owl_girl - 2012-08-02 9:33 AM All of us woke up around 3AM.  Not sure why.  The dogs weren't barking and it was dead silent outside.  I couldn't get back to sleep for about an hour and a half!  I checked to see if there was an earthquake around that time.  The only one I found was in central Peru.  I doubt that one woke us up.  Very strange.  Now I'm exhausted.  I'll be skipping my last planned run before the Hill Climb on Saturday.

Tracy that sounds very strange did anybody else in your neighborhood have the same experience? Sorry you are having to skip your run because of it.

Not sure.  Still too early to ask around here.

3am is the hour most recognized for paranormal activity! Not that I believe in that kind of stuff, but thought I would throw it out there............Boooo.

Matt I was sort of thinking the same thing but did not want to say that or even mention anything like paranormal activity, UFO's and extraterrestrials but I admit those thoughts crossed my mind when I read Tracy's post. I probably watch that stuff way too much on TV.

You guys are hilarious!  We do live in a very old house which was moved about 75 feet, way-back-when, to its current location.  Hmmmmmm...... Surprised

Oh no!  They moved your house 75 feet!?!?!?  Do they realize that in the days when your house was built it was customary for the family to bury their dead exactly 75 feet behind the house???

You are living on a graveyard and they are MAD!

Here's a photo she sent me this morning.  She says the hand is the worst part despite appearances.

It sounds like a pretty intense moment for a dad and looks like a war wound for your daughter.  I am sure the adrenaline rush caused a few extra heart beats and therefore a few extra calories for both of you, so make sure you don't miss those calories before your next workout and eat a large bowl of ice cream to reload.

I'm happy to heat that she is able and willing to get back on the horse and ride with her dad again.

Jo63 - 2012-08-02 7:09 AM So question regarding the heat...I have NEVER had a problem with it so I was reading an article that Mark Allen had just sent and he mentioned salt tablets, do you guys use them? When, how often and brand? Also Iam looking for a good per and post drink suggestions anyone? So I call home last night from work and my husband tells me we have no power he was here and he heard some popping sound only to look out and see the neighbors big huge tree on fire and the line sparking needless to say I got home about 9 still no power and 2 guys are working in the dark gettin oour power on, it gave me more of an appreciation of the luxuries we take for granite. The power came on shortly after I got home so all is good I also want to say thanks for all the support from everyone, it is amazing to me how people I haven't even meet can make me feel so much better and stronger. After my parents died my family sort of fell apart so not too much encouragement from the siblings. Sorry to be so Emmo Iam thinking it is left overs from Monday lol Have a great day everyone!

As far as the salt tabs question, I am now training with a long course triathlon team and one of the members and I were talking about his very thing last weekend.  I am very new to long course racing so I can't really answer this for you with any kind of authority, so I will defer to Jeff's knowledge.  However I am doing research myself to prepare for my own HIM's coming up in (HOLY COW!!! I can't believe it's this soon) 4 weeks.  I will say that there are a lot of opinions out there regarding this question.  Make sure you do some of your own research and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE you race fueling strategy during all of your training.

Here is an article that may shed some light but I have not read much of it yet due to time constraints.

http://www.hammernutrition.com.au/info-centre/fueling-strategies-for-triathletes/part-2-pre-race-race-day/

Recovery drinks aren't needed for all of your workouts either.  As others have said chocolate milk is a great one but you can also use some protein supplements for some of the longest WO's you do, or when you have moderate distances with bricks involved.  I typically use protein mixed with milk after these same type of WO's while base building.  Once you have a firm base your body adapts and it requires less muscle rebuilding nutrients.

Power outages!!!!  Stinking power companies!!  Probably 1 guy working and 4 guys leaning on a shovel.  I know how those clowns work!!! Wink

I'll be offline for awhile.  This weekend is going to be the hottest weekend of the summer.  High temps for race day are expected to be around 95.  I'm lowering my expectations.  I think it will be around 80 degrees when I finish so I should be ok.  I'll check in with you next week!  Cheers!

I must tell you a terrible story.  Most of you have experienced that sense of horror where your heart falls in to your stomach.

