I've been putting in some good running miles lately so I got some new shoes as my old ones are getting close to 400 miles. Picked up some Zoot Ultra Kane's. Definitely the most comfortable shoe I've ever put on. Can't wait to run with them!!

Sick shoes Brian - let us know how they work for you.

I've been itching to get some flashy shoes...I'm currently in love with most of the Newtons, from a pure aesthetic angle. They just look so damn fun.

For now, I'm forced to strap on my trusty yet boring Asics.

I don't have orthodics, but I noticed a bit of slop too when I tried them on. Nothing I can't live with on the road. I got my eye on some Salamon trail shoes as well for the trails. Btw.... the slop in the Kanes went away when I tried them on sockless. I'll run in them tonight and report back.

I also, finally, went and got my road bike fit. Swapped out a stem and got some new cables put on. I pick it up tomorrow or saturday.

Good to hear, too much cush is the devil!  I used to run in Salomon trail shoes also.  Good craftsmanship, love their lacing system.  They were a bit heavy, but other than that, grip was awesome and they are a very stable shoe.  I tried the S Lab2 XT Wings recently, but my fackin orthotics ruined that too.  I finally settled on some Mizunos after my wife raved so much about hers.  Take the plunge, you won't be sorry.

No official results yet but I think my chip time was ~1:39:10! Clock time was ~1:39:30 and I started in the second corral. I was really pumped coming around that last corner, seeing the clock, knowing I had set a new PR AND gone sub-1:40 with room to spare. Great race, as usual.

I just realized I never congratulated you on your awesome race!  Job well done!

So I've decided to follow Endurance Nation's out-season theory and go with 'shorter/harder' after my last race next weekend.  I'm going to use Jorge's winter cycling plan since I finally got the green light from the boss (the wife) to get a Powertap.  Other than using a generic runners world plan, anybody have any experience w/ 'speed' type plans that they have good things to say about?

Thanks boss!

I'm jealous of your imminent PT purchase. I'm guessing you saw DC Rainmaker's latest post about how to get a Joule head unit through 'Team Kovi'?

I didn't, I skimmed his interbike post, and saw mention of some 'coming soon' PT reviews, but that's it.  I'll go back and look a little more thoroughly.  I have a Garmin 500, which I think will do everything I need AFA power data/analysis, but I'm not positive.  I was bummed he didn't get to race Vegas, I was hopin to get a pic w/ him in transition before the race!

EDIT: Just checked, the Team Kovi post wasn't up last time I was on there, looks like a sweet program!

I love these shoes. There's a bit different stress with the stability on my knees I need to get used to but not a huge deal. 6.15 miles tonight on the break in till the hot spots started kicking in. My last set of mizuno's only went 3 miles before hot spots. Super comfy!!

Jay, I'm jealous of the pt for sure. I've still got powermeter on hold since I can't seem to keep my wallet closed with all the other stuff I've purchased lately! Lol

Jeez, I wish I could pull the trigger on the PT.  I'm envious; I've wanted one for so long now.

I think you will find that using the trainer is much more accurate with power than HR. Unfortunately, I will be using HR for another season.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to get it, I don't think my HR is an accurate reflection of the effort I put in on the bike.  Hopefully I hear back from Wheelbuilder soon, so I can put in an order.

Rich at Wheelbuilder is great.  He has built me a couple of sets of MTB wheels in the past.

If you are waiting for a reply from email or internet inquiry, I suggest calling them.  They answer the phones and will walk you through designing a wheel to meet your needs.

I'm glued to my computer right now. Potts is an absolute beast in the water. You can tell how powerful he is by the way his back is out of the water, hips right at the surface.

Not sure he'll be able to hold on to the lead for long though - everyone seems like they are really hammering the bike early, even that old man Macca.

Wow!  What a race!  That was probably one of the best IMs I've watch.  Good day for the Aussies.

I feel sorry for Lieto, but same ole story.  He fell apart on the run again.  Damn, he and his coach kept saying how much he had improved on his running.  I was pulling for the local boy.

Lucky bastards, all I got was the written updates today.  The live feed wouldnt play on my phone while we were out shopping.

So wheelbuilder is going to give us a 15% discount.  Do I go with:

A) Wheelbuilder's HED Pro+ PT package  ~$1000

or

B) Group buy Pro+ PT on unknown DT Swiss rim.  Not sure who/when built. ~$900

I want the HED rim, but that's just cause I'm a HED fanboi.  Is it worth the extra $100?  Also, Tim, what's your opinion on the # of spokes available for a rear wheel?  Is less better?  I have 24 on my front, I'm guessing I should just get the same?

IMO, I would probably go with the HED wheel.  DT makes awesome stuff.  I have DT hoops and hubs on my MTB.  Hubs, with ceramics, are silky smooth.

As for spokes, it's my understanding that the number of spokes is influenced by the weight of the rider if laced in a traditional pattern.  I believe a popular combination is 18 in the front and 20 in the rear.  Since I'm on the lighter side of the scale, I've never paid much attention here.

Talk to the guys at Wheelbuilder.  They will give you the pros and cons to each scenario.

Well.....

It looks like I'm getting a new mtb. I was burning through some single track today and the bike felt like I had a flat. Looked down, no flat. Came up to a tight turn and couldnt get it around. Went right ovr the bars. When I got to the double track I stopped and wiggled some stuff found the rear swingarm was cracked. The frame was flexing big side to side. Bike is sitting at the trek dealer now. They are talking to trek to see what they'll do.

I was at first, but here's my issue with that:
1. My plan was to keep this bike as a cushy trail rig for long trail rides and build a race bike over the winter- 29er hard tail
2. In accordance to the above and the fact that everything seems to be moving in the 29er direction I don't want to spend any more $$$ on this bike
3. I have high end wheels and ceramic pad v-brakes on the trek. All new frames will be disc specific. Meaning I need to spend $900 to get comparable wheels and disc brakes to work with the new frame.
4. I'm not sure I'm crazy about anything in the trek line that they would replace my frame with right now. So I'll be spending more money on a bike I don't even like that much!
5. I need to be riding my mtb right now, not waiting for a new frame and/or working on a new build.

On a side note. I ran sockless in the Zoots Sunday. I think those shoes are better sockless than with socks. 4 miles, no problems!

Trek won't cover the bike because I'm not the original owner.

That's even better! Now you can just sell the parts off that one and use the $ toward the 29er. Your homeowners insurance might cover the bike. May be worth looking into.
