Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by ImSore#313- 2 miles (recovery day)Streak is still going strong, training plan, not so much. I backed down to the 55/70 Pfitz plan. I didn't have the time to put in the miles while traveling, and don't feel prepared for 80 mile weeks. The first week I got about 40 miles in, last week closer to 60. The first week it was very hot and humid, and I had a rough time adjusting to the 12 hour time difference, so my runs were sub-par. Then I traveled out in the country. Between early bus rides, and late arrivals to our hotels, it was tough finding time to get any quality training in. I couldn't really run before dawn or after dark due to no lights, poor road quality, and uncertainty of general safety in some areas.I did spend a significant amount of time in Shanghai at a private residence in a nice gated community. The only problem there was the dogs. Many people in the development used very large and scary dogs for security, many Rotweilers, German Shepards, Dobermans, and so on. And occasionally these dogs got loose. I had two encounters where I had to stop running and back away slowly for fear of being attacked. It did turn out that dog bites there were not uncommon and usually if someone got bit, they would just get paid off. Some people walked carrying large sticks which I presumed was for personal safety from the dogs, and there was also a "sword lady." By the end, I had one two mile loop that was relatively safe, but much of the time I pretty much ran around a single block (about 1/4 mile). It was interesting trying to figure out how to "officially" keep the streak going. First I wanted to keep with my local home time, which meant that I treated noon as midnight. However, That meant that I could run one afternoon, miss the next day, and run the following morning, and still be ok with the streak with my home time, so in order to not feel like I missed a day I sometimes ran twice so I wouldn't wake up and go to bed without running. So I kept the streak alive with my home time, and with the local time. Strong work and welcome back! #27, 4.7 |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() #314- 13.1 miles before the sun came up. I've only slept 8 hours total since Saturday, barely 2 hours last night, this time change just kills me. But I was able to be out the door running by 4 am today. And had a great run despite it all. My last 10 miles I averaged 7:09 min/mi, averaged 6:53 min/mi for the last 5 miles, mile 13 I ran a 6:24. I guess cutting my volume during my vacation worked as a pseudo taper. |

Nice mileage, how are you feeling with the increased miles? Two weeks away from the year mark as well. Suprisingly well. I even look forward to the long runs, althought the back-to-back long runs are a little tough. After all these 20+ mile runs, marathon training will seem easy. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Day 657, 10.1 miles with 12 strides in the heat and humidity. So much for those cooler fall temps I have had the last couple of days. I went over 2900 miles for the year with todays run. That make me tired typing that in, not really. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright, guys, need a little advice...It's 09-10-13. I'm looking at a HM on 10-20-13. That gives me 5.5 weeks or so. I've obviously been running every day for a while (yesterday was 43), but my mileage hasn't really been long at all. I haven't done anything more than a 6 miler in the past 3-4 weeks. Most of my runs have been 2-4 miles. I feel pretty confident that I could jump up to adding in a couple 6 milers per week immediately. Can I get myself ready for a HM in time? In looking at this, I think I would probably need to take my Sunday long run like this: Sunday, 09-15: 7 miles Sunday, 09-22: 9 miles Sunday, 09-29: 11 miles Sunday, 10-05: 6.2 miles (part of an Xterra triathlon) Sunday, 10-12: 10 miles Maybe I'd also need to build a mid week 6-7 miler in immediately? Or should I squeeze my distance runs in during the mid week instead of on Sunday so I can keep the distance up even through my Xterra triathlon? Or...should I just scrap the whole thing because it is too close? Any thoughts? |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't think its too close. I didn't go back and count, 2-4 mi x 7 is roughly 21 mpw. In many training plans, your long run is 25 to 35 % of your total distance for the week, which puts you at 7 miles for your long run, so to start it looks good. Also with increasing mileage, follow the 10% rule. Also listen to your body. If you need an extra recovery day, take it. If you feel guilty, you can do some cross training as long as it doesn't stress what needs rest. You have to make sure you vary your other days with a purpose, its not just about the long run. Fit in some pace specific workouts, for example, say you do work up to a mid week 6 mile run, do 4 miles at race pace. Then maybe one additional run as a "hard day", a tempo run that makes your legs burn a bit, keep the other days for recovery. I'd go for it. |

I agree with ImSore that you should go for it. even though you have not been running high milage you have been running everyday and have a nice base built for a half. The 10% rule is good and I agree with some speed work twice a week. For a half you really do not need to run a training run over 10 miles unless you recover well from your runs and it will not take away from a session later in the week. I would deifnalety do a tempo run per week and some 1/2 mile intervals another day. Remeber to keep your easy days easy, like a minute slower than your normal easy run. You will rock the half and I usally only do a two week taper for a half, well who am I kidding, lately I have doen zero tapering for a half marathon but two weeks for a half is a good taper time so your body is well rested. |

I think I will go out and run a few at this approximate pace tonight. And I might try to bike 9.11 miles as well. We run to forget. We run to remember. We run for those who can't. We run for those that were lost. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() #315- 2 slow miles. I would have run at 9:11 if I could have, I finished at about a 10:30 pace for the run. I am an idiot. I needed new shoes, badly. I have about 1k miles on the pair I have been wearing most often. So yesterday I decided to wear my Newtons since they had less wear (I haven't worn them in about 3 months), sort of forgetting that they require a "break in" period. Well, a race pace training run turned into a strained calf muscle. If not for the streak there is no way I would have run today. This injury is probably a good week of no running usually. In the face of every bit of conventional running wisdom, I will attempt to keep the streak going. That said, I live in NJ, and was within sight of lower Manhattan 12 years ago. I will never forget...3000 lives, a legacy of the families and friends affected, and also the early responders who stayed on site for days, weeks, and more, poisoning themselves, searching, to give some families closure and peace of mind. |

Just do 1 easy mile for a few days and it will keep your streak alive and I mean easier than your 10:30. Try and make it 11:30 while your calf gets better and if you have calf sleeves wear before during and after the run. I have them and find that when my calves are tight and sore that wearing them really helps me. The marathon I ran 2 weeks after the 100 miler I wore them for that race and was glad I did, mine were so sore those two weeks after the ultra but were fine after the marathon. |

I've been wearing a compression sleeve all day, and yesterday, and elevating it when home. I've also been taking ibuprofen. I could have done 1 mile for the "official" streak, but I've run no less than 2 for almost a whole year, and would like to make it. I'm stubborn, what can I say. I also fit this run in in a small gap between some pretty wicked thunderstorms. Only a bit of lightning on my run, but hey if I had to go somehow, it may as well be while running. |
