Dina,  It sounds like your new road bike is a great bike for you.  Now about that wind, I think it sucks all the time!!  Cold and warm temps in the wind makes for a frustrating ride until.............you turn around and it at your back for a nice push home.  Then it's the best thing in the world!

I usually don't spend much time in TT here anymore.  Trying to keep up with everyone here, my training (or lack of right now), and family and house stuff I don't have the time.  However, I did look at the "decline of BT" first page or so and saw your post there.  I kind of agree with your assessment that there are so many opinions that a person could easily get confused or simply become frustrated with all the things people say when asking advice.  One other reason I seldom post in TT;  I usually read a thread after 2-3 people have already suggested my thoughts on a given subject and rather than belabor the point I just don't post at all.

Tony,  I saw you made up a lot of time on your MTB course.  Great riding!  Obviously the fitness you've gained on the road had carried over to the trails but more importantly you're learning the off road skills quickly.  I keep telling myself.....Someday! Someday!

Karl,  Your experience at IMFL sounds like it was pretty awesome!  Are you ready to do one yourself?  C'mon!  Tell the truth!  I had several teammates race there this weekend.  One of them is in the 50-54 AG and crushed a nearly 2 hour PR and came across the finishing line at 10:28.  That's astounding!  I'm just hoping (and maybe beyond hope) that I can cross in about 11:30-12:00.

A quick update on me (Matt, I'm not going to get a chance to read your post this AM); I have run now, twice.  The first time wasn't very good!  I was obviously not running correctly and my form was horrendous!  I had a pretty significant limp from the new pain associated with the sartorious muscle's insertion into my tibia.  It is believed right now that I may have some scar tissue from my ACL reconstruction that has become inflammed.  That has been getting better but it can still be painful.  My second run, last night, was much better!  The first 100 yards or so I was off kilter some but my form was much closer.  The 2nd of 3 intervals felt really good!  I had virtually no limp and no pain but my focus was much stronger on my form and my pace was a little quicker making me run a little more efficiently.  I am still pretty frustrated but it's coming along.  I'll get there!...........And now I'll probably be late to work.

I was able to look at this at work this morning from a fellow runner here at my company.  It's pretty much spot on for the thoughts you have while running a marathon.

Dirk that's great news on the knee and you getting a good pain free run in. Hopefully that will continue to the be the case for you. Also if you ever get the opportunity to get a MTN bike you have to do it! lol. Not only is it a lot of fun but it is a great work out and a nice change up from the S/B/R.

Matt thanks for the long post and it was great to hear that you were able to get around the city and cheer Austin on yesterday. I was thinking about you guys yesterday and was hoping you were both do well. Congrats to Austin for finishing and to you for taking the trip out here, supporting and cheering him on. You get big time kudos like Dirk for being out there and doing your own marathon to support Austin. I really enjoyed reading your post. I hope you guys had a great time while you were here and I really apologize for not getting there to see you both. I really would have liked to have down that. I also hope the shady sections of the city (there are quite a few lol) didn't turn you guys off to NYC. It really is a great place with a lot of diversity and a lot of stuff to see and do. Again I hope you guys had a great trip and hope you both have a safe trip home.

I'm off from work today and I'm gonna hit the trails again this afternoon. I'm pretty sore from yesterday so I may not do better than what I did yesterday but I definitely want to get out there and get another ride in. It's pretty cold today as well, I guess the party may be over as far as the weather goes.

Matt - That was quite an adventure you had just trying to get from place to place.

Dirk - It's good to hear that things are moving forward with your healing. Keep being patient, I know it's tough, but we all want to be following your progress for Ironman next year and it wont happen if you do too much too soon.

That Marathon video was funny. I think I hit a few of those stages even on my HM earlier this year.

Tony - How was the mountainbike ride yesterday? I have an old Specialized that I haven't spent much time on. I should get out there and hit the trails a bit too.

Will - That Toyota is pretty slick. Not so sure about that shower surrounded by windows though, Yikes!

