It's definitely something to worry about Surprised!

Just keep on the therapy for it until it feels better, a tight soleus is easy to strain.  Really if you can get a massage get one.

Anything painful is possibly something to worry about. 

Stretch, massage, and baby yourself until you feel okay to do your next run.  Even if it means taking a few days off.  Remember, your body is still adjusting to the new demands you're placing on it--and with a new running style/gait, different muscles are being recruited than in the past.  Some of them probably quite unaccustomed to any extra physiological demands.

I know in my first season, my known weakness were my hamstrings--the first to tighten up in any long brick.  So, this off-season I worked on a lot of hamstring exercises to stengthen that area.

I'm sure it's just soreness and nothing serious. I'll stay off my legs for a bit and have a good stretch.

Hey All,

I have a 3 mile T-mill run tomorrow.  My legs are tired from the past 3 days, so I assume I'll be going slower.  One question, does anyone have any mental games they play to help them? I watch TV, but that's not so good at my gym because they don't have sound, etc.

Oh, as for running inside, I live outside of boston so the roads suck and the weather is cold.  I can stomach running in anything around 40 or higher, but below that it is just no fun, and I won't go.  As I get inshape, I'm more willing to be cold, but not when I'm this bad.  Also I'm going with em  73 so if I workout it's her timeframe. (if you look at her blogs, she's a bit slower), so for now the t-mill works just great.

As for sports drink, when I hit a certain point, or I feel like I'm already dehydrated, I drink some watered down Gatoraid. I find that mentally it helps and gives me a little taste, but doesn't ovewhelm me with sugars, etc.

I only run inside in the winter, too. It's FREEZING here, at the moment.

 

I think, this early in the season, there's no problem with runnning indoors. I just use inspirational music to run too, but I can't run as far as 3 miles, yet lol.

Hey, everyone. Hope you're having a great week of training. Sorry to hear of your sickness, Ron. I just finally got over a 2 week battle (it had me out of training for 3 days, but in hindsight I should have rested longer... live and learn).

Any advice on swim technique/drills? I'm more interested in hearing what has worked for you rather than "book speak". I've got the TI book and am doing some of the drills, but I'd like to know if any of you have specific training/skill routines that took you from just novice swimming to actually feeling really comfortable in the water. I've always been a strong recreational swimmer, but there's a big difference between swimming for fun in a lake and training for a 1/2 or full mile swim.

Thanks in advance for any input.

x2 on the music. Currently I'm doing all my running indoors twice a week. I'm currently up to 5 miles and next week it's up to 5.5. I run this at a 10min/mile pace to keep my HR down and the only way I can get through this much time on the treadmill is with music. I can only sneak my runs in before work or after the kid has gone to bed. At these times it's just too cold for me as well. As it warms up just a bit I will move back outdoors with out the music.

I like to play with the pace and incline settings to "break up" my runs on the treadmill. 

For instance, I break up an average 1hr treadmill run into three 20-min. segments as follows

- 10 min., 6.5mph, 1.0-incline
- 5 min., 7.0mph, 1.0-incline
- 5 min., 7.5mph, 3.0-incline
- Repeat twice more.

I find it does a great job of breaking up the monotony, and simulating more "road like" conditions.  Note: the mph numbers are just where I "start", and they'll change from day-to-day and machine-to-machine.  Since most treadmills--even the best maintained--are notoriously poorly calibrated--I usually let my heartrate be the guide.

You can come up with your infinite number of creative treadmill runs this way.

I used a combination of of Total Immersion and (non-T/I) Swim instruction/coaching.  I started in June '06 with "zero" swim background.

In my first year, all I wanted to do was cover the distance efficiently--with plenty of HR beats left for the bike and run.

I slowly worked my way up to covering at least 1500-2000m per session (in sets of 500m), two to three times per week.  Very few drills.  No paddles.  No pull buoys.  Just straight swimming, and Vasa Trainer work.

My end result was a 35'47" 1/2IM (1.2mi -or- 1920m) ocean swim in 51F water last Sept '07.  Good enough for this landlubber who couldn't swim 50m the year before.

More recently, I've become a believer of devoting 1 swim session per week to drills.  Bilateral breathing drills.  Kicking drills.  Small paddles.

Finally, I can't emphasize how important it is to get a profession swim coach or instructor to analyze your stroke!  What you think you're doing, and what you're actually doing are two totally different things!  

Also, if possible, definitely get in some open-water swimming practice before your race.  It will mitigate the inevitable first race open-water "freakout" you hear so widely about.

