hi there i am such a beginner its not even funny!! running is fine. just did a 21km the other day even though it was verrrry slow!! swimming is ok but also very begining stages of about 1.2km. no cycling what so ever. fell in the bushes the first time with my cleets on it was spectacular!

My question is this. Is it possiible to train for a half iron man in 3 months based on the fact that i have no cycling base and very little swimming? i see the beginner plan is 20 weeks. Maybe i am too ambitious at this stage?

Welcome! Yes, 3 months is too soon! Pretty much any plan you find will be 20 weeks long and that's assuming you are not a beginner and can start off with 45-60 minute runs and bikes. Look at the first week of training on the plan and ask yourself if you can do that safely, all workouts, and not risk injury. The answer should be NO. I hope there is another race you can train for instead of jumping into the half distance! Take your time and learn to love all the race distances that triathlon has to offer.

edbrennan73 - 2011-10-27 7:24 AM It would be good to get some advice on what to expect etc and how you guys started planning and testing you hydration and nutrition.

Your long runs and rides every week are where you should be testing nutrition. Aim for 200-400 calories an hour and adjust from there based on how you feel.

Subject: First Half IronMan coming up!

I just moved to Singapore from New Jersey and am ready to sign up for the Aviva IronMan 70.3 Singapore. I did a sprint triathlon and the NY marathon 3 years ago. I haven't maintained my cycling or swimming and I only half-assed my running since then. But for the last month I have been running for real. Luckily the building I'm living in has a pool, so I just need a suit. Now I am looking for a good road bike that I can use while I'm here. I just downloaded the half ironman training sheets and can't wait to find a bike! I found a good posting site (Togoparts) and am hoping to get a newer bike with 105 components (so I can resell easily before I move back home) that fits.

Glad to be in good company!

Good luck, everyone.

Paul

Hi! I have done a couple sprints and i think i am going to try the Rev3 cedar point half in sept since it is in my hometown! I wil not start the whole plan until april, but am looking at using the first few weeks as my winter training plan (with some yoga thrown in and possibly with a little more run focus as i hope to do. 1/2 marathon in may).A quick question about rearranging days. I need to have tuesday as my rest day due to work conflicts. The first week, for example, has saturday as a rest day. I would like to make tues the rest day then shift everything up a day (so tues is wed, wed is thurs, etc - which means i would go straight from friday's workout to sunday's workout without a rest day in between). Would that be effective or is it better to leave it in the order written?

Hello everyone! I know the "season" is over, but mine got derailed this summer.  Just getting back to the gym after 3 months off. I completed a half IM last year (Branson), but wanted to keel over when I crossed the finish line! I am starting the half IM program to get back into shape and be ready for next year.  My goal is to finish a half IM and have the energy to make it to the post race party instead of crashing by 7 pm!  Good luck to you all!

Hello everybody,

I am going for my first HIM in April 2012 in Marbella, Spain so still time for prep. according to the 20 weeks schedule.

I did olympic distance this year and I am used to a more maintenance style training, this means I am pretty slow in all disciplines. Anyway, my problem is that most of my training will be in winter so I'd like to hear about your experience with race prep during the cold and wet season. doing all the sessions outdoors including swimming.

Thanks for any advice and motivation, cheers Andreas

Hello!!!!!
I think I must be crazy, but I'm signing up for the Muskoka half Ironman
I'm 70lbs overweight, and although i have cycled long distances (200kn/2 days) and swam and run (significantly shorter distances) I still feel crazy for setting this as a goal
Crazy but excited....
My boyfriend is highly motivated to train and help me get to my goal, and he is fit and knowledgable enough to be an asset (assuming it doesnt kill our relationship for his nagging) but the key things for me to overcome are a life long battle with being overweight and an ocasional propensity for socail smoking and drinking... obviously all three of these things will need to be taken care of if I am to complete this even.
My main goal for the coming months is getting not race ready, but training ready and this mean reallly focusing on long distance running and weight loss.
Hope I can find some support here!
Thanks for taking the time to hear me out

Bravo!  Take it easy and work at your own pace.  I lost over 50 lbs by consistent exercise after my last pregnancy back in the day.  I never looked back, having maintained a healthy weight since.  May I suggest a good nutrition plan like Weight Watchers...it truly works if you work it along with your daily training.  Good luck and most of all, have fun!

Registered for Racine 70.3 .  Done a few sprint races and using this as a motivator to take a step up in my training/fitness.  Background in competitive swimming, so now I need to work on leg endurance

Greetings, Going for my 1st 1/2IM this year.

