Does anyone belong to the CCC?  Are they triathlete-friendly?

They are extremely friendly to all types of cyclists.  However, they're definitely more a recreational club...if you're looking for a group to train with, you might want to check out XXX Racing.  XXX does a Saturday AM ride that's open to the public.

XXX is a more serious group for sure but I would never recommend to anyone that they show up with tribars on their bike.

I've seen lots of tri bikes on the XXX rides. They won't let you ride in aero for safety reasons, but otherwise there's no problem.

Just to clarify. I never said there are no tribikes at sat AM XXX rides. I meant to say I would never recommend anyone ride with aero bars. I apologize for not being clear enough.

I'm XXX this year. I don't plan on doing city rides. There are a group of us that will ride out of Naperville and I'll be doing their MTB rides at Palos. The few of us out of Naperville are very friendly and usually ride with others from Lifetime fitness.

I am interested in these rides you mention out of Naperville.  I currently reside in Naperville and am looking for a cycling group to join this year.  Can you please provide me with some more information on this.  What is the usual route for you guys?  Also, what is the average speed/distance you guys ride?  I appreciate it.

There are 2 routes starting at Commissioners Park. One route is 35 the other is 50. We usually do 35 on Saturday and 50 on Sunday. It's a combo of 2 clubs out there, XXX and Lifetime Fitness. AVG's vary depending on who comes out. If there are newb's from LTF we can be 17-18. If it's just some of the serious guys it can be 20+. It's a no drop reguardless, so if a group breaks off and goes faster we wait at certain points on the route for the rest.

If you belong to LTF just come on out! It's really their rides. Some of us joined XXX this year. You can always weigh your team options later.

True. I don't belong to LTF though, belong to Esplanade Fitness Center in Downers Grove.  I do a lot of cycling though and looking to take it to the "next level" by doing more group rides with more serious cyclists.  I was looking at possibly doing the Thursday races at the Velodrome but it's going to be a problem with my work hours unless I can pull some strings, plus I'm more about finding a group of guys I can do some long rides with at a pretty steady pace.  Also as a relatively young rider(25 yrs old), I find it hard to find groups who are either: close to my age, not a pro/elite, can ride 20+ for 100+ miles. This XXX group looks pretty neat, something I would have never know about if it was not posted here.

Question: Are you guys currently riding now?  I was looking at the XXX website and there is a group ride planed on Saturday in Chicago which I am considering attending.  How are the street where you guys ride in the city?

Yep. I have not been riding outside and haven't gone to any of their city rides yet. I just signed up with them myself. But I see they are riding now.

Anyone ride with xxx in the city yet? I'm concerned about falling behind on the ride back and I'm curious to know what they average.

On the way back the pace opens up quite a bit.  In the summer months there are probably enough riders to ensure that you can find a small return group riding in the high teens. The lead group probably pushes mid-20s (with bursts above that).

I haven't ridden with them in a while, so I have no idea what the group size is like during spring rides.  I'd suspect it's significantly smaller than summer rides and is most likely dominated by more serious riders.  Bring a map or plug the route into your GPS if you're worried that you'll be heading back solo. But I could be wrong...

If you live in the city (especially on the N side) I highly rec'd doing this ride at least once...riding in a large group is a lot of fun and it's nice to be able to get a good weekend ride in right from your front door.

Rode with XXX over the weekend.  I think we started out with 20 and the group grew to 30+ after the 2nd stop - nearly everyone there wore their club jersey and there were very few newbs in attendance.  I kept up with the group for the most part, but fell back in the hills section near Highland Park.  I was told they rode unusually hard on the front leg, pushing 20-21MPH average once we reached clear roads Evanston onward (18MPH average in the city + lots of stops).  Once we reached HP, nearly all of the riders went further to do hill training and a small group of cyclists (including myself) went back to the city.  That was a much slower ride, probably 16MPH against a very strong headwind.  Overall, it was a good experience and I'll definitely be back.

Tri Smart does group rides. I rode with them last year and will ride with them this year. They should be starting soon. They start at urban tri in burr ridge on Wed, at least thats what they did last year. There are normally 3 groups, fast med and slow. I think about 25 miles on Wed night. They also have alot of smaller rides where a group will go out. They are a great group and very friendly. I highly recommend them. They have quite a few newbies and quite a few IM's.
