Subject: Protein Sources
Im trying to get about 25-30% of my DV calories from protein. I looove meat so this really isn't an issue but does anyone know if one protein is better than another? Right now the majority of my protein comes from turkey, chicken, egg beaters and occasionally some beef jerky. Im in college so I dont have the ability to whip myself up a smoothie whenever I feel like it. Any suggestions or does anyone recommend a certain type of protein powder?

cottage cheese is a good source, the whey protein in the powders are more economical in the big containers -- but maybe a friend or a good store will let you sample some smaller sizes for taste. I personally like the taste of the whey products better than the soy protiens --- but that's a personal thing.

I often each cottage cheese and yogurt (low fat, low sugar) as a mid day snack.

tuna in water is probably the best source of protein you can get.

I use nitro-tech protein powder. I don't know if it is all that much better than regualr whey like it states. I noticed no difference over intaking the same amount of whey protein. So in retrospect I may switch to a cheaper whey when this canister is up.

same here.

3 shakes w/ oats, 3 meals. and a FF fudge pop at the end if i've been good!

I really like Myoplex. I workout before and after work, so I lug around 4 or 5 meals at a time. The myoplex orginal has ~ 290 cals, 3g fat, 23g Carbs, 42g Protein, 3g fiber Toss in 1/4 cup of oats (75 cal, 1g fat, 24g carb, 2g pro, 2g fiber) and you've got a mean PWO meal or meal replacement.

What is also nice about them is they come in singe serve packs. I toss in 3 packs, a shaker, and a 1.5 cups of oats with 2 meals out of the freezer. that's the chow for the day.

Being in college, prepared food will help fuel the body and keep good stuff on hand.

I am a fan of the GNC whey powder as well, and have been using it and switching up the flavors for some time now. Once I bought a can of a different brand thet GNC sold for a while and it was AWFUL. Stick to the real thing!

I suggest sticking to the real thing if at all possible.  Real food is better digested and absorbed than shakes and is significantly cheaper.  Meats, dairy, beans, nuts, and yes even the beloved peanut butter are all great souces of protein.

If you absolutely can't get the required protein with food (1.2-1.4g/kg Body weight) then stick to either whey or soy protein powders they have the most complete amino acid profile.  Our bodies are made to get protein as food not individual amino acids.  Whey and soy are both packaged as complete proteins.