I was mtn biking with my daughter last night and it was a pleasant 6 mile ride where we worked on some skills.  As we finished we rode down a steep gravel road to the parking area.  I had just told her to control her speed because the traction was poor when she suddenly came up to a deep ditch created by water run off.  It was about 1 foot across and maybe 8-9" deep.

She hit it hard and crashed.

I don't remember getting off my bike but I was standing there next to her practically before she stopped sliding.  Maybe I was teleported by Father-Magic.

The horror I felt was definitely greater than hers.  But she did have a short wave of extreme pain because her shin had landed on her pedal and taken quite a bang.  So after what seemed like forever (probably 30 seconds) her shaking stopped and she was Ok to get up.  I took her to the truck and lifted the hatch and sat her back there while I cleaned up her wounds.

Fortunately I always keep the following in the car:

  • first aid kit
  • baby wipes
  • black towel (stains are invisible)
  • water

So we were able to clean her up, apply disinfectant, apply bandages and just generally try to heal her spirit (which didn't need doing...I just needed to heal my own!)

After a while she wanted to go back to the crash and we pieced together what had happened.  She saw the gully at the last moment but committed to riding over it.  We looked at the gully and the marks in the gravel/sand there and this is what we decided...the gully was at a 45 degree angle to her direction of travel.  When the front tire hit the far side it didn't climb up and out, it slid sideways on the sand which pulled the front wheel of the bike out from under her.

Her biggest regret was that the crash wasn't 'cool' enough.  It's pretty mundane to say she crashed going down a road.  So we decided to describe it this way:  She was traveling down a steep hill at a high rate of speed and was jumping a gully when her front wheel washed out and threw her to the ground.

That sounds better than "crashed going down a road".

She has a great attitude toward mtn biking.  She was already prepared for crashes and even injury and realizes it's all a part of mtn biking.  She didn't regret going or give a second thought to whether she really wants to learn how.

Catching up on the Junkies. I've been distracted by the Olympics this week!

Jeff, I had a fall like this way back when. I was in my 20's so you know that was a LONG time ago. I got caught in a tractor rut on an old dirt farm path coming downhill. Same type of thing but I was by myself. I went over the front end of the bike, bike was totaled and I had to walk home bleeding. This was before cell phones - well we may have had one of those huge bag phones for the car.

I got back to the house and my husband took one look at me at gave me a high five for walking home. We went to get the bike and he said "Yep, that was a good one!"Ha ha

Anyway - it took a few days to show up but I did end up with some neck pain from that crash so tell your daughter to be on the look out. I hope it's nothing but scrapes and bruises and she heals quickly!

Jo - people kept telling me to take salt tabs when I trained for the HIM last spring. I did it just to shut them up (sorry to be blunt) but used few and far between. Honestly the sports drinks had me so overly full of sodium that I gained a little weight during my training. Just a very few pounds but I felt very bloated. During the taper I cut all of that stuff off and the weight disappeared quickly so by race day I felt normal again.

I also liked chocolate milk after a long workout but only when I had another workout on the schedule that day. I felt like it was really easy to over eat during that long course training.

And Tony - I have also fallen over on the trainer. It really is the strangest feeling but same thing - the skewer was not tightened down all the way.

I really should stop admitting to every bonehead clumsy thing I've done during training.....

Have I told you about the time I tried to learn how start on the bike with my shoe clipped in? See, I start with both feet unclipped, slide up onto the saddle, then begin to pedal while I'm clipping in my feet. This drives my training friend absolutely nuts. So I practiced in my basement one night. I thought if I fall there is the carpet to protect me. So I take off, fall straight over and narrowly miss hitting my head on the corner of my husbands brand new flat screen T.V.

That was the last time I tried that!

Jeff, I'm glad your daughter is ok.  It seems like she has a great spirit!

Tracy, sorry you had to miss your training run.  You'll have to let us know if you figure out what was going on.  It sounds like you may have needed Dirk in your neck of the wood to help with the power outage

Jo, definitely we're all here for you.  Anytime

Dina, your stories are all great.  However, I didn't realize that you weren't supposed to clip in as you are pedaling.  Does someone want to explain the correct technique to me?  That's embarassing!

I've been trying to keep my training on track, but I've also been making sure to spend lots of time with the kiddos this summer.  We've been going to the pool 3-4 times a week.  My daughter was so afraid at the beginning of the summer, but now she's gaining confidence and swimming by herself (with floaties).  I'm so proud   The baby loves the water and thinks it's great to put his face in.  Maybe he'll be a swimmer!