I've been feeling very sore in and around my shins the last few days. There is this constant dull ache from below the knee to the ankle on both legs. I worried about it a bit yesterday and considered skipping the run but I went out anyway just for a short run and it was no problem. I really didn't feel the ache at all during the run, but afterwards the ache was back. I'm not sure what is going on there, but I plan on running again today and we'll see how it does.

Will thanks for posting. I don't think I'll be getting one of those anytime soon but I think some of those ideas make sense. I'm not so sure about the shower and washer machine /dryer though lol but the grooved roof for the bike is a good idea.

Vero I hope that's nothing serious with soreness you've been experiencing in your lower legs. Hopefully it's nothing more than the normal soreness or aches and pains that you feel from time to time from running. And yes you should get out on the MTN bike and hit the trails if you can do that once in a while.

I did get out for a ride yesterday and I had fun but to be honest I almost didn't go. I was so sore and tired from Sunday's ride I wasn't sure I'd have much legs to ride on. However I did fine and I did take it at a bit of a slower pace so I didn't beat my time on Sunday but my 1:43 was respectable. I actually probably did more like a 1:40 because I did an extra .34 mile as I went left instead of right on the trail and had to backtrack. It's a 3 mile stick and a 9 mile loop so I went the wrong way lol. I rode well in some streches and I think I did better on my climbs. I thought I handled the bike better yesterday then I did on Sunday so I'm making progress and I really do enjoy it.

One scary moment though I just missed crashing into a tree. I think I was coming out of a bend and I was going a little too fast and hit the brakes to slow it down and went sideways a bit. I stopped like right before the tree so I was very lucky. I just rode off like I meant to do it lol but we all know that was not the case. I think it'll be a while before I can handle the bike well so I'm trying to be as careful as I can but not ride scared. It's sort of a fine line in doing that but I guess I'll continue to get better the more I ride the trail. I'm hoping to ride again this weekend and hoping to get two rides in. One day a week just isn't enough.

Alright, our activity level has been a bit low lately. Here's a question to get some discussion stirred up... and maybe give me ideas:

Since Christmas is right around the corner, what Tri stuff is on your wish list?

This smells like shin splints.

Have you changed the surface your running on to something a little hard?  Like going from trails to all road running?  What kind of mileage are on your current shoes?

Generally shin splints will ease up while you're running but become inflamed following your run.  I suggest you try to continue your current planned runs, maybe back the distance off slightly, and ice after the run for 15-20 minutes and ice a couple of other times during the day if you can.  Also try to keep the muscles warm in the front of the leg by doing some ankle circles that cause you to feel a hard stretch in all of the muscles surrounding the lower leg.  This can be done whenever you think of it, like siting at your desk at work or watching TV.

A pool watch is the #1 thing on my list. I also need some new cycling shoes. Mine smell horrible and the velcro comes loose during my rides all the time. I really don't want to fuss with new shoes honestly because I like these and knowing my feet I will get something new and my feet will get all fired up!

Will for me it's a power meter for the bike, new wheels for the bike and the Endurance Nation training plans. Those training plans aren't cheap. I think the power meter and wheels I'll be getting in March when my bonus comes. I'll probably get the EN IM training plan at the end of this month. I am waiting to see if they do a black friday sale like they did last year. That will be my birthday/christmas present. I think all the money I invested this year was really my gift. I'm surprised my wife didn't kick me out of the house with all the money I spent for the IM adventure.

Speaking of training totals how'd everybody do for October? Mine were respectable but honestly I feel like a total slacker right now. I have not been motivated at all. The only thing I'm really excited about is the MTN biking which I can only do on the weekend. I have no desire to swim but have been going once or twice a week as I know I need to. The indoor biking on the trainer I don't mind and have been doing that but I can't get excited about running on the treadmill which I have been pretty much doing. It's that or start running in the dark and I'm just not a big fan of doing that. Anyway here's my Oct. totals.

