By most accounts this is not usually an issue unless there is a jerk around. Most people will extend respect to each other up front. But an old jerk is still a jerk undeserving of respect regardless of age. Someone doesn't get to be a jerk just because they are old. Dead, old, same thing. They are who they are/were. Age and alive or dead are irrelevant. I think that is the fundamental disagreement. I have to agree that is the fundamental disagreement but aside from this "alleged monstrous" mistake he may have made, 99% of the portrayals of Joe Paterno in the media over the past 45 years have been EXTREMELY positive...both ON THE FIELD AND OFF nowhere near an old jerk... you can't give him the respect that he's earned over that time for just a day or two?? If not, that's what's sad... |

If not, that's what's sad... Death obviously changes something for you. For me it does not. I extend the same respect to someone the day before, of, or after they die. (I am not insinuating that you do not) My opinion of JoePa is not as bad as it probably came across. I think there are many redeeming aspects to his life. However I felt like both sides had justification for their posts. Not just the good. Hence why I spoke out. I didn't enter into the conversation 3 months ago and I wouldn't have this time except for the compassion for the dead comment. If that's sad to you, that's fine. I respect your opinion. |

I would think it became poor form centuries, maybe even milleniums ago??? I was taught it by my father and he by his father and so on and so on...
Ah, I see the problem. I was taught that respect is earned, and pretending respect to someone who does not deserve it is dishonest, something that a person does who cannot think and judge for themselves.
This does not mean that I go to a funeral and badmouth the dead. On the other hand, I also don't stand in the street and do it when s/he is alive. I just ignore the person, unless it is something like a discussion or forum where the specific topic is being discussed. In this case (forum, right? ) from the little I know, he did a lot of good, that is overshadowed by a major screw-up. so 'respect your elders" really means just the ones that have earned your respect? you have to admit that there are certain situations that just demand your respect... the dead and your elders are just two...
Unless said elders have done something that makes them lose this automatic respect. In that case, no respect whatsoever. Nothing "demands" my respect. It is given, as a rule, to everyone, not just dead or elders. But it is not set in concrete, and can be lost if the other person really screws up.
As happened in this case. |

Doing the absolute minimum and not going to the police regarding the rape of a ten year old child?
No, I cannot. And I find it sad that you can.
I don't feel the urge to vilify him, but to demand respect for a person whose behavior would earn anyone else term "subhuman" is more then I agree with. If this was joe schmow from down the block, would you still be demanding "respect"? Edited by r1237h 2012-01-24 4:06 PM |

JoePa already admitted that he didn't do what he should have when he found out. He didn't do enough to stop it...and I truly believe that makes JoePa a bad person. I said it 3 months ago, I will say it today. Respect is earned, not a right, and JoePa lost all my respect when the scandal came about...that wont EVER change. I don't think that he's a hero...at all. Did he do good things? Yes. But all those went out the window when I found out that he and the rest of the Penn State administration continued to let these little boys be raped.... |

There is nothing that I can do to actually stop the hunger epidemic in Africa. I don't have the millions upon millions of dollars to do so.
JoePa had the power to STOP these boys from getting molested, and yet, in my eyes, he didn't do anything. He continued to let it get swept under the rug. |
