Budu Racing
60F / 16C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 40m 18s
Overall Rank = 53/90
Age Group = F 30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/7
Pre-race routine:

I made every mistake in the book. We got no sleep, ate no dinner last night, and got into the scariest motel in the world at midnight. That combination really helped with the chest cold I have been fighting, and I woke up basically unable to breathe.

We had a bunch of water, part of a bagel and a banana, and some Starbucks, and drove over to the race.
Event warmup:

On I-90, there were two dogs in the middle of traffic. I got out of my car and ran the dogs -- corralled them -- down to the exit and waited for police to come save them. That got my heart pumping.
Swim
  • 15m 30s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since I was scared about breathing and have never practiced OWS, this was interesting. Bascially, I have been a competitive swimmer my whole life, and know that I can swim that distance...I thought I don't need no stinking practice. WRONG! I don't know exactly what happened, but I found myself right outside the first buoy and just became overcome with panic. I could not swim a proper freestyle to save my life...I have no idea what exactly occurred...I almost quit because the suit was so tight on my neck I thought I was suffocating. So, I turned over and swam an 800 backstroke. Not the smartest move, but I finished the swim in around 16 minutes...
What would you do differently?:

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. I want to get comfortable in the open water, to maximize my swimming ability. Maybe I can knock a bunch of time off if I swim freestyle instead of stinkin backstroke.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

I didn't anticipate being so disoriented after the swim, so I was moving in slow motion in T-1.
Bike
  • 50m 33s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.24 mile/hr
Comments:

I try so hard, but I stink at biking. I only got passed by a few people on the way out, but in the last two-three minutes, it was like I was stopped, and half of my age group flew past!
What would you do differently?:

Ride my bike faster...that's all! I definitely need to hydrate more.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

I don't know my exact time because they combined T2 with the run.
Run
  • 29m 41s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like no brick I have ever done. I don't know what the problem was. Um, the lack of sleep and sickness caught up with me here, as I had to walk most of the first mile. I didn't get any sort of rhythym until mile three, and I ran my slowest five 5k in a race! Poop.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate more, and do more and more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around for about ten minutes. Ate a mini bagel and peanut butter.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep, nerves, lack of training, swim panic.

Have to show some support for a fellow NW triathlete...Your swimming was still fast compared to an adult learner and you will gain there quickly I am sure (after a year I am still hit or miss on decent open water swims, I am often happy with the fact that I did not drown). You were not happy with your run, but it was solid especially putting in the fact that you are not as stong of a rider as you wish to be.

For every thing that sat in your way you had a nice race and I would be proud if I were you, still a solid MOP finish despite being in a fairly strong age group.

Congrats on your race!!!

Nice job Rachel! You did great! I tried looking for you on the way back in but everyone seems to look the same on bikes.