Most people start out with one foot clipped in, then push off a little and get up on their seat. Here is a youtube clip I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28IdOvbk7Us

I started off wrong from the beginning and now when I try to start this way I almost always fall so I'm just done with it! I have to have both feet free at every stop sign, and most turns or I start to feel a little trapped by the pedals. It's all mental (or maybe I'm mental ).

Glad your kids love the water so much! That is great!

Dina thanks for sharing your stories. I was hoping I wasn't the only that has had this happen. I'll admit when it was happening it wasn't very funny and I had the feeling of disbelief as I could not belief it was happening. Looking back at it now it is pretty comical and man I felt like such an idiot after it happened. I'm sure this won't be the last time I'll experience a training mishap.

Everyone here is killing me.  Falling on the trainer, houses on graveyards, etc.

Jeff, that was a nasty turn of events for your daughter.  Love how you characterized it though.  There's nothing like experiencing your children in an accident or in pain.  Thankfully it was only a flash wound.

Good luck to the racers this weekend.  Be smart in the heat.

I thought the same thing about all the stuff going on too.  I'm so happy I never make any mistakes and I'm perfect. It's not like I've ever swam the wrong direction in a race or anything.

I am getting ready to head out the door to go camping and racing for the weekend.  I have already done my long run (slightly abbreviated) and my long ride (right at my HIM distance) for the week and to morrow I'll probably get a 3 mile run in if I can swing it.  Other than that my race weekend is set...............4 weeks to my first 70.3.......I'm really itchy!!

Well getting back on a more serious note good luck to all the Junkies racing this weekend. I have my first sprint on Sunday and it is right in my neighborhood so this should be pretty awesome to do what I am calling a "home race". Plus plenty of incentive to try and do well. I'm like 15 minutes away from the beach where the race is starting. Everything went perfect in the first race excluding transitions but hopefully I can carry over some of that magic for this weekend race.

ok, if we're gonna go there - First tri story so you all can feel like you are experts and seasoned vets.

On the swim, I turned 45 degrees instead of 90 at the first buoy.  A kayak finally cut me off and the kid said "dude, the race is THAT way".  My son was on shore (swim was in the ocean) and said everyone was getting a kick out of watching me head toward France.  Then I started the bike with my swim goggles still on!  I even put my sunglasses on right over the goggles.

I'm getting antsy as well, and I'm feeling some pressure of my first ever tri relay event, 2 weeks out.  We have a crazy fast swimmer and a pretty quick runner, so I am the weak link but I want to represent us well at least.

Love this group and the crazy stories and wild experiences we've had opportunity to share. Jeff, hoping your daughter heals quickly.

My 4th tri this year is tomorrow morning. Another sprint distance. My wife will be racing too. Not worried about PRing this one. Just going to go and have a blast and if the numbers come up better than the last two that will just be bonus.

Everyone have a safe weekend, great races and those not racing I hope you all have fantastic workouts. Time to go recheck the transition bag, load up, and hit the road.

Good luck to everyone rAcing this weekend! May your race be fun and your path straight. As for me I may be forced into a weekend off from training. 1st I allowed myself to be signed up for a golf scramble on Saturday, so I'm going to go out and chase a little white ball around a cow pasture. Then I decided it would be a good weekend to tackle the garage roof. Figured I could get most of it done today, do a little work on it before the scramble on Saturday and finish it up after my scheduled ride on Sunday. Well this roof totally kicked my butt today and I only managed to finish 1/2 of what I wanted to get done. At 1 point I was so exhausted I took a break and fell asleep in the grass. Oh well, my race is still 3 weeks away! Let the anxiety begin!

Good Morning all! I woke up exactly at 4:00 EST without an alarm and turned on the women's triathlon on the Olympics. Cool stuff. Sure wish I could swim .9 miles in 16 minutes. I've been reading and laughing at your stories on our laptop because my computer is down. Hope your daughter is healing well, Jeff. Have fun at your golf match today, Matt and hope your roof project gets easier.

Tracy - I'm not sure which day this weekend is your birthday and hill run but hope you have a really happy birthday and a super race!

