All the energy wasted going anaerobic for tenths of seconds in a swim meet is definitely not worth it in tris.HCS5QA - 2007-11-09 11:23 AM sparco - 2007-11-09 11:11 AM TriAya - 2007-11-09 1:08 PM D001 - 2007-11-09 10:30 AM sparco - 2007-11-09 1:27 PM x2...I 're-learned' swimming using Total Immersion http://www.totalimmersion.net/ I must be doing the TI stuff wrong.... Everyone seems to love it. I try it, and all that happens is I mess up my shoulder. Maybe I need to get the DVD.....
I'm not a FAST swimmer, but I can now swim the Oly distance without a whole lot of glycogen depletion, shooting for the half iron distance next season...I just try to stay relaxed and efficient, trying to emphasize the glide. I do one flutter kick per stroke... Hey, where's spokes...(kidding Scott...)... Probably time to do one of the clinics--or did you ever get a coach to work with you on form? Whew!!! I'm glad the REAL swimmers finally showed up...oh, hi Yanti! How the heck do you swim those 1:30s...I've been working on that for 3 years now... Ok, all you swimmers need to compile all these notes , set them in a PDF file and forward them to all us newbies. LOL SIR YES SIR! I have a competitive swimming background ... but even now, I spend part of every workout working on form, and try to consciously keep it in mind at all times. Although, in OWS, my background in water polo and martial arts has been much more useful ... I think it's really important for everyone, athlete or no, who wants to swim to work on good form. It's such a fabulous exercise, and no one should get injured doing it. As for triathletes ... in terms of getting faster (provided your form really is as good as it can possibly get, which takes quite some time), there's a LOT of work involved for a very few seconds gained ... maybe an unpopular view, but I'd just get the swim workouts in more as maintenance, and practice transitions A LOT! Ok I havent got through the whole discussion yet but Im going to add my .02... Generally triathletes spend too little of their time swimming... why? Well 1 - you need to be able to swim as efficiently as possible in order to ensure that you do NOT use up any (well much) energy on the swim so you get out of the water fresh... if you dont swim often your body wont remember how to move effectively and efficiently through the water 2 - swimming is low impact and great for building your cardio system and also is great for recovery work with all the riding and running. It is a great chance to build your cardio capacity and threshold without the pounding from running or even riding 3 - Swimming is a skill that relies on technique rather than brute strength... and like with anything else if you do not practice it regularly your body when it tires will always fall back on its bad habits. Yes... the swim is only a small proportion of your race and of course you arent going to train it 7 times a week BUT more people do significantly under train a discipline considering it sets up your whole race AND can be used to build cardio fitness without the impact of the other disciplines... ok... you can ignore me now Oh and on the kick... its really useful when finishing the swim leg to kick your legs faster as it prepares them to stand up and run into transition.... otherwise there is no blood in them... not a good way to exit the water Edited by kaqphin 2007-11-09 10:20 PM |

More so then i ever thought it would be, so thanks for the additional info. OK.... As someone who doesn't stretch at all.... Why stretch? Does it help with post workout soreness? (That's the only thing I can think of. So maybe I've never worked out hard enough to need to do this. LOL)
Stretching: When you work out and muscles get put under stress one of their reactions is to tigthen... after awhile they dont loosen up as much and stay tight.... This will pull body parts out of alignment and cause injuries.... because other muscles will start to compensate for the tight muscles and it will affect how you move. Also if muscles are held in a certain position (ie high heels) over time they will tighten to fit the position they are used to... Stretching keeps the muscles supple and your body in good alignement (among other things) and Im sure someone who understands all this better than me will explain it beter |