Swim: 4h 39m 09s - 10455 M
Bike: 18h 01m 14s - 241.61 Mi
Run: 8h 15m 23s - 48.62 Mi

If I were to put my wish list up on this site it would require an entirely new server to back up all the new data but I'll toss a few out there.......

  1. New trainer (and sell my old one).  Preferably a KK but I would suffer through not having the power associated accessories for the higher end model.
  2. Race wheels.  I don't need Zipps but a lower end set of deep carbon wheels like Reynolds, etc.
  3. A paid for membership to the Human Motor Works cycling sessions at the cycling center in the store.  They are coached sessions by the local pro and include power assessments from cyclometers for each bike during every session.

I can on and on but those are some big ticket items I would be happy with.  To be honest, I get so much benefit from Lis being so good to me about my racing and associated things that I hate to ask for much.  To be further honest I usually don't even tell her how bad most of my gear is at times.  I am still wearing my HMW kit that was torn up in my bike crash because I don't want to spend that extra money.  I also have 2 other cycling shorts that the chamois is pulling away from the seat...........

.......But I really want a lot of stuff.  I usually ask for money for Christmas and birthdays so I can buy my own stuff.

Alright, why not update you all on my condition?  I've got a couple of minutes.....

I have been able to get a couple of more runs in this week.  I would like to have gotten a couple of more in but the storm work over the weekend wouldn't allow me the spare time.  The second run since being told to keep running wasn't all that good.  I had some knee pain associated with the run and I had a very noticeable limp.  My PT suggested I keep running through the pain and limp but have a very determined focus to get my mind and body to straighten and correct my form.  I believe I mentioned this run in a previous post.

The third run was far, far better.  My knee felt like a million bucks yesterday and I was anxiously waiting to run last night after I rode my bike.  I got off the bike after an hour of torture and had a substantially better run.  I seemed only to have adverse effects for the third interval and it was minor at worst.  I am hoping I am making the turn toward being able to get back to myself.  It will be a while before I'm running 25-30 MPW again but I can live with that as long as I'm healthy for a spring IM kickoff.

The run surface is the same. Almost entirely asphalt. I run mostly on the road and occasionally on a paved multi use trail. I was rotating 3 pairs of shoes. The mileage on them is 72, 160, and 271. I just retired the pair with 271 earlier last month, but I had been using them during my switch to running 4 to 5 days a week.

Maybe it's just the increased frequency? I'll try icing and stretching them as you suggested.

I actually went back through your logs and thought the same thing about frequency but your runs would have been averaging less than 3 miles per run, so I didn't think the short distances would have been that much of an issue.  I would try the icing for a while and see where it leads before changing much.  However, if the feeling gets worse drop the frequency down and continue to ice until the pain subsides.

I battled shin splits for a while, and it definitely helps. Also, after every run, I added this short protocol and I really think it has helped. I read about it at my ortho guy, gave it shot, and I think it has really helped.

Walk on your heels, pointing your toes as high as possible, 50-60 steps feet straight, 50-60 with feet pointing out, 50-60 with feet pointed in. It takes about 2 minutes and it seems to have really helped me.

Some people say do it before runs as well as a short warmup, which I haven't tried.

Dina, so glad the road bike is working out. And Tony, sounds like the mtb is a lot of fun. Dirk, it's awesome to hear your knee is co-operating. Keep after it slowly. IMWI is a long way off and you have plenty of time,

Matt, hammer it this weekend. One thing to keep in mind is that almost every top performance in a HM or shorter is negative or at least even split. Go out under control and bring it home.

For a Christmas list, I usually do an Amazon wish list, and then people can pick from that. Or I ask for very specific stuff with links to the item to order. Not sexy, but when you're old like me it's all about function!

