval)
· 200 m. pull
2) WORKOUT
· 2 x 250 m. moderate (10 RI)
· 6 x 50 m. distance per stroke (DPS)* (10 RI)
· 2 x 200 m. race pace (15 RI)
· 100 m. pull
3) COOLDOWN
· 100 m. easy
* in DPS, swim the first length at moderate pace, swim the return length counting your strokes. Glide on the return
in order to get to the end of the pool with as few strokes as possible. Try to reduce your strokes per length each lap.

Just starting to swim...when I do my laps, I touch the edge of the pool, take a breath and kick off...is that cheating?  Or should I be doing it some other way?

Hi all,

I got sidetracked--holidays and an infected tooth. I'm ready for training--so glad to be part of this group.

I've joined a Healthiest Loser challenge, 18 weeks long, at my gym. At a pound to two pounds a week, I'll end up with considerably less to carry into my first tri. My first attempt will be April 1, so appropriate! It's the Rainman Tri in Seattle, 15 minutes in the pool, 30 minutes with my bike on a trainer, and 2.2 mile run outside.

Today I'm doing an interval walk.

Anyone else sick or feeling ill?   It started in my sinuses,

Just so frustrating feeling sick.

I've been having what I thought was a tooth problem, maybe sinus. Anyway, it's much better. It's hard to be low energy at the holidays and for training. Hope you're feeling better!
