Age Group Rank = 24/26
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00am and had two bowls of Cheerios and headed to the race. Should have gotten to the race earlier. Bike placement was to far from swim exit.
Event warmup:

No warmup. Won't happen again. I think it really hurt the swim.
Swim
  • 15m 45s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crazy swim. Broke out too quick and did not pace well. Had a fellow racer grab and hold my ankle to pass. Through me off. Took awhile to recover.
What would you do differently?:

Train more for the swim. I did not spend the time in the pool I needed. I need to put together a specific swim plan to effect positive change.
Transition 1
  • 05m 19s
Comments:

I know this was pathetic. I had to run from pool to bike across the parking lot. My bike was at one of the furthest points from the pool exit. I ran across a few pebbles and I was just not use to running barefoot. I had to sit down to put bike shoes on. I got a little OCD and kept going over everthing before I left on the bike. I was afraid I was going to leave something I needed.
What would you do differently?:

I WOULD HAVE PRACTICED T1! I really thought it would be easier than it was. I'm going take time on a weekly basis to practice T1.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 19s
  • 21 miles
  • 20.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a good bike ride. I hit it pretty hard. I passed 7 TT bikes on the course. That actually made the race for me.
What would you do differently?:

I would have hit it even harder. I'm strogest on the bike. I could have gotten more out of it to make up for lousy transitions.
Transition 2
  • 04m 43s
Comments:

Again, took way too much time. I needed to remember this was a RACE!
What would you do differently?:

Again, practice transitions. I had not completed any bricks leading up to the race. That was a mistake.
Run
  • 56m 13s
  • 4.4 miles
  • 12m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Developed a side stitch right out of the shoot. Stopped and walked several times in the first 1.5 miles. I finally stopped and stretch. That did not really help. Finally I stuck my thumb in the middle of the stitch and I ran the rest of the race with my thumb stuck in my side.
What would you do differently?:

Again, this was a RACE. I needed to push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Kept on my feet and walked for several minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Side stitch and not ever having a Tri experience before.

Way to go Phil!  You'll get faster at transitions.  After enough times through, they become second nature.  (Or so I'm told.  I'm still working on my T1....)

I'm telling ya Phil, we've got to outsource those transitions!  That is one flying bike, man... and your run and swim will be better next time.  You're on your way to Kona!   Duly noted that it was a long Sprint (at least by Virginia standards), so that was an especially challenging 1st Tri.  Congrats Phil!!