History:  Nearly a yesr ago, got off the couch and completed a 12 week beginner program for Olympic distance. Lost 20# in the process and got close to the best shape in my life.  That Spring/Summer completed 4 Olys in about 3 hrs ea.  and avoided any injuries (except for a little ITB) and basically learned the ropes a bit.

After taking the fall mostly off, about to bump it up a notch and start preparing for my first HIM on June 9th in Boise, ID.  Aiming for 6 hrs.  The long run will I think be the hardest for me.  Never ran more than 7.

I'd like to start a little sooner, but it looks like most HIM programs are 20 weeks ?

mcfly: The book Triathlon Training for Dummies has a HIM training plan that starts at 24 wks, have yet to see any longer.  That said, I would just start building your base and gradually start getting comfortable with increasing miles and go into the 20 wk plan strong and healthy. Perhaps take the time to get in strength training and yoga - I did not have time for anything outside the plan when followed it for my 1st HIM.

Hello fellow triathletes,

I have previously finished (3) 70.3's  and in 2009 I finished IMFL in 16:16. Ok, I'm slow but I finished. Then in 2010 I attempted to complete IMAZ and had to quit at mile 8 because I realized there was no way I could make the cut off time. It's taken me a good year to where I feel like training again.  I've set my sights on the 70.3 in Orlando Florida, May 20th.  I am pretty much starting off from zero. I am now just getting back into the routine of 2-a-day workouts.

For those of you who have never done a long course triathlon...it takes work, commitment and huge desire because it's just not as easy as it may look.  However, once completed, there is no way to describe the feeling.  I'll look forward to your posts and support.  Thanks ahead of time...

I'm relatively new to the blog thing.  I have completed two HIMs, but they have both been slow.  I want to complete my next HIM under six hours.  I told myself I could train for a full IM once I meet that goal.  My race is in Lawrence, Kansas on June 10.

Wow!  I'm glad to sere this thread is still going so strong.  I started training for my first HIM last year using this plan.  Having no endurance racing experience I decided to jump in head first.  I signed up for a Duathlon, Sprint, 2 Olys, a HIM, and a marathon.  I was doing great in my training and was excited to race.  It was a no go.  Got deployed to Japan for months to help with the Earthquake/Tsunami relief.  I made it back just after all my races except the marathon.  I was able to knock out the marathon in under 4 hours after 2 months of hard training.

So on to the next year!  Signed up for the Mooseman 70.3 in June and the Muncie 70.3 in July.  I decided to use this plan again since it seemed to fit into my work and social schedule well.  I learned alot last year while training (mostly through beginner blunders) so hopefully I'll be able to help answer questions.  Good luck everyone!

Quick question: I'm starting up training for next year and was originally looking at just keeping it to olympic distance.  I have a few under my belt but this last year was off again/on again at best.  I'm still ok for the olympic distance though I've slowed a bit.  Anyway as I got to looking at teh plans I noticed teh time requirements for the HIM training plan arent' that much different than the ones for the Olympic distance so I was going to bump it up.  Problem is that the HIM in my area comes at week 16 of the 20 week plan.  I'm assuming that I should be fine to do the training and go ahead and do the HIM at week 16 and just know up front that I may be a little disappointed with the times, but should still be able to comfortably finish it?  Am I thinking right on this or is there something REALLY important in those last 4 weeks that I can't live without?

Is it going to make creating a HIM impossible by cutting off the last 4 weeks...probably not.  If you're looking to cut 4 weeks off of the plan I wouldn't cut just the first 4 or the last 4 since the Prep period gets you're body ready for the weeks of training to come and the Build and Peak period get you ready for the race with some bricks.  Rather take a week off of different periods.  For example, take a week from the Prep period and each of the Base periods.  It will be difficult to decide which ones to cut since each week has a specific purpose so I would look carefully at the plan and see where you might be able to trim it to meet your time restrictions while also not cutting out your limiters (swim form, bike power, etc.)

Thank you.  That was very helpful.  I know I can cut the most from my swim.  It's not that I'm that fast or good, it's just that I have my strongest base there and can get back up to speed the quickest with it.  The swim is my favorite, so I've been the most dedicated to it.  I can cut a little bit from my bike and nothing from my run.  so that should work out close anyway.

Yeah, as long as you already have a good base of fitness you should be alright.  Just ensure not to push harder than you would if you were training in 20 weeks.  If you get injured then the training will get cut even shorter.
