I know religion is a personal thing. There are things about my faith that are not logical, I just beleive them. But from the outside looking in I have never understood the confession thing. Why do you have to tell some guy what you did wrong? Why cant you just pray about it directly to God?
You can actually do what ever you want. It is not a sin to not go to confession. It's a sacrament, sort of like a special benefit. It is difficult to talk about your failings to another person (in the early years of the church they did it in front of the whole congregation ), it's easy to talk directly to God, especially when it's on your terms. Personally, I believe that anyone who is truly sorry and asks for forgiveness, will be forgiven. I heard a priest tell this tale once about Satan having a conversation about an individual: "When he was sinning, I helped him out by taking away his shame. Now that he's in confession, I gave it back to him."
When you confess your sins directly to God, what does he say to you?
(Full disclosure: I'm overdue for a confession, so after reading this thread I'm going this Saturday ) Edited by vonschnapps 2012-02-02 7:35 PM
