Subject: Good Athlete new to Tri... but in Iraq.. HELP!

Hello! I am ElizaBeth Sparks from MO. I am a good athlete, having played several sports very competitively over the years and gave up scholarships to get into the Army. Like I said, I am in the Army and almost every time I max-out and go above on our PT test(Physical fitness test that includes running, push-ups, and sit-ups). I love to run, bike, and swim, with work needed on swimming mechanics, but I have never competitively done the 3 sports at one time. I work out consistently, but recently wanted to turn my workouts into training. I have been trying to read and soak up as much information on the Tri-sport as I can. However, as always, there is so much out there I tend to get a little lost on what level I think I should start at and where to go from there to make my training efficient.

So that is where I need some help. My other issue is that I am currently in Iraq serving as Military Police. I will be here until the end of Feb. We are lucky enough to be on a small base with a gym, but not anywhere outside to run or bike and definitely nowhere to swim. I make the time for working out, getting up at 430am everyday but my off day, before breakfast and mission time. I do a mix of running and biking, as well as weights throughout the week.

A few things about me that might be useful to help me:
I am 25, 5'10, 160lbs. My normal sitting heart rate is usually around 44, sometimes lower. I seem to be well toned with low body fat. I enjoy eating healthy, and don't drink soda. I can't think of anything else right now. My mom sent my Garmin Forerunner 305 last week after I decided I had time to go to the gym.

PLEASE, if there is anyone out there that would be willing to take some time out to help me I would GREATLY appreciate it!

Thank you,
ElizaBeth

Hi ElizaBeth (my sister's name too!) -Welcome to BT! You'll find tons of helpful peeps here and there are loads of plans right here to choose from for training. You sound like you're in excellent condition - 44 or lower hr?! Wow! I wish I had the sense to get in better shape at your age. Ask any questions you'd like or search the forums too.

And by the way, THANK YOU! I know life can't be easy in Iraq but know that you've got peeps back here supporting you guys/gals.

Thank you for replying to my message. I haven't been able to get on lately because our internet here is very random. I was wondering if you could explain a few things to me and give some advice. I looked through several of the training plans based on where I thought my abilities stand, how much time I have a week, and how much I have already been doing. I really liked the 20 week HIM program. But I was wondering if, since I will be here until end of Feb, if I should start with the olympic 2x or 3x, or even the olympic/HIM crossover, since I won't be able to do any kind of races until march or april. Or can I start one of the later programs until it sort of fits to the beginning of the HIM, and then start the HIM?

Another question, obviously I don't have a pool. So how do you recommend me do training for that? I have been doing some workouts that target the major muscles for swimming, but is that helpful or effecient until I get home and can swim?

I am sorry if these questions make me seem completely ignorant on the subject. I guess I actually am to a point, but not to overall training. I just don't want to do something that I think is right, just to find out later that it was very ineffecient and didn't help me get to my goals.

I appreciate your time greatly,

ElizaBeth

You can do weight training to increase your lats for swimming as well as your triceps. Overall cardio endurance is great for swimming too. Maybe until you begin to ramp up for a 1/2, do the Oly/or less to stay in shape so as not to burn out.

You may want to post in triathlon chat too for more insight from those who've done long distances and/or have been unable to train in a pool etc..

I know how you feel.  I am also from Missouri, stationed in Germany, but currently serving in Iraq.  I have basically tailored my training to the duathlon, but added some weight training to strengthen the upper body for starting my swim training when I get back.  I just started so we'll so how it works out once I do get back to a pool.  Good luck with you're training.  You're past the halfway mark till you get home.  Stay safe.

Hey... I know this is pretty delayed, but we got really busy, AND I lost my password. Anyway, I wanted to ask you what MP unit you are in. I am in the 1137th, but over here with the 1175th(with some 1138th and 1139th mixed in as well.)

I was with the 2d Stryker Cavalry Regiment.  We are back in Germany since the end of October though.  How is the training coming along?

Hi, I have been back in the states for a month now! I have recovered from ankle and hip-flexor injuries and have been able to start actual training again. It is going well, actually. I appreciate you asking. I ran a half-marathon the second week back, a 5k last weekend, and a 5k the Saturday. I have an Xterra the following weekend in Memphis, TN and 3 other races this month. I was able to get a tri bike and MTB after a week being home. I have been on leave, so I have had plenty of time to train... and I am loving it!  Now, if this rain would go away, or at least not be so random. haha