Vero - Having your wife race with you sounds so fun. You have a good, relaxed attitude going in this morning. Good luck to both of you.

Tony - Hope you're able to enjoy your second tri of the season. I think I was more nervous for my second one than the first but hopefully that won't be the case with you.

Dirk - I have a feeling your gonna kill this race. The straight canal swim should help if your goggles fog up again.

To any other Junkies racing - Good Luck - represent well!

Warren, I love the story of your first race.  I would love to see some pics of the goggles and sunglasses.  Of course everyone knows I couldn't swim a straight line in my last race but I also had another flaw in my first race too.  I had had a great swim, far better than I could ever have imagined, and a good run into transition.  My problem was I didn't turn my Garmin 305 on before the swim and set my watch up.  So, I promptly turned it on, waited for it to catch all the satellites, set up the fields I wanted and then, after about 3-4 minutes took off on the bike.  Kind of ridiculous now thinking about how I was so caught up in trying to make sure I got all my data right.

Matt, enjoy that roof project!  It's a great time of year to think about putting a roof on..........if your in Alaska.  As far as your training for "the Challenge" it's 4 weeks away and you have TONS of time to get all of your training up to par.  I am almost as ready as I can be for that race.  I am hoping to get another 3 weeks of rugged training completed and only take a 1 week taper because I have the Rev3 coming so soon after Springfield.

Vero,  I imagine you and your wife will do an incredible job representing our team.  Spending a race with your wife would be really awesome.  My race this weekend is the one I love to do with family.  the swim is on a canal that everyone can walk the entire course.  Laiken, my oldest daughter, coaches from the sidelines and I absolutely love that experience every year.  This year could be different however!   She was a t a friends lake cottage tubing and took a huge spill.  She has very large contusion on her left leg that has her struggling to walk and worse yet, we were at Walmart last night getting a couple of things we forgot to bring on our camping/racing trip and she almost passed out.  We had to have her lie down in the check out line so she didn't fall over.  She's alright and we may have to have her checked out if things continue but I am convinced it is a bone contusion.

Tracy, good luck this weekend at your hill run!  Hopefully the temps will hold lower than expected and you can get a solid PR.  It already sound like you  have a huge fitness for the this event.

Brenda, I am not going to be able to watch the triathlons until I catch up on all of the Olympics on the DVR at home.  It will probably take me a month to catch up because of all the stuff going on.  As far as how I do this weekend, I don't expect to place in my AG because this is a large race.  Last year I was 10th out of 63 and 49/505 overall.  I am just looking to better my placement and time.

I wanna race!!!!  they are calling for storms ending tomorrow morning at 8AM and my race is scheduled for start at 7:30AM.  I will be greatly disappointed if they turn this into a duathlon.  I also may have people coming from my extended family to watch me race but that isn't completely decided yet.

Other than that my race weekend is set...............4 weeks to my first 70.3.......I'm really itchy!!

ok, if we're gonna go there - First tri story so you all can feel like you are experts and seasoned vets.

Warren this a great story. So now I know some of your secrets to improving my transition times, leave the goggles on and just put the sunglasses over them! I just about fell out of my seat when I read that I was laughing so hard.

Dirk good luck with your race this weekend and have a great time with your family. I am sorry to hear about what happened to your daughter though. I hope she is feeling better.

Matt good luck with the roof and be careful with that project.

Vero good luck to you and your wife in your race this week. That is very cool that you are both racing together and I can't imagine a better way to be supporting and enjoying each other's company during the race then to be out there together.

So I may be in the same situation as Dirk as they are calling for possible rain and thundershowers. I am more worried now about the wind as it is supposed to be windy. I hope the bay does not get rough for the swim thankfully it is only 500m's. Today will be a day off for me I will pick up my packet and I want to take my bike to the LBS this morning. My front tire looked like it has a slight wobble when I spin it. I just want to get that checked out and taken care of before tomorrow.

Dirk and Tracy - good luck in your races this weekend! And Dirk I hope your daughter's leg is okay, that sounds like a nasty injury.I'm pretty much set for my race - I drove the bike course today and it is hilly as all get out, with a couple of technical descents on nasty surfaces. Im going to make sure my brakes and tires are in good shape! I'm number 333 - I feel like that should stand for something right?!John