But my lifetime tri budget is probably nearly used up from purchases this year. In fairness, I did get a bonus to fund most of it, and a friend at a bike shop got me crazy deals on most of this stuff, but this year I got a TT bike, ZIPP wheels, power meter, aero helmet, tri biking shoes, a Hurricane wetsuit, new race kit, and two cycling bibs. Yikes. Could have sent one of the kids to college this year! And yes, my wife is a saint for somehow putting up with me.

You all may need to talk some sense into me. You know I've been trying to have this long, slow plan to build my running mileage. But I just heard from my friend Laura the marathoner that she is signed up for her first ultra trail race which is the Huff 50k which I also believe Brenda may be planning on also? Now obviously I can't manage a 50k but there is also a 3 man relay or just do one loop for 10 miles. Would it be a really bad idea for me to try to get ready for the 10 mile part of this event? The run is December 28th so that is a little over a month. My longest runs have been 5 or 6 miles. I would not be opposed to a planned run/walk, just not sure what intervals to try.

You won't hurt my feelings if you tell me this is a really bad idea for me and to forget about it.

To be honest, I wouldn't suggest you do this. To go from 5-6 to 10 miles in 5 weeks sounds like a lot for you to increase right now. Staying healthy should be the top priority and trying to get ready for a 10 mile run by that date seems like the risk of a setback would be very high.

If you really really want to try it, run/walk sounds like a solid plan. If you decide to go for it, post back and we should get a plan figured out among the group.

Dina I would have to agree with Warren. I think staying healthy while running should be your number one priority. However I do think you could do this and the run/walk plan is may be the best way for you to do that without risking a set back.

NOOOO!!!!!  You can't do that race!!!!!  That is around the corner from my house and I won't be here to meet you!!!!  That is our week in Ohio for Christmas with the families.  I forbid you do a race this close to me when I won't be here!

In all seriousness, I have done the relay and the course is very challenging with plenty of hills.  I loved the course myself and the race a great one.  The year I did it was the EPIC flood year, and we were up to knee deep in water the week before Christmas, with snow on the ground and temps hovering slightly above freezing during the race.  Brenda did the race that year too.

As far as you doing the race.  I think you can do it as long as you keep it in perspective and don't try to set any PR paces.  Your weekly mileage will be the indicator if you'll be ready for a 10 mile loop.  In my opinion, I think you only need to get your longest run up to 7-8 miles to be in a really good position to have a good day.

In short, despite me not being able to be in the area while your in town, do the race!  Huff is one of the most epic races for ultra marathoning.......And here's why That was the year I did the relay.

Just sent you a PM DINA and I'm glad to see DIRK chimed in.  The video he linked is the one I mentioned and it's just crazy.   If the conditions are like that again you definitely can do it because everyone had no choice but to do some walking.      You know I'd love to see you there!

VERO - thanks for asking about my son.  He's a senior in high school and is planning on going to Indiana University so that school is just too big and he's not that talented of a football player so he won't play there.   His team did get creamed 42-7 last Friday so it's over.      Hoping your pain from running is subsiding.

WILL - my Christmas list only includes some new running shoes.  You'd laugh if you saw how many pairs I currently have but the arthritis and bunion on my large right toe (which has increasingly been causing me pain) has me needing shoes in the wide size.

WARREN - yes, your wife is a gem to have allowed you all that stuff.   I didn't realize you really hit the jackpot in new gear this year.  Yay you!

Originally posted by wbayek For a Christmas list, I usually do an Amazon wish list, and then people can pick from that.

Holy cow Warren, you need to hook me up with your friend! I'd say you are set for a long long time! I keep looking at wheels in the classifieds and I had a guy make me an offer but I just can't seem to rationalize that purchase for myself. I'm too cheap!

I'm like Dirk, I use up my stuff until it is so worn and gross that my husband is begging me to buy new already . Except running shoes, I'm always on the hunt for running shoes. I finally figured out that pain in the top & side of my foot I had a few weeks ago was from the Brooks PureFlow shoes I was trying out. Sheesh, I ordered a pair of Altra this time, low drop, neutral with cushion  - fingers crossed. At least I can send these back if they don't work.