Hey Everyone,
I just had a really good run 1st one in a long time, Temp was really nice for ND in the winter 30F. I planned on running hard because the Blizzard watch had been updated to a blizzard warning.

I ended up with splits of 5K splits of 20:36 & 19:58k, I was in a pretty good zone until the turn around of the 2nd 5k. I looked at my watch and thought holy cow I'm cruizing way to fast for this early in the season and mentally knocked myself out of sync for the rest of the run which became a physical and mental struggle after that. 40:34 10K

ADCO, I would get some up tempo tunes for the treadmill. I 've only run on the treadmill a few times but the I-Pod helps.

How is the Napa sprint swim? I just picked up an Orca Sonar for a great price and plan to do some swims in a month or two down at the Aquatic Park. A friend swims their every morning and she's invited me along whenever I feel up to it. Should be, um, interesting.

I think my time was right around 15 minutes which would have been wicked fast for me if it was the correct distance. My friend came out of the water in 11 minutes. Also, the water was really warm, I think they said mid 70's. It most likely will not be this warm in the spring. Overall, it's a great place to swim. Clean, clear, and not as cold as the Bay. Have fun and have a great race.

Well, how was everyone's weekend? I did a nice, slow run today and an easy mt. bike ride with my GF yesterday. We had a very enjoyable weekend in Nevada City.

I signed up for an Oly (the Golden Gate Triathlon on June 1) and a couple of running events (12k around Angel Island & 10 miler in the Presidio). Now, time to get a swim coach...

Went to a tri show which wasn't as big as I'd hoped, but I guess the sport is still pretty small here.

I got a helmet, saddle, lock laces and gloves. Looked at tri suits, but I think I'll leave it a little closer to the time in the hopes that I'll drop some more weight :D

Tried out the new saddle and, although my sit bones were still sore from  the friday night ride, it felt pretty good. No "soft tissue" hot zone issues.

I have to say that I'm really enthused about training at the moment :D

What a long weekend! It started with my 2:40 flight on Friday being canceled and then having to buy a suit on the way home for Sat night.. Luckily thanks to working out lately, I was mostly an off the rack size (even being a HUGE 5'7"

Sat started off by setting up for the "Heart Ball" - a friend is the head - it is to benefit the American Heart Assoc and then after setup, I had to run to get my suit, and then do "coat check" all night.  While seemingly easy,  was on my feet for 12 hours on a marble floor and was miserable by the end of the night. 

Sunday was a rough one! The Mrs and I were tired (up well past bedtime) and had lots to do.  PLUS, she dragged my butt to the gym (sigh.)  Once I stopped my I actually had a good run. See my notes, as my wife "guest blogged," as I was too lazy to get online!

Here's the Biggest issue!  I have a pain along the side of my right ankle.  It doesn't really hurt to do anything specific, but at times seems to twinge.  Today is a is a non-running day, but has anyone else had anything similar?

Not sure what you mean by direct side.

 

Let me put it this way, my recent pain (soleus muscle) was on the inside back (so, 7-8 o'clock on the right leg, 4-5 o'clock on the left leg).

Subject: Late joiner here! I hope there is room
I'm 38 and training for my first sprint tri on April 19th. I'm a runner (won a 10K a month ago, 1st in AG in a 15K last weekend and 7/1400 in Disney 1/2 this January) and run 30 miles a week. I'm bringing that mileage down to about 20 - 25 to fit in the other disciplines, though. I'm swimming 2X a week, but need to add a third day -- my weakest area. I spin once a week and am looking at bikes now, so hope to get one in a week or so (the only bike I have now has a baby seat on the bike, LOL) and get on the road once a week in addition to the spin class.

I'll start logging in my workouts now. I look forward to joining you guys!!

Weekend was really cold here in ND, Watched friend's kids play hockey 7 & 11 year olds. Parents got warned by ref for making unsportmanlike comments. Some of the parents are way to into the game. Wife & I were supposed to go to my Dad's for a Wii-Fest challenge but my dad ended up having to go to a funeral in Sturgis, SD so we watch Mr. Woodcock.

Swimming Discussion: The TI DVD has helped me a lot since December. I'm stuck on the fish drill mainly because I will have to have someone help me get in the correct position for the switching drills. The floating and kicking in a more streamlined position are making a big difference so far.

Ligaments then? Ice and "range of motion" exercises until it stops hurting. I suspect you' be fine with cycling, but possibly not swimming.


With all joint injuries, don't run through the pain.
