Subject: Training for the swim (A beginner)

Hi!  I haven't swam more than the lenght of a pool in over 10 years.  It's far easier for me to take one breath and swim the lenght.  If I tried a breath on the way, I was done.  Just didn't seem like I was getting the air that I needed.  Now, I was trained as a lifeguard, so I can crawl and swim with my head out of the water, but I am guessing that won't lend itself to a good swim time.  So, I am going to start training as a beginner and was wondering if "The Essential Triathlon Swimming DVD" from Kevin Koskella was a good place to start?  Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ken

Thanks!  I saw that earlier, but wanted to get some information on technique.

Ask and ye shall receive: the Total Immersion (TI) method has taken me from gasping after 25 yds. to finishing half mile open water swims with no problem.

x-a-million on TI.  25 yards killed me starting out.  But, thanks to TI, I just swam around 900 yards in September at a tri...and I'm a complete newbie swimmer!

I'm pretty sure Kevin is a member of BT and has written some articles on swimming for this site.

If you can, find somewhere to do some lessons (individual or group).  Better to learn good stroke mechanics before you build bad habits.

I don't know a thing about Kevin's DVD, but he does write articles for this site that I have found useful.  As a beginner, I know your struggles.  For me, a DVD wasn't enough (I used TI).  I found a swim coach who was good at working with beginners to IM.  With him, I am slowly moving out of the tadpole category.

Good luck!
